back-up camera in rear view mirror
If there's a cat, child, dog, bicycle etc behind the car, the back-up camera is a great safety device. I didn't have any of those handy, so please pretend the 'meow' sign is a cat, or dog, child, bike etc.
The camera display is in the left side of the rear view mirror when the car is in reverse. This mirror is only available with moonroof package.

News and updates This is an unofficial, unauthorized website and information is subject to frequent change and updating.

expect updates

1/3/2013, Recall- optional puddle lights (small outside lights under each door) may short circuit when exposed to saltwater, which could lead to overheating and possible fire. Models involved are the 2010 and 2011 Legacy and Outback, 2009-2012 Foresters sold before January 2012, and 2006-2012 Tribecas sold before January 2012.  Reportedly around 54,000 cars could be involved, and the repair will be new wiring with a fuse.  Recall #WQE-41

6/30/10- earthquake related inventory shortages continue
While the earthquake was mid-March, the effect of the factory closures and part shortages is only now fully impacting dealer inventory. For the past few months, cars already in the system and/or enroute before the earthquake have continued to arrive. Now that those cars have already arrived, dealers are expecting far fewer cars than they need. Supply varies by car line, but overall the selection available will be less, and especially so of more popular models, packages or colors that sell quickly anyway.
When dealers don't have as many new cars to sell, they don't get as many trade-ins. When there aren't as many trade-ins, auction cars tend to sell at higher prices, so this temporary shortage has a ripple effect..

5/27/11- Subaru has conflicting statements about Recommending vs Requiring synthetic or regular oil.
> Synthetic is required on all 2011 turbo and 2.5L Foresters
> 2011 Outback, Legacy, Tribeca, Impreza, (exc turbos)- Some owners manuals will recommend using synthetic but not require it. Owners manuals printed around March 2011 presumably indicate all Subarus require synthetic oil.
All 2011 models use 5w-30 except the Forester X which uses 0w-20
2011 maintenance schedule

4/11/11- Factory orders end for 2011s-
Factory orders are no longer accepted for any 2011 vehicles. This is normal as 2011 model production winds down and starts the shift to 2012,  and also to better manage limited parts and resources after the March 11 earthquake. In late March, some lower volume Outback and Legacy models had been already removed from the order list- manual transmissions, 3.6Rs, uncommon Option Packages.

1/15/11- reduced Mobile Internet WiFi pricing. Now $426 installed, with $14.95 mo (was $522 with $29mo). 1yr subscription required

12/15/10 Body side moldings now available - body color moldings to minimize door dings. $240

12/6/10 new optional Leather shift knob, automatic only #JBA

11/27/10  spark plug replacement interval   on all 2011 Outback, Legacy, Forester, Impreza 4 cylinder non-turbo, turbo, and 6cylinder, the spark plug replacement interval is now 52,500 miles, 52.5 months, or 84000km. This replaces the 60,000 mile, 5 year interval  This is new, and in maintenance books printed Sept, 2010

11/20/10 Share the Love v. 3.  Buy a Subaru, choose a charity, and Subaru donates $250. Its the 3rd Share the Love Event, and it runs 11/2010 - 1/3/11 . 2010 charities Ocean Conservancy, Big Brothers Big Sisters, ASPCA, Habitat for Humanity, Meals On Wheels. No, its not tax deductible, you didn't pay.  Click for photos of the advertising to publicize the 2010 Share the Love Event

10/31/10 new options
Body side moldings- body color moldings to minimize door dings. Factory installed only, not currently available as an uninstalled part.

Interior Illumination Kit. Includes soft ambient light in the footwell area, around the center console cupholders and in the storage pocket in front of the shift lever. Very cool option and not distracting. Available as a stand-alone option or a package with Illuminated Sill Plates. Previously available on 2010s, and now available on 2011s.

10/6/10 The 2011 Outback gets an overall 4 Stars in the new stricter government crash tests. New crash tests for 2011 includes side pole and barriers crashes, and a new woman (97 lbs). scroll down for the safety ratings on this page

9/26 Safety.  2011 - and 2010- Outback get the Top Safety Pick and top rating on all the IIHS.org crash tests. Click for IIHS test results
Good performance in Frontal offset test results, Side impact test, Roof strength test, Rear crash protection/head restraint ratings and standard electronic stability control.

