Certain 2005-2008 Forester and 2005~2007 Impreza models require permanent removal of the one-way fuel valve located in the fuel tank. The valve is in a sub-chamber in the fuel tank and when the tank’s fuel level drops below 1½ gallons, the sub-chamber is intended to provide a reserve for the fuel pump during vehicle cornering. However, the one-way valve may inadvertently act in such a way as to prevent fuel from refilling the sub-chamber, failing to provide the intended reserve. If this were to happen, the fuel pump could momentarily draw air causing the engine to experience a sporadic misfire condition resulting in possible damage to the vehicle’s catalytic converter. (The “Check Engine” light will illuminate alerting the driver that the catalytic converter efficiency has degraded beyond an acceptable level and may be releasing air pollutants that exceed emission standards.) This Service Program will remove the valve. Program #WVL-22

turbo charger oil supply pipe may be damaged | From SoA, a voluntary Safety
Recall to inspect, modify and possibly replace the turbo charger oil supply
pipe on approximately 16,715 07 & 08 Legacy GT, Outback 5XT, 2008 Impreza
WRX (except STI) and a very small number of early production 2009 Forester
XT models.
Affected vehicles may have a turbo charger oil supply pipe that was deformed due to misalignment during the assembly process. If the pipe is deformed, vibration experienced during normal driving could result in a crack developing over time, causing an engine oil leak. There is a safety risk associated with this condition. If leaking oil contacts components operating at high temperatures, an engine compartment fire could result. This recall will involve inspection of the turbo charger oil supply pipe for proper alignment. If the pipe is found to be properly aligned, it will be necessary to install a support bracket as a precautionary measure to increase rigidity of the pipe. If the pipe is found to be deformed, a new replacement pipe and support bracket must be installed. Recall Campaign Bulletin released week of 10/6/08. Notification letters to be mailed week of 10/20/08. Campaign code WVF-16. |

| 8/13/08 | STI ECM reprogramming | Service Program (WVE-15) | 'SOA has initiated a Service Program (WVE-15) to reprogram the Engine Control Module (ECM) on certain 2008 STIs. Under certain harsh driving patterns, specifically when repeatedly or continuously operating the engine above the “red-line” (RPM above 6,700), abnormal combustion could occur resulting in serious internal engine damage in the form of broken piston ring lands. This abnormal combustion condition is the result of an “over lean” fuel mixture caused by a combination of fuel cut activation and high turbo boost. To prevent this condition from occurring, Subaru has developed a modification to the Engine Control Module software logic that will improve combustion management above “red-line” engine speed. This revised logic will not adversely affect peak vehicle performance. On or around August 14, 2008, dealers will be sent affected VIN lists by their Area Service Office. Dealers are requested to immediately perform this campaign on all affected vehicles in dealer inventor. Prior to performing repairs, confirm coverage by using the Vehicle Coverage Inquiry in the Dealer Communication System (DCS). Vehicles that have been updated by Subaru will appear "completed" in DCS. Subaru will mail owner notification letters on or around August 15, 2008.' | ||||

