SAFETY  2010 LEGACY

11/10/09  Bumper Crash Test-2010 Legacy is the first car with all 4 bumper damage estimates under $1,000 and 'leapfrogs the competition for bumper protection', from the IIHS
' The new Legacy earns an acceptable rating in a recent series of tests to assess and compare how well bumpers resist damage in everyday fender-benders...
The Legacy is the first car the Institute has tested to limit damage to the bumper system in all 4 tests, and it's the first car with all 4 damage estimates under $1,000...
.. The Institute rates bumpers good, acceptable, marginal, or poor based on performance in 4 tests — front and rear full-width impacts at 6 mph and front and rear corner impacts at 3 mph. Each vehicle is run into a steel barrier that mimics the design of a car bumper, with the barrier's plastic absorber and flexible cover simulating typical cars' energy absorbers and plastic bumper covers. These tests are designed to drive bumper improvements that lead to better damage resistance in real-world crashes.
The biggest improvement for the Legacy was in the front full-width test. The ‘07 model sustained more than $4,000 damage (based on ‘09 parts and labor costs) when the bumper underrode the barrier. In contrast, the 2010 model sustained less than $900 in the same test.
"Subaru made some simple changes to the Legacy's front bumper," Nolan explains, "and they paid off in significantly lower repair costs." Compared with the new model, the 2007 Legacy sustained nearly 5 times as much damage in this one 6 mph impact. The main difference is that the 2010 Legacy's front reinforcement bar is a little taller, more than 6 inches wider, and more than 1½ inches higher off the ground. This kept the Legacy's bumper engaged with the barrier during the test, preventing it from sliding under the barrier. Plus the bumper bar extends to the corners to help protect headlights and fenders.
"The Legacy leapfrogs the competition for bumper protection," Nolan says. "These common sense bumper changes will help keep repair costs down in low-speed crashes." from IIHS.

8/27/09  Top Safety Picks   The 2010 Subaru Legacy and Subaru Outback are the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's newest Top Safety Pick award winners. "To qualify for Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of good in the Institute's front, side, and rear tests and be equipped with electronic stability control. Criteria to win are tough because the award is intended to drive continued safety improvements such as top crash test ratings and the rapid addition of electronic stability control, which is standard on the Legacy and Outback." 6/11/09 Crash tests - Subaru and most other cars don't do very well on the combined bumper test by IIHS, testing 6 mph full width and 3 mph corner impacts.
Subaru bumpers are designed to meet the standard 5mph full width impact, your common bump in a parking lot or heavy stop-and-go traffic.
Corner bumps, on the other hand, leave softball sized dent on most cars these days because most bumpers are not designed for that and offer little internal corner support. And that is probably IIHS's point in doing a 3mph bumper corner test...
From IIHS- '4 tests (front and rear full-width impacts at 6 mph and front and rear corner impacts at 3 mph) produce the kinds and amounts of damage that commonly occur in low-speed collisions. Each vehicle is run into a steel barrier designed to mimic the design of a car bumper, with the barrier's plastic absorber and flexible cover simulating typical cars' energy absorbers and plastic bumper covers. These tests are designed to drive bumper improvements that lead to better protection from damage in a range of real-world crashes.'
> Test results scores are, from best to worse. 'G' good, 'A' acceptable, 'M' marginal, and 'P' poor.
> Results in the final 'overall weighted average damage' column of the midsize car category are: 2006-2009 Legacy $2080. This is better than the 06-07 Accord $2373, 06-09 Jetta $2499 and 06-08 Maxima $2562, all which rate 'P' for Poor. Doing  slightly better with a 'M' for Marginal rating are the 06-09 Galant $1042, the lowest amount, 07-09 Camry $1221, 07-09 Fusion $1325, 06-09 Volvo S40 $1442..  No car in this category rated either A or G (the best)...
> Results in the final 'overall weighted average damage' column in the small car category are: 08-09 Impreza $1435 for a 'M' Marginal rating. This is similar to the Mazda 3 $1183, nd Nissan Sentra $1234. The lowest damage amount and an 'A" rating was to the 08-09 Focus $691 and Scion Xb $892. Getting a bottom 'P' Poor rating was the 09 Corolla $1872, 06-09 Civic $2015, 06-09 Prius $2652, 06-09 Rabbit $2727..