9/15 roof rack spread increase - the new Outback crossbars have a fixed 30" spread width which may not be enough for some uses like longer kayaks etc. The optional heavy-duty cargo basket can be attached to the crossbars, and then the round crossbars (or Yakima, Thule etc) can be attached to the basket for a 36" spread. The cargo basket is handy for carrying many other things as well.  Current list price for the cargo basket is $249.95

8/23  the warranty maintenance owner's booklet error-   the owner's maintenance booklet may have incorrectly omitted the recommended 105,000 mile 2.5L timing belt replacement. The timing chain on the  3.6L 6 cylinder, no inspection or replacement needed

August 12-  re  tire and steering wheel shimmy/vibration around 60mph that has been reported on some 2011 and 2010 Outback and Legacy and widely discussed online. Its an uncommon issue though if you read online you might think its more widesprerad. Subaru has a number of possible remedies to help, from rotating and balancing the tires with road-pressure applied, to engine mount and steering wheel shims, linkage bushing replacement.
See your local dealer service dept if you think you have this problem and contact SoA at 800 SUBARU3 to register your comcern

August 6, 2010 110 volt power outlet now available on 2011 and 2010 Outback and Legacy models. 100 watts. 2 prong power outlet is in the back of the center console for charging cell phones, laptops etc.

July 29, 2010 new Subaru Synthetic 5W-30 oil is available (full page 2011 maintenance schedule and service intervals)

July 23, 2010 - Recall. 2010 and 2011 Outbacks and Legacys with a manual transmission built April 28,1010 - June 23, 2010.  App 809 vehicles are missing a lubrication passge in the transmission transfer case which could eventually lead to gear failure. The lubrication passage will be opened in the affected vehicles. Cars with 6,250 miles will need third through sixth gears as well as the main shaft. Letters will be sent to owners late July. Recall WVS-29

July 15- new optional Wi-Fi mobile internet for 2011 and 2010 Outbacks is now available. This mobile router mounts in the rear cargo area providing internet access for multiple wi-fi devices such as laptops, phones, game devices, Wii, iphones etc. Great for families with kids who like to study or play while traveling and camping, and especially for business people who want internet access on the road.  Range is up to app 150ft depending on line-of-sight access and buildings. Plugs into the cargo are power outlet and the car must be running or the key turned to 'accessory' to power the unit.
The router can carry many connections at the same time while your typical wireless access card is only good for the single device it plugs into.
Internet access is 3G supplied by AutoNet Mobile and coverage is national, see the coverage map.
Check below and see your dealer for current pricing.
Requires a 1 year contract at $29 month for 1GB, $59 for 5GB, with the first 3 months free (promo code 'Subaru').
Connection is 802.11a/b/g, with USB, ethernet ports. Security features include user controlled passwords, WEP or WPA  encrytion, VPN tunnel etc.  Optional services available from autonet include 'Find My Car' vehicle tracking and 'Geo Fence' location notification.
Available factory installed for $529 list price, or from Subaru dealer parts dept for $499 part #H001SAJ200

July 11-  new optional side window moldings are available on 2011 Outback and Legacy. See photos above. These moldings will help minimize rain dripping in when your windows are open. They look good. Dark gray with chrome trim. Available from your dealer, not from the factory.

WHAT'S NEW FOR 2011 - a brief summary. scroll down for all features

The 2011 Outback only has few changes from the very successful 2010 model

new fold-in outside mirrors
new Limited now includes XM satellite radio, 3 mos free subscription
new options rear view auto dimming mirror with compass, Homelink and new back-up camera,  requires sunroof. The mirror is still available without the camera.

new colors ruby red pearl, and caramel bronze pearl both with ivory (tan) interior. The only colors available with gray interior are silver, dark gray and sky blue.

gone but will be back optional interior kit with illuminated cupholders, console and footwells. Late availability. Was available for 2010s.
gone  harvest gold color discontinued (replaced by caramel bronze).

new  to welcome new owners, Subaru sends a welcome packet- a guide to owner benefit, company contact info, various websites etc.  They're not including contact info for your dealer which should be the first place to go for specific questions about operating the new car, or for service, comments, help, advice etc.

