the All Weather Package (awp) includes hi/lo heated front seats, defrosting outside mirrors, and front wiper deicers. Its standard on the 2.0i Limited and Sport models and optional on 2.0i Premium. Heres a photo of the wiper deicer working. The lower part of the windshield has a heating element under the glass to warm and defrost the area where the wipers sit. It unsticks the front wipers. Made by Fuji (Subaru) in Ota, Japan. Introduced in 1993, the Impreza has consistently been top rated. Over the years is has been available in 2, 4 and 5 door models, with all wheel drive or front wheel drive. Engines offered have been a 1.8L, 2.2L, and 2.0L, after 2002 only the 2.5L until the new 2.0L with CVT transmission was introduced in the 2012 models.

2.4.12 2012 Impreza brochure error
The 2012 Impreza brochure 'Trim Level' page (page 16),  incorrectly indicates the rear cargo tray is standard on Sport and Sport Limited but it is an option, List price for the tray is $71.

2.1.12 February is the official introduction month for the 2012 Impreza. Expect to see more advertising. The current supply of the 5 door with the CVT  is very low, and what is available sells sell quickly. Many people are ordering, especially Sport models.

11.27.11  master cylinder issue on 2012 Legacy, Outback, and Impreza.
Last week Subaru announced a delay shipping Outbacks, Legacys and Imprezas. On the 25th, they confirmed rumors that its due to a brake master cylinder issue, and dealers cannot sell or deliver affected vehicles until they are repaired.  That means cars expected to arrive in November or early December may be pushed back.  This does not involve Forester, WRX/STI or Tribeca. This is safety recall campaign code WVY-35. Subaru is acting quickly- parts are already being shipped and arriving at dealers, and letters will be sent to owners.
In an emergency, the Impreza still has a manual parking/emergency brake, the Legacy/Outback's electric parking brake will function as an emergency brake if gently tapped but be careful.
'SoA received a limited number of reports of intermittent excessive brake pedal travel in 2012 Impreza models built through November 15 as well as 2012 Legacy and Outback models built between October 27 and November 23. While braking capability in these vehicles is maintained, drivers have reported their concerns about greater than normal brake pedal travel"
11.18.11 Subaru has announced a shipping delay involving Outback, Legacy and Imprezas, so already announced ETAs will be late.
11.16.11 The very first 2012 Impreza arrives.  While most dealers aren't getting any until maybe late November at the earliest but more realistically mid December, and reportedly some customers who pre-ordered are getting antsy because they aren't even getting delivery dates, there is hope because at least one new Impreza has been delivered. It arrived last week and was sold November 9th at Cascade Subaru in Wenatchee, Wa.
"Last week, Cascade Subaru Autocenter in Wenatchee received the very first 2012 Subaru Impreza - yep, the first one in the nation - and sold it straight-away to a happy driver from Peshastin.
“This is a first for our dealership and really an honor,” said Glen Carlson, Cascade’s marketing manager. “All the stars had to align for us to be honored in this fashion - it’s the first of thousands and thousands that will be sold in the coming year.”
Carlson said those lined-up stars included Cascade’s sparkling record for customer service, the dealership’s high market penetration (number of Subarus per capita) and the fact that “we found the right car for the right customer - it’s what’s she was looking for.”
On Nov. 9, Julie --  of Peshastin got the keys to her new 2012 Impreza 2.0i Premium, the five-door, 36-mpg model with all wheel drive and a very tasteful dark gray paint job.
“I came to buy a car, and this is so much more than I expected,” said Julie about the hubbub surrounding the sale — speeches from Subaru reps, the car wrapped with a cover and bow. “I’m amazed that the (Subaru people) put this all together, and we’re the first to get an Impreza. I’m overwhelmed.” read the article

8/12 2012 updates- ORDERS ACCEPTED  accepted for Impreza, Outback, Legacy.  Colors have been announced and orders are now accepted for 2012 Impreza, Legacy, Outback. Legacy and Tribeca orders should be open soon. No prices announced yet. Imprezas still expected late November, subject to change.