3/24/09  NEW roof strength roll-over rating system. Forester does well. 'The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is launching a new roof strength rating system to help consumers pick vehicles that will help protect them in rollover crashes. Twelve small SUVs are the first to be put to the test. Only 4 earn the top rating of good. The Volkswagen Tiguan has the strongest rated roof, and the Kia Sportage has the weakest among the 2008-09 models evaluated.
This new rating system is based on Institute research showing that occupants in rollover crashes benefit from stronger roofs. Vehicles rated good must have roofs that are more than twice as strong as minimum federal safety standards require.
The Tiguan, Subaru Forester, Honda Element, and Jeep Patriot earn good ratings. The Suzuki Grand Vitara, Chevrolet Equinox, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, and Mitsubishi Outlander are rated acceptable. Roofs on the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape are marginal, and the Kia's is poor.
"We anticipate that our roof strength test will drive improved rollover crash protection the same way our frontal offset and side impact consumer test programs have led to better protection in these kinds of crashes," says Institute president Adrian Lund...
...How roofs are evaluated: In the Institute's roof strength test, a metal plate is pushed against 1 side of a roof at a constant speed. To earn a good rating, the roof must withstand a force of 4 times the vehicle's weight before reaching 5 inches of crush. This is called a strength-to-weight ratio. For an acceptable rating, the minimum required strength-to-weight ratio is 3.25. A marginal rating value is 2.5. Anything lower than that is poor.
... Cars have been built to meet the same roof crush standard, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 216, since 1973. The rule was extended in 1994 to include all passenger vehicles up to a gross weight rating of 6,000 pounds. Many SUVs and pickups are heavier, so they're exempt. In 2005, the government proposed an upgrade to cover these larger vehicles and require the roofs on all passenger vehicles to have a strength-to-weight ratio of 2.5. Many vehicles already meet this ratio and would earn only a marginal rating in the Institute's new roof strength test. A final rule is still pending...' more from IIHS.org

These terms from Subaru-speak.Many other sites have good information. Please check links below

ACTIVE safety: helps prevent accidents:

All Wheel Drive:
Continuous AWD: Subaru manual transmissions use Continuous AWD, normally 50/50 front-to-back power split and use a mechanical viscous center differential to to vary the power split when there is a loss of traction.
Active AWD: Subaru's automatic transmission use Active AWD, mostly front wheel drive and uses traction sensing computer input to electronically vary the front to rear power split via a hydraulic multi-plate transfer clutch.
VTD AWD (variable torque distribution). New in 2001, VTD transfers powers front to back electronically. The power split is 45/55 front/rear and the rear bias is designed for a nicer, more luxury car feel as opposed to the front bias of the Active AWD system. Usually 45/55 front to back split but that varies according to wheel slippage. In 2003 VTD AWD is used on Outback VDC, GT with Sport Shift automatic transmission and Impreza WRX with automatic transmission

Anti-lock Brakes (ABS): A brake system that prevents wheel lockup in hard braking conditions so the driver can maintain control and not skid. Anti-lock brakes will 'pulse' when activated under firm brake pedal pressure because they are pumping the brakes at a very high rate.

PASSIVE safety

Daytime driving lights: front (only the front) lights are automatically on when the car is moving. These may be less bright than normal headlight beams.

SEAT BELTS
Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR): pull the belt all the way out and it locks into place and ratchets back. Easy for adjusting child seats.
Seat belt Pre-tensioners: automatically tightens the seatbelt in the event of an accident reducing the force which the occupant will hit the belt
ELR: Emergency Locking Retractor: allows the seatbelt to move free until rapid deceleration is detected at which time the belt locks.

AIRBAGS (SRS - Supplemental Restraint System): A safety air bag inflates to prevent the driver from colliding with the steering wheel or and the passenger with the front dashboard. Designed to activate in moderate to severe front impacts. The bag deflates within milliseconds. Must be used with seat belts. Most airbags after 1998 are de-powered and deploy with less force than earlier versions so people who sit closer to them may experience less initial contact.
Newer front airbags deploy according driver's position and distance form the steering wheel, the passenger side deplys according to passenger weight

Side Air Bags: air bags that deploy in side impacts to cushion and prevent the occupant from hitting the interior. Subaru's side airbags are seat mounted. Used with seat belts.

Side Curtain Airbags airbags that run above the top of front and/or rear side windows and drop down to protect the occupant's head from hitting the window in a side impact.

Airbag danger: Try to sit app 10" from the airbags. Folks are not hurt by airbags because of height, weight or age. Usually they were too close to the air bag or were not properly belted in and they were thrown forward toward the airbag as it came toward them.
Avoid being too close. Adjust the seat position. Need to sit close? Consider pedal extenders. Infants and children under 12 should always sit in the back seat. Many newer cars detect front occupant position or weight to determine how or if the bag deploys.

On-Off Switches: airbag on-off switches are available only by petitioning for an airbag exception. Requires an unsafe rear seat such as a supercab truck with sidefacing seats, or cars with no back seat, or when someone with a medical condition requires them to sit in the front passenger seat.
See links below for more information.

