Q. How often do I rotate tires?
A.   Every other oil change or so, thus usually every 6-10,000 miles. You want the tires to wear evenly for longer wear, better handling, and safety.

Q. Do I need to replace all 4 tires is I have a blow-out?
A.   Because full time all-wheel-drive systems read traction from the tires, mis-matched tires are a bad.
This means all tires need the same tread pattern and size to within 1/4" circumference?. The same tread pattern means they need to be from the same manufacturer. If you have a non-repairable blow-out and the tires aren't brand new you should replace all 4 unless there's less than 1/4" circumference difference.

4/24/17 Ray Magliozzi of Car Talk writes about tires sizes and tread depth, and why its important to all wheel drive.

The conversation was about replacing only 1 (damaged) tire instead of all 4
"....When a mechanic measures your tire and says it’s a 9, it means that you have 9/32 inch of tread left. Most tires start out with about 12/32. When you get to 2 or 3, you’ll see the tire’s wear bars.
Stopping distances are much longer on wet roads when tread depth gets below about 4/32. And performance on snowy roads degrades below 5/32. Since you bought an all-wheel-drive vehicle, I’m guessing weather is an issue where you live. That means those 7s are already getting near the end of their useful lives. Also, you are endangering your all-wheel-drive system by using tires of different sizes.
So what do you do? Manufacturers have different recommendations about how similar tires should be to one another (check your own owner’s manual). But most suggest a tread difference of no more than 2/32 or 3/32 inch.
One solution is to simply keep the new tire you bought and buy three more. That’s the best option from a mechanical point of view. Another option is to have that new tire “shaved” to match its axle-mate. That involves taking a new tire and paying a tire store $30 to turn it into a tire with 15,000 miles on it."

Q. Why do my tires or steering wheel shudder or wobble?
A.   Either your tires are off balance or not aligned properly, or you have a suspension issues, but you get it inspected right away. A few early 2010 Outbacks reportedly had a front tire shudder at highway speed, and it seems to be a tire issue. The fix is to rotate and balance the tires, and if this doesnt work then to replace some suspension components.

Q: Tire pressure monitoring, what is it? US (NHTSA) Safety regulations require all new 4-wheeled vehicles weighing 10,000 lbs or less to have with a monitoring system detecting a 25% drop in pressure on 2008 models.
A. Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) measures tire pressure using a small sensor inside each wheel. When a tire drops 25% in pressure a warning light on the dashboard comes on. You then need to check each tire to see which one is low.
Cold weather Tires usually lose pressure in the cold months so it's common for the light to come on in the first cold months.
Rotate tires No need to do do anything with the sensors for a simple rotation. The sensors are not wheel or position sensitive.
New tires The sensor(s) will need to be programmed if a tire is removed from a wheel.
2nd set of wheels  Get a set of sensors if you get a 2nd set of wheels and tires, example for winter snow wheels and tires, racing wheels and tires etc.
Emergency tire inflation cans The sensors do not like the emergency roadside tire inflation and repair cans that many people carry in the the trunk because the stuff that fills the small hole and seals tire so it can hold air also clogs the pressure pinhole in the monitor. The sensor will need to be replaced.

Watch
for this warning light in the instrument panel.

Am I required to have tire pressure monitors?

If the car is supposed to have monitors, if it came new with monitors,  then a tire/wheel dealer is required to install them when installing wheel/tires on a car

That means either buy monitors or remove them from other wheels and install them.

The National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation, clarified provision 49 U.S.C. 30122(b) within the Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 2010.
The provision exactly states:
A manufacturer, distributor, dealer, or motor vehicle repair business may not knowingly make inoperative any part of a device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment in compliance with an applicable motor vehicle safety standard prescribed under this chapter unless the manufacturer, distributor, dealer, or repair business reasonably believes the vehicle or equipment will not be used (except for testing or a similar purpose during maintenance or repair) when the device or element is inoperative.

The NHTSA further clarified this provision in relation to TPMS in a letter to the Tire Industry Association dated November 22, 2011. In this letter the NHTSA presents the following response to a scenario presented by the TIA:
Scenario: If a motorist purchases a set of aftermarket winter tires and wheels and declines to purchase new TPMS sensors, does the service provider violate 49 USC 30122(b) because they would be installing assemblies that knowingly make the system inoperative?
NHTSB response: In this scenario, we assume that the vehicle has functioning TPMS system at the time he or she purchases aftermarket tires and wheels. In that case, a service provider would violate the “make inoperative” prohibition of 49 USC 30122(b) by installing new tires and wheels that do not have a functioning TPMS system. To avoid a “make inoperative” violation, the service provider would need to decline to install the new tires and rims, use the TPMS sensors from the original wheels (if they are compatible), or convince the motorist to purchase new TPMS sensors and ensure that the sensors aer properly integrated with the vehicle’s TPMS system.