Plus you can request a free 'Badge of Ownership' to put on the car to show and help spread the Love. If you currently have a Subaru, you can get one too. Its a small round badge that you adhere anyplace but typically car logos, names, and emblems are put on the back of the car or the sides just in front of the doors. Photos, link here

6/23/10 - the 2011s are starting to arrive at dealers
6/8/10 -  2011 brochures start arriving at dealers
5/7/10 -  2011 model prices and features announced.  No major changes for the 2nd year of the very successful Outback redesigned for for the 2010 model.
Base prices raised $200, 2.5i and 3.6R Limited +$520 with the XM radio now part of the h/k audio system.  Destination raised $30 to $725 from $695 (Ak $875 and Northeast states may vary).
All the details on the 11s are not out yet. So far, outside mirrors now fold in, Harman/Kardon radio now includes XM satellite radio with a $300 price increase. The 2.5i and 2.5i Premium no longer have a stand alone moonroof or Harman/Kardon audio Option Package. New colors: Caramel Bronze Pearl replaces Harvest Gold, and Ruby Red Pearl added.  Moonroof package now includes a new auto dimming rear view mirror/compass/Homelink with new rear view back-up camera similar to whats in the 2010 Tribeca. New optional body side moldings and rear chrome garnish. Still no Memory Seat on any model.
Hundreds of choices: It can be confusing. There are 9 Outback models for 2011 with 22 factory Option Packages and 9 colors for a total of 198 possible model, transmission and color combinations, plus there are 5 PZEV emission Outbacks with 15 Option Packages and 9 colors for another 135 possible combinations. And then there are many individual options and upgrades. Your dealer might not have the exact model you want and an order can take from 6-12 weeks +/-.

Hundreds of choices but Still No...  these are things I would like to see on the 2011 Outback but won't....

> Still an excessive and confusing number of model, trim and color combinations resulting in unbalanced inventory and excess orders and trades
> still no memory driver seat with automatic memory mirrors on Limiteds;
> still no 10 second power-off  delay to close windows, sunroof etc;
> still no width adjustable roof rack crossbars;
> still no scuff resistant unpainted bumpers;
> still no 'rugged road' stripped down model with oversize tires, vinyl flooring and seats etc;
> still no 2" trailer hitch to replace the small 1.25" one;
> still no 6 way power, height adjustable, passenger seat... the passenger is important too....
> still no flat unchipped emergency-use 'hide-a-key' that at least opens the door, that you can carry in a wallet/purse or hide under the car someplace

4/19 Outback and Legacy model information released. Early information only and orders accepted. No feature changes, prices, or specs announced yet, so no word on fold-in mirrors for example or any other changes/upgrades for the 2011s. Outback model line seems to remain the same as 2010. The models are 2.5i manual or CVT, Premium manual or CVT, Limited CVT, 3.6R 5AT, 3.6R Premium 5AT, 3.6R Limited 5AT.
Minor Option Package changes: package #03 has been dropped (h/k audio package), and on the 2.5i Premium, the moonroof and h/k audio is only available with the all weather package. Harman/Kardon stereo now includes satellite radio. New colors: Caramel Bronze Pearl replaces Harvest Gold, and Ruby Red Pearl added.  Moonroof package now includes new auto dimming mirror/compass/homelink with back-up camera. It works well, see 2010 Tribeca page for pictures, and is not available with navigation.

MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
subject to change and correction
see your local servicing dealerfor full details and coverage on your specific car

click for the full page 2011 maintenance schedule and service intervals

Break-in period  for the first 1000 miles
Don't race the engine, keep RPMs under 4,000 for the most part and vary the speeds with normal city/highway driving. Don't use the cruise control or go at one steady speed for a long time. Avoid hard starts and stops.

1st oil change all models recommended at 3 mos or 3000 miles whichever comes first. Required on 6 cylinders. 2.5L required at 7,500 miles or 7 mos.
Oil Changes:  3,750 mile 3.75 months oil changes, or at least every 7,500 miles or 7.5 months under very easy driving conditions

2011 maintenance schedule

new July 2010 new Subaru Synthetic 5W-30 oil is available

Note: the warranty maintenance owner's booklet may have incorrectly omitted the recommended 105,000 mile 2.5L timing belt replacement.