Tire pressure monitoring US Safety regulations require all new 2008 and newer 4-wheeled vehicles weighing 10,000 lbs or less to have with a monitoring system detecting a 25% drop in tire pressure.
TIre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) measures tire pressure using a small sensor inside each wheel. When a tire drops app 25% in pressure a warning light on the dashboard comes on. You then need to check each tire to see which one is low. Cold weather will cause a pressure drop because cold air is less dense than warm so the monitor may come on in seasonally.

LATCH Child Seat System: (Lower Anchors and Tether for CHildren): consists of lower child seat anchors at the base of the rear seats and a tether attachment in the rear. This allows a child seat to be firmly and securely anchored at the base and top to minimize movement. Requires a newer seat (2002?) with the appropriate attaching straps. Check your child seat for specifics.

child seat Latch system tether attaches to hold the seat in place
The child seat tether holds the child seat upright and prevents it from tipping forward. The headrest in the photo could be removed
All information subject to change and correction.

Required on all vehicles and child safety seats manufactured on or after September 1, 2002.
Cars, minivans, and light trucks will be required to have anchor points between the vehicle's seat cushion and the seat back in at least two rear seating positions, and a top
tether anchor (with the exception of convertibles).  Child safety seats will have a lower set of attachments that fasten to the vehicle anchors.  Most forward-facing child
safety seats will also have a top strap (tether) that attaches to the top anchor in the vehicle. Together they make up the LATCH system.

Why? LATCH bars avoid seat belt incompatibility from different types of seat belt retractors, different belt anchor locations (too far forward), plus
differing vehicle belt routings that people found confusing.

Where are the anchors: The anchor bars are in the crease of the rear seats. By law, the vehicle LATCH bar spacing is standardized at 11 inches (280mm)
so that both the flexible (webbing) and rigid (metal) type of LATCH attachments will work in all vehicles.

How many seats? Very few vehicles could fit three LATCH positions across a back seat. It was decided that at least two are needed in back seats but
vehicle manufacturers can optionally add more if they fit. In limited cases, it's possible to use the inboard LATCH bars to put a seat in the center position, but
for this to be safe, this method must be specifically allowed by the child restraint manufacturer for that model restraint. There are limits as to how wide and
narrow is safe for use by a child seat. Use the vehicle seat belts in the center rear unless the child restraint model instructions specifically say the center
     inboard bars are ok.

Retrofit? Yes, there may be a kit, contact your seat manufacturer to see if they make a retrofit kit for your child seat. Do not use a kit from anothe
rcompany, the design of the system and angles of attachment could be different enough to cause crash loads that would break the system. Don't mix parts
from different manufacturers no matter how similar they might look.

11/20/2006Tribeca, Forester XT Sports, Legacy GT sedan with Navigation are on the list of only 13 cars that earned the top rating from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (www.IIHS.org).
"The Institute rates vehicles good, acceptable, marginal, or poor based on performance in high-speed front and side crash tests plus evaluations of seat/head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts. The first requirement for a vehicle to become a TOP SAFETY PICK is to earn good ratings in all three Institute tests. A new requirement for 2007 is that the winning vehicles must offer ESC Ielectronic stability control). This addition is based on Institute research indicating that ESC significantly reduces crash risk, especially the risk of fatal single-vehicle crashes, by helping drivers maintain control of their vehicles during emergency maneuvers."
Only 13 2007 models earned the top rating. They are Large car: Audi A6 manufactured in Dec. 2006 and later; Midsize cars: Audi A4, Saab 9-3, Subaru Legacy equipped with optional electronic stability control; Minivans: Hyundai Entourage, Kia Sedona Luxury SUV: Mercedes M class, Volvo XC90; Midsize SUV: Acura RDX, Honda Pilot, Subaru B9 Tribeca; Small SUV:Honda CR-V,  Subaru Forester equipped with optional electronic stability control.
ALSO-RANS Rear protection isn't good. These vehicles earned good ratings in front and side crash tests. They have electronic stability control, standard or optional. They would have won 2007 TOP SAFETY PICK awards if their seat/head restraints also had earned good ratings. Instead rear crash protection is rated acceptable, marginal, or poor (Honda reports that the seat/head restraints in the only Civic model with electronic stability control wouldn’t be rated good).
Acceptable rear protection: Audi A3, BMW 3-series 4dr, Lexus IS 250/350; Marginal rear protection: Acura TL, Honda Odyssey, Lexus ES 350, Lexus GS 350, Toyota Camry, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Toyota Prius, Toyota RAV4; Poor rear protection:Honda Accord 4dr, Infiniti M35, Nissan Quest, Toyota Avalon, Toyota Sienna"