Rear Wheel Bearings may, over time, develop a noise condition that causes the bearing to produce a whining sound | Subaru. has initiated an
Extended Warranty Program for Rear Wheel Bearings on certain 2005 and early
2006 model year Legacy and Outback models. Coverage will be extended to
8 years or 100,000 miles.
During a quality review, Subaru discovered that there is a possibility that one or both of an affected vehicle's Rear Wheel Bearings may, over time, develop a noise condition that causes the bearing to produce a whining sound. This sound does not pose a safety issue and does not adversely affect the normal operation of the bearing. However, if the vehicle experiences this condition, it should be corrected by replacing the affected bearing, which will eliminate the sound. As a result of this finding and in the interest of customer satisfaction, SOA is extending the Rear Wheel Bearing warranty coverage period for the affected vehicles to 8 years (96 months) or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first. | 4/2008 | 2002, 2003 Impreza wagons | loose rear gate stay stud bolts and welded nuts | SoA has initiated a voluntary Safety Recall to inspect and possibly perform repairs to the rear gate stay stud bolts and welded nuts on approximately 36,791 2002 and 2003 Impreza wagons. Campaign #WVD-14. Affected vehicles may have been manufactured with tailgate stays (also known as tailgate struts) that were inadequately tightened during production. The left and right tailgate stays are designed to support the tailgate when it is placed in an upright position. Each is connected to the tailgate by means of a stud bolt that is attached directly to a welded nut located within the tailgate. If one or both of the stud bolts were inadequately tightened, the loose stud bolt may put unintended stress at the area around the welded nut. Over time and after repeated tailgate operation (opening and closing), this condition could result in the welded nut, along with the tailgate stay, separating and detaching from the tailgate causing the tailgate to close unexpectedly. Owners will be notified
| 2/13/08 | All models | Radio static when the radio and rear window defogger are on at the same time, | Customer complaint of radio
static when the radio and rear window defogger are on at the same time,
there is the possibility of a break in one or more of the defogger grids.
When the grid is broken, a high resistance field is created at the break
point which can create static on some radio stations. The level of resistance
is usually high enough to create a field of interference which projects
out from the glass. The break can be detected visually or by using a portable
radio.
Using a portable radio, set the radio to the same frequency and station being disturbed by static. From the outside of the vehicle, slowly move the radio’s antenna across the defogger grids. When interference is encountered, inspect that specific area closely for a break. Depending upon the size of the break, a magnifying glass and/or eyeloupe may be required. Once the break is identified, it should be repaired using the Permatex® repair kit instead of replacing the rear glass. Note: Make sure to carefully read and follow the instructions and precautions that are included with the Permatex® repair kit. Permatex® Quick Grid™ Rear Window Defogger Repair Kit, part # 15067, used for repairing damaged rear window defogger grids, is available at local automotive parts stores. |

this is not a recall.
A response to concerns about ABS performance on 2002-03 WRX 5spd of a feeling of a delayed response when ABS is activated during inital braking over bumps, potholes or other low friction road surfaces. With assistance from Subaru, NHTSA conducted over 11,500 tests to investigate this report and while NHTSA and Subaru did not indentify a problem that would require a recall, they did identify a certain ABS performance characteristic that might cause some driver's to identify a delayed response feel during the first second of braking. Following this analysis, Subaru developed an alternative method of calibrating the ABS to address this performance characteristic. No perceptible improvement in overall stopping difference will result. If the driver of an affected vehicle encounters this set of conditions and is uncomfortable, a complimentary ABS with different calibration is available. This is not mandatory, rather this service is being offered to enhance customer satisfation. Only some owners will experience this ABS characteristic and SoA will contact owners of eligible vehicles by mail through October 2005. |

| 2/6/04 | 1999-02 Phase2 2.5L engines, Legacy, Outback, Forester | possible external coolant leak at the cylinder head gaskets | Certain 1999 through 2002
2.5L equipped vehicles may experience an external coolant leak at the head
gaskets. As a precautionary measure, SOA is adding a special conditioner
to the engine cooling system. This conditioner prevents leaks from occurring
and corrects existing leaks.
Only early Phase II 2.5 liter engines are affected. Phase I 2.5 liter engines (some 1999 model year and prior years) are not affected. Countermeasures applied to the manufacturing process for those 2002 and later VINS not affected by this campaign have eliminated the need for this campaign to be performed on those vehicles. In the future, it will be necessary to add Genuine Subaru Cooling System Conditioner to the SUBARU vehicle cooling system whenever the engine coolant is replaced. If the vehicle owner has this repair performed promptly, Subaru will extend warranty coverage on cylinder head gasket external coolant leaks to a period of 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Warranty coverage begins on the date the vehicle was delivered to the first retail purchaser or on the date the vehicle was first placed in demo or rental service. The owner must have Genuine Subaru Cooling System Conditioner added to the vehicle at any subsequent cooling system services at the interval specified in the Warranty and Maintenance Booklet under the heading “Schedule of Inspection and Maintenance Services”. Resulting damage caused by a lack of maintenance or low coolant level will not be covered. |

Subaru of America’s (SOA) position regarding repairs to Subaru vehicles
necessitated by vehicle modifications, racing or abusive driving habits.
Under normal driving conditions SOA warrants wear items such as clutch
discs and brake pads under the terms of the Basic New Car Warranty. If
a clutch disc or a brake pad needs to be replaced at low mileage, the dealership
must satisfy itself that the replacement is not the
result of one of the exclusions listed. See image below. |