7,500 miles: rotate tires
15,000 miles: check hoses, belts, brakes etc. Replace air filtration.
30,000, 60,000, 90,000 miles: 15k service plus replace fluids, filters, inspect timing belt (exc 3.6L)
Spark plug replacement interval   on all 2011 Outback, Legacy, Forester, 4 cylinder non-turbo, turbo, and 6 cylinder, the spark plug replacement interval is 60,000 miles.
Note- early maintenance books printed Sept, 2010 incorrectly have 52,500 miles, 52.5 months, or 84000k have for the spark plug change but its really 60mo/60,000 miles.
CVT Transmission: Life Time oil and should not need to be replaced unless driven under very hard condition like frequent towing in which case change every 24,855 miles. Note- there is no CVT oil dipstick.
Radiator fluid is Super Coolant, with over 10 year replacement schedule.
Timing belt 2.5L 4cylinder:  105,000 mile replacement.
Timing chain on the 3.6L 6 cylinder, no inspection or replacement needed

NHTSA CRASH TEST RESULTS
2011 Outback Overall Rating- 4 stars4 stars
announced 10/5/10
------
2011 Outback star safety rating from NHTSA
2011 Outback star safety rating from NHTSA  thats on the Monroney window sticker
------

New for 2011 models - an enhanced Star Safety Ratings System will now evaluate side pole crash testing and crash prevention technologies and, for the first time, will use female crash test dummies (97 lb), not just men.
Safety ratings range from 1 to 5 stars, with 1 star being the lowest and 5 stars the highest.
One of the most significant changes to the ratings program for consumers is the addition of an Overall Vehicle Score for each vehicle tested.
The Overall Vehicle Score combines the results of a frontal crash test, side crash tests and rollover resistance tests and compares those results to the average risk of injury and potential for vehicle rollover of other vehicles.
Because so many vehicles had reached the highest rating under the old rating criteria, and because the new standards are much more rigorous, not all previously rated 5-star vehicles will remain at 5 stars.
The Pole side impact test will have the car sliding into a 10" diameter pole at 20 mph, hitting by the driver’s door behind the windshield pillar (aka A pillar)
For model year 2011, NHTSA will rate 24 passenger cars, 20 sport utility vehicles, two vans and nine pickups under the new ratings system.

Navigation is by Kenwood, Subaru part # 86271AJ60A

About the optional auto dimming rear view mirror with back-up camera (part of moonroof pkg). By Gentex Co. The RCD (rear camera display) mirror contains a liquid crystal display (LCD) that works with a video camera mounted at the rear of the vehicle to provide a view directly behind the vehicle while backing up. When the vehicle is shifted into "reverse," a display appears automatically through the auto-dimming mirror's reflective surface. The display disappears when the vehicle is shifted into any other gear, a capability that is made possible utilizing Gentex's "transflective" coating and lighting techniques, which result in a bright, high-resolution color image. The RCD mirror is equipped with a compass that utilizes Gentex's proprietary Z-Nav(R) technology, a highly-accurate sensor that determines the vehicle's directional heading, and universal garage door opener as part of the popular Power Moonroof Package. Vehicles equipped with a navigation system feature a Gentex mirror with compass and garage door opener.

CVT automatic transmission-

on 4 cylinder models only

The Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission is the only automatic transmission available in 4 cylinder models. It replaces the automatic .

What is a Lineartronic CVT transmission? CVT is Continuously Variable Transmission. Lineartronic is just Subaru's name for their CVT.  CVT is a gearless chain drive transmission that efficiently matches RPMs and power  for better fuel economy because the engine runs at its most efficient RPM over a range of speeds.
The Subaru CVT uses a chain and  has  'manual mode' with paddle shifters and 6 selected 'gears' for drivers who want more control or better performance and just like to play.

> Maintenance: only use Subaru CVT C-30 oil. The oil does not need to be changed unless driven under very hard or frequent towing in which case replace at 25000 miles. There's no dipstick.

> CVT Background-  new on the 2010 Outback and Legacy.  Subaru's 1989 Justy EVCT was the first production car in the U.S with a CVT, and Fuji has sold their technology to other companies, and they still use it in small cars in Japan. Other companies using a version of a CVT recently are the Toyota hybrids under the name Hybrid Synergy Drive (ie Prius, Highlander, Camry, Lexus etc), Honda Civic hybrid, Nissan Murano, BMW's Mini Cooper, Mitsubishi Lancer, Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Patriot, Ford Freestyle, Five Hundred and Mercury Montego etc etc. (from wiki) more Subaru glossary and terms

VDC is standard on all models
VDC vehicle dynamics control, is an electronic stability control system that measures and monitors steering wheel input, braking, vehicle angle etc and then applies individual brakes and/or reduces engine power to counteract skids or slides to help keep maintain driver control.
TCS Traction Control System is part of VDC. TCS senses spinning wheels and applies the brakes to maintain traction.