7/28 Three model lines from one? Will the XV concept become a separate model line like the WRX/STI? It seems Subaru might be planning to create 3 model lines from the current Impreza. There will be the Impreza, the WRX/STI, and possibly the XV small SUV..
7/18 Colors-  updated 7.22.  Rumored that new colors reportedly include Deep Cherry Pearl and Ice Silver Metallic. Three 2 tone combinations reportedly will be available- Sky Blue or Sage green with the new Ice Silver accent, and Obsidian Black with dark gray accent (available previously). Other colors continue from 2011.

7/12 The Impreza XV concept crossover SUV will be sold in NZ in 2012. No word (yet) on which US auto show will host its debut...  will it be the LA Auto Show November 16, 2011,  Detroit's N. American Int. Auto Show January 9, 2012, or the NY Auto Show April 5, 2012?
"The appearance of Subaru's new XV crossover in trials on roads in Northland this year is the first stage of an ambitious plan by parent Fuji Heavy Industries to boost global sales over the next five years.
The production version of the XV is understood to be earmarked for road tests here in December, in readiness for its launch on both sides of the Tasman in March/April next year.
6/30 Initially the all new redesigned 2012 Imprezas  were expected in late summer but that has now been pushed back to late fall with production set to begin in October and delivery in late November/December. The official introduction is now set for February though again, the cars are expected in late November-December 2011.
6/7 more on the  Impreza XV crossover - Subaru is showing it around, its going to be at the Australian car show this July 1-10, and it could be built in China if Subaru teams up with Chery.

Whats New on the 2012 Impreza?

everything... its all new

The new Impreza 4 door and 5 door was shown to the public for the first time at the NY Auto Show, April 20th.
It is still made in Japan.
Its expected at dealers starting in late November though it could be earlier. It was originally going to be available late August but the March earthquake changed that.
Available as a 4 door sedan or a 5 door hatchback,  the models are 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, 2.0i Limited, and the 5 doors are also available as 2.0i Sport Premium and 2.0i Sport Limited.
All models continue to have full time All Wheel Drive with stability and traction control

Completely redesigned,  the new Impreza rides on a 0.9" longer wheelbase (104.1" vs 103.2"), and has about 30% more interior room which is where it really counts. Bigger inside but not outside is very good.
The windshield is more angled ('A' pillar moved 7.9" forward),  and the front doors are 5" larger.
Visibility improved and seating positions are higher...  the top of the doors is now 2.4" lower than previous models, the front seats are raised .67",  the rear seat raised .79", and the new dashboard is flatter. The result is that you sit higher which is both more comfortable and allows greater visibility.  The front door sill stepover has been lowered by 0.8".  Rear seat legroom is almost 2" more.. This car should be easy to get in and out of.
With a new 148hp 2.0L 4 cylinder boxer engine matched with a CVT automatic,  fuel economy is EPA rated at 27/36mpg - a nice jump over previous models - especially for highway driving - and at the top end of All-Wheel-Drive offerings. The Impreza CVT is a revised smaller and quieter version than used on the 10/11 Legacy/Outback and will have paddle shifters on 2.0i Premium and 2.0i Limited models but not on the 2.0i models.
As for manuals shifters, a 5 speed manual (not a 6 speed), will be offered, EPA rated at a respectable and also much improved 25/34.
With safety in mind, the new models get a driver's knee airbag - a first for Subaru - and a revised  drivers front airbag that spreads thin and wide first which is good for drivers that sit close to the steering wheel. Plus all steering wheels will now telescope as well as tilt, so taller drivers will really like that.  And outside mirrors are 23% larger.
And a new electric power steering system draws less power from the engine than a belt driven power steering pump.  The only other Subaru that used an electric power steering was the wedge-shaped  XT6 in the 1980s.
The larger interior, better seating position, larger doors and the other new features and safety upgrades of the 2012 Imprezas will be appreciated.
But its the high MPG that is sure to please current Subaru owners who have waited, sometimes not so patiently, for Subaru to lead the way with an efficient all wheel drive. And the 2012 Impreza is designed to draw new buyers in for a first look at a Subaru. Subaru's goal is to increase sales  in the warmer, drier regions where all wheel drive isn't important and sales have always been low.
27/36 MPG is not hybrid or diesel fuel economy range but its a big improvement over the current models. The 148hp is down from 175hp in previous years but bigger engines don't get the fuel economy.