Q. Should I use Nitrogen?
A.  Some dealers are offering Nitrogen is an alternative to inflating tires with normal outside air. It maintains tire pressure better than normal air which leaks out over time and is less sensitive to cold outside temperatures. As a result, Nitrogen minimizes the Tire Pressure Monitoring light coming on.
And because it maintains tire pressure better and is less sensitive to hot and cold, nitrogen can improve economy, increase tire life, and is safer because the tires are less likely to blow-out when driven at high speeds for a long distance, or on hot roads.
Nitrogen has been used by Nascar, Formula One, the Tour de France and the military for years.
Mixing air and nitrogen. Don't put normal air in a tire with nitrogen because you will lose the nitrogen benefit, but it's not dangerous.
The downside to Nitrogen is that you might have to pay for it (but air is free).

Q. How often should I align my car?
A.   As needed. If the car pulls, if the tires show uneven wear, when you get new tires.

top

Q. What kid of tires should I get? The tread pattern will vary according to road conditions, vehicle, your driving style and needs.
Always contact with your local tire dealer if you have any questions and before making any purchase decisions.
A.  Wet climate (rain, snow etc)- M+S mud and snow is the most common for an all-around tire. All Subarus (exc STi) have M+S tires.
A.  Snow climate- studded or studless snow tire, or use chains (see below).
A.  Dry climate- summer tire.
A.  Performance- performance tires are available for most weather/road conditions

Q. What are Summer performance tires?
A. Summer tires were designed for warmer temperatures and high stress use. Because of this they have very large stable tread blocks that are not good in inclement weather. In addition the rubber compound does not maintain elasticity in cold weather. What this means is that the grip level of the tire degrades drastically in cold temperatures even on dry pavement. In the cold a summer tire becomes unpredictable and feels “slippery” when cornering no matter what the weather. This problem is compounded in wet or snowy conditions.

top

Q. What is siping?
A.   Siping is a razor-thin diagonal slice across the tire tread that improves traction on wet or slippery roads. The slice 'opens' as it passes over the surface and helps grab the road as well as disperse water.

Q. Can I use tire chains on a Subaru?
A.   Tire chains. Every winter when there's snow on the ground the question of tire chains on a Subaru comes up.
Its not recommended. There's not enough clearance on the inner side of the tire for chains between the tire and suspension components and brake lines. When a moving car is steered and the front wheels turn, the tire sidewall rolls a bit, and the chains will not lie tight and flat against the tire and it can easily damage suspension and brake components. So its not recommended.
see photos below

All Subarus come with All Season tires - except WRX, STI, and Legacy GT for some odd marketing reason.

If you need better winter traction on a Subaru, the best solution is 4 winter tires, or 4 studded tires for maximum traction.

Need additional temporary traction? Use either Spider Spikes or Quik Trak or other similar device. These go over the tire without going on the inner side of it.

On newer cars that come standard with required Tire Pressure Montors it is recommended to have monitors installed on the winter wheels.

UTQGS: Uniform Tire Quality Grading System
Treadwear, Traction, Temperature Grades

A US govt system helps you compare tires for tread wear life, traction (stopping), and heat.
Of course many other factors impact tire performance including road and weather conditions, inflation pressure, vehicle weight etc as well as driving skills.

Treadwear Grade Measures the tread wear life and helps compare tires made by a same company. The higher the number the longer a tire should wear. A tire with a Tread Wear Grade of 200 should last twice as long as one with 100, 400 should last 2x as long as one with 200 etc, but different manufacturers might use different base numbers.

Traction Grade  Measures the stopping ability of a tire. The higher letter (AA) should stop better than a lower letter (A). The grades are, better to lower  AA, A, B, C.

Temperature Grade A, B, C. A tire's ability to perform in hot conditions such as the high temperatures caused by driving a long distance in hot weather. This can lead to blowouts and tread separation. From highest to lowest, a tire's resistance to heat is graded as “A”, “B”, or “C”.