Emissions:  4 cylinder models are available in either Fed or PZEV (partial zero emission vehicle)  spec.

PZEV required on all 4 cylinder Outbacks, and Legacys with the CVT,  in CA, CT, NJ, NY, MA, ME, RI, VT, PA, OR, WA

What is PZEV, a brief, simple summary
The EPA says a PZEV is clean running gas engine car based on emissions testing for carbon-containing compounds, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, and other tailpipe nastiness.

It is required on 4 cylinder models sold in CA, CT, NJ, NY, MA, ME, RI, VT, PA, OR, WA
1. A charcoal cannister catches unburned gas left in the engine when it's turned off so it doesn't just evaporate.
2. Fuel injectors that close tighter when they're not in use.
3. A finer mesh in the catalytic converter, as well as optimized placement of its precious metal.
4.  The engine's electronic brain is tuned to run the hot at start up to help the catalytic converter heat up so it can start doing its job faster.

PZEV emission cars are indentified on the Monroney window sticker

Electric parking brake with auto release
Auto release function- wear seatbelt, step on brake pedal, put car in gear, lightly press gas pedal.
Makes a mild sound as it activates or releases so you know its working.
To use in as emergency brake tap or hold the brake button down but only in an serious emergency when you cannot normally brake! This will cause your rear wheels to lock so be very careful.
The mechanical release for the electric brake if the battery is dead is under the car in front of the right rear wheel and it's an awkward process, so keep the battery charged. Dead battery brake release info
4 wheel disc, 4 channel anti-lock, low wear indicator

Uses the electric parking brake.
The Hill Holder system is now electronic and standard on all models.
After the car is started, the system can be turned on by stepping on the brake and then pushing the Hill Holder button by the driver's left knee (next to the parking brake button).
A green light in the upper right dash comes on.
When stopping on a hill 5% or steeper, either going forward up or backwards down a hill,  the Hill Holder activates the electric parking brake and will briefly hold the car from rolling as the driver releases the brake by stepping on the gas.
Makes a mild sound as it activates or releases so you know its working
Works going up or backwards down an incline.
Note: if you are already stopped on an incline and did not press the Hill Holder button,  press the Parking Brake since it will also hold the car and releases when you press the gas pedal.

Hitch- the optional Subaru trailer hitch is 1.25". There is no 'tow package'

Emergency Towing: a flatbed is alway preferred. Never tow with on 2 wheels on the ground. See your owners manual, ch 9, pg 16

Towing the car- a flatbed is always recommended when towing your Outback. A manual transmission can be towed with all wheels on the ground behind a tow truck or motorhome for example, but never with just 2 wheels on the ground.
An automatic or CVT can be towed with all 4 wheels on the ground in an emergency for a very very short distance and at very slow speed (under 20mph) but a flatbed is strongly preferred.

Headlights- standard on all models:

How to get a car
inventory, dealer trade, ordering

Inventory -   Dealers are offered cars for inventory a month or so in advance. The quantity can vary from month to month. Most cars will have a  extra options or upgrades and usually these are features that are popular in the area.  Some, but only a few, will not have any extras at all. Cars in stock are available for immediate purchase and dealers might be more motivated to move them.

"Dealer trade" or "locate". This is when a dealer looks for a vehicle in another dealer's inventory and then trades cars, ie swaps cars, with that dealer.
This means the requesting dealer has to have a car the other dealer will accept back in trade.
There are many people at the dealerships and at Subaru involved in the process.
The vehicle is usually driven from the other location. This can take place within days if a vehicle is already in stock someplace.

Pre-sell, incoming: You wait for a vehicle the dealer already has incoming in their system.

Order:
If you really want a specific vehicle, you can order it. Subaru requires customer information and a deposit.
Once ordered Subaru will give an expected delivery Month.
Within 2-5 weeks, there will be date, an ETA, an estimated time of arrival.  This is not a promise the car will there on a specific day or week and the frequently changes. Your dealer can watch for updates.

Orders are filled as the right model, tranmission, and color is available, on a first order in, first filled  basis.
Usually a vehicle arrives at a dealer within 5-10 weeks (typically 7-8), but delays can happen at any point along the assembly and shipping process, so be patient.
If you are requesting a popular car with a waiting list, or an uncommon car,  it can take longer.

If a certain individual option or accessory is not available for installation, the car will still be sent to the dealer. The accessory can then be added by the dealer but the cost might change.
The dealer wants you to get your car as quickly as you want to get it!