New- Fuel economy. The new 2.0L CVT is the top rated non-hybrid All Wheel Drive rated at 27/36mpg. The manual is rated at 25/34mpg.

Models- 4door sedan and 5 door wagon 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, 2.0i Limited. 5 door wagon 2.0i Sport Premium and Sport Limited (Outback Sport replacements).
Note- the XV Crosstrek model (a 5 door with 8.3" ground clearance)  is expected in the US fall 2012. It will be available in other countries earlier.

New PZEV emissions is now required in CA, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, OR, PA, VT, WA Imprezas previously didn't have PZEV
New engine - 2.0L DOHC with 148hp, 145lb-ft torque, engine code FB20 (replaces the previous 2.5L with 170hp, 170lb-ft torque).
New transmission- CVT (continuously variable transmission). This gearless automatic transmission is a new CVT chain drive. Its the 2nd generation Lineartronic CVT and revised to be lighter weight , smoother and quieter than the 2010/11 Legacy/Outback CVT. It replaces a 4 speed automatic Sportshift used, with updates, since 1990.  With improved and lighter components, the 2012 weighs in 110 pounds lighter than the 2011 models, so even with only 148hp (down from 170hp), at least one car website is quoting 0-60MPH at 9.8seconds and 0.3 seconds faster than the 11 (autoblog.com)

New EDR, Event Data Recoder (aka 'black box') information. For years Subarus (and other cars) have had some 'memory' though there have been few details about what it remembers, for how long, where its stored or how to access it. Data probably involves accident or airbag deployment and related speed, gas or brake pedal position, occupant position, if seatbelt were fastened etc.
Starting with the 2012 Impreza owner's manual, Subaru has released details on the EDR. It doesn't mention previous versions or what is new with the 2012 Impreza.
'The main purpose of the EDR is to record, in certain crash or near crash conditions such as airbag deployment or hitting a road obstacle, data that will assist in understanding how a vehicle's sytems performed. The EDR is designed to record data related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems for a short period of time, typically 30 seconds or less. The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record such data as how various sytems were operating, if seatbelts were buckled, vehicle speed, and if or how far gas or brake pedals were pressed.
EDR data are recorded only if a non-trivial crash situation occurs, no date is recorded under normal driving conditions and no personal data (name, age, gender, crash location) are recorded...  To read data, special equipment is required. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer (Subaru), other parties such as law enforcement that have the equipment can read the information if they have access to the vehicle or EDR.  Existing laws generally provide that information in an EDR is confidential and is the property of the owner of the motor vehicle.'
Information is accessed through the airbag system using a Subaru service computer.
With the total integration of computer systems in every facet of the modern vehicle, there is going to be an increasing amount of stored memory. This is industry-wide and not Subaru specific. Personal tracking devices with memory have been available for years, for theft prevention purposes and also so parents can monitor children's driving location, speed and duration for example. No doubt insurance companies are aware this information exists.

. Note- see image below, lower red circle.  There is a discrepancy regarding the spark plug interval in the 2012 maintenance schedule supplied in the owners manual. The schedule calls for replacing Impreza 2.5L non-turbo spark plugs at 30mos/30,000 miles and all other models at 60mos/60,000 miles.  Since there is no 2012 2.5L non turbo Impreza anymore, its not clear if the '2.5L' is a typo and the new 2.0L Impreza spark plugs should be replaced at 30mos/30,000 miles, or at 60mos/60,000 miles with the other engines. This schedule is from the booklet with print date 10/11 on the back cover. - New Car break in period- 1,000 miles- keep RPMs mostly under 4000 (manual transmissions), vary speeds with a normal mix of city and highway driving, avoid hard starts/stops, let the engine idle briefly before driving. Be nice to it... it's new. Oil- 0w-20 synthetic oil is required (5.3 qts) Spark plug-  NGK SILZKAR7B11 1st oil change required at 7,500 miles or 7 mos. 3mo/3000 miles is generally recommended.  Oil change: at least every 7,500 miles or 7.5 months  using 0w-20 synthetic oil Tire rotation 7,500 miles or 7.5 months. Equal tread is required on all tires 15,000 miles - minor service, replace cabin air filter. Inspect fluids and engine air filter as necessary. 30,000 miles: Replace brake fluid and engine air filter. Inspect and replace other fluids, belts, hoses, spark plug wires as needed. Engine coolant replacement interval is 11 years. 60,000 miles  - Replace spark plugs. Repeat 30,000 (see above),  90,000 miles repeat 30,000.  Timing chain- no replacement interval Radiator coolant  Subaru Super Coolant, replace at 11 years or 132,000 miles. If topping off, be sure to use correct fluid. -

CVT transmission what is it	this 2nd generation 'Lineartronic' Continuously Variable Transmission is the only automatic transmission available in 2.0L  Impreza models. It has been revised to be smoother, quieter, smaller and lighter than the 1st generation 2010/11 Legacy/Outback CVT. It replaces a 4 speed automatic used, with updates, since 1990.  What is a Lineartronic CVT transmission?  CVT is an acronym for Continuously Variable Transmission. 'Lineartronic' is Subaru's brand name for their CVT.  CVT is a gearless chain drive transmission that efficiently matches RPMs and power  for better fuel economy because the engine runs at its most efficient RPM over a range of speeds.  The Subaru CVT uses a chain. > Premium and Limited models have steering wheel mounted paddle shifters with 6 selected settings, or 'gears', for drivers who want more control and better performance. > Maintenance: uses Subaru CVT  oil. The oil does not need to be changed unless driven under very hard or frequent towing in which case replace at 25000 miles. PZEV emissions- what is it	What is PZEV, a brief, simple summary The EPA says a PZEV is clean running gas engine car based on emissions testing for carbon-containing compounds, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, and other tailpipe nastiness.  It is required on 2012 Imprezas sold in CA, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, OR, PA, VT, WA. It costs $300 1. A charcoal canister catches unburned gas left in the engine when it's turned off so it doesn't just evaporate.  2. Fuel injectors that close tighter when they're not in use. 3. A finer mesh in the catalytic converter, as well as optimized placement of its precious metal. 4.  The engine's electronic brain is tuned to run the hot at start up to help the catalytic converter heat up so it can start doing its job faster.

MODEL OVERVIEW  2012 IMPREZA STANDARD FEATURES start with the 2.0i model standard features,  then read what the model upgrades - New New New - this is an all new redesigned Impreza due late November 2011. The car is the same overall length but has been redesigned with considerably more interior room. Because the wheelbase has been increased 0.9" and the the windshield more angled ('A' pillars moved 7.9" forward), all the doors are larger. The front doors are 5" larger. Visibility and seating positions improved- The top of the doors is now 2.4"  lower than previous models, the front seats raised .67", rear seat .79", and the new dashboard is flatter. The result is that you sit higher which is both more comfortable and allows great visibility. Digital radio broadcast signal for improved clarity

HD radio was offered in the 2011 Forester Limited and Touring models.
For 2012 its available on Impreza and outback Limited models

The ‘HD’ in ‘HD Radio’ is part of iBiquity Digital’s brand name for its digital AM and FM radio technology.
It does not mean either hybrid digital or high definition, it is simply the branding language for this new technology.
HD Radio broadcasting is free, there are no subscription fees.
You can get digital AM and FM stations, including HD2 and HD3 multicast channels.
HD Radio broadcasting is your favorite local AM and FM stations broadcasting digitally, producing radically improved sound.

Unwanted pops, hisses and dropouts are a thing of the past with an HD Radio receiver."
HD2 multicasting means more FM channels and new programming available from local FM stations, which you can only hear on your new HD Radio receiver.
Across the country, local FM stations are offering a wide variety of new formats on their HD2 channels: reggae, blues, classic jazz, future country, new alternative, deep tracks, bluegrass and local artists.
The service includes iTunes Tagging. iTunes Tagging lets you capture information about a song on the radio and store it on your iPod by pushing the "Tag" button on the HD Radio receiver. When your iPod is connected to iTunes, a list of tagged songs will appear which can be previewed, purchased, and downloaded.
