(starting at the end of the year)

1/6/2016 2015 ends with a surge in sales and the best month ever with a new record of 56,274 cars sold, an increase of 6,351 13% over the previous best of 53,070 September 2015.

For the record.... Subaru sold
48,928 cars in 1976, 183,242 in 1986, sales dropped in the early 1990s but recovered to 120,748 cars in 1996, they sold 200,703 in 2006, and now they're poised to break 600,000 in 2016

December sales by model

#1 Forester- 16,797 Dec 2015 compared to 15,163 12/14.
#2 Outback- 16,067 Dec 2015 compared to 14,772 12/14
#3 Crosstrek- 8,090 Dec 2015 compared to 5,482 12/14
#4 Impreza- 6,059 Dec 2015 compared to 5,808 12/14
#5 Legacy- 5,759 Dec 2015 compared to 5,457 12/14
#6 WRX/STI- 3,089 Dec 2015 compared to 2,812 12/14
#7 BRZ- 412 Dec 2015 compared to 416 12/14

2015 total sales 582,675. Thats an increase of 68,982 or 13% over 2014 total sales 513,693
It was a great year to be Subaru.  Subaru's share of the total U.S market is now around 3.3%
Sales of all models is up up up except the rear wheel drive Scion FRS/Subaru BRZ clone.
60% of sales are to buyers new to Subaru! Marketing love love love and dogs dogs dogs works. And all the positive reviews... some days it seems Subaru can do no wrong.
Now Subaru has to keep these new buyers from drifting to yet another brand when it again comes time for a new car.
Subaru can help create loyalty
> the first two oil changes and one tire rotation and 1 new cabin air filter should be included free with every purchase.
> Subarus come with a 3 year/36,000 mile roadside warranty, and that service should be extended to cover any other Subarus in the owner's name.
> Subaru GTP guaranteed trade program is offered on cars up to 6 years from date of sale, and they could extend that to 8 years to keep older car owners from trying another brand
> loyalty incentives to repeat buyers that can be as simple as a Subaru jacket or something similar, a free 2 year maintenance/oil change program, perhaps a small price or interest rate discount.
Crosstreks continue to be the hard to find, an overnight success 3 years after its 2013 model introduction. The new 2016 model's 7" upgraded audio and blind spot detection has of course been getting people to take a 2nd look. The base 2.0i and Premium model 6.2" audio system is disappointing.
The top selling 2016 Forester's upgraded 7" audio system on all except 2.5i base model, has helped the Forester compete with the #2 selling 2016 Outback's blind spot detection.
The Forester retains the classic straight-forward utility, functionality and safety of the Subarus that helped establish the company's current reputation. It may be square but it works!
Outback with current safety technology (seat cushion airbags, upgraded eyesight, blind spot detection) and a comfortable, quiet ride is now a car people aspire to.
The 2016 WRX and STI are, as always, strong cult favorites, despite missing a 5 door hatchback version since the 2014 model. The WRX CVT is a good compromise for the performance buyer who doesn't want to shift. While the paddle shifters work, they should be made a little more responsive, with a crisper shift response.
The Impreza, first offered in 1993, still does well even with competition from its higher sitting Impreza Crosstrek sibling ... or perhaps its because of the Crosstrek. Can we say that those early Impreza hatchbacks were the first mini-utes?
The BRZ is a beautiful car, especially the Premium model which has clean, classic lines without the fussy rear spoiler on the Limited. But it's a rear wheel drive car in an all-wheel-drive world and sales continue to drop year after year from the high of 8587 cars sold its first full year (2013 model). I wonder how long Subaru will continue to make it (the answer is.. as long as Toyota wants to buy and market them as Scion FRSs)

2015 total sales by model

11/22 Subaru to start monitoring sales made outside a 200 mile radius from a dealer's location.
First announced late last month (October) Subaru will monitor out of market sales, ie sales made more than 200 miles from a dealership. More details will be released on how this will work, but the goal seems to be to protect dealers from aggressive regional and national lowball pricing that is so simple to do with the ever increasing marketing use of the internet.
Where the internet was once a tool for research and gathering information, it is now another marketing tool and this is Subaru's attempt to control the damage a few dealers can do to prices nationally.
Part of the problem is how do you stop people from shopping dealers everywhere for a price? Subaru itself encourages wide spread shopping with its unrestricted 'get a quote' shopping/price tool that allows the customer to request prices from any dealer simply by putting in a zip code (subaru.com > shopping tools > request a quote) and saying "Don’t worry. This isn’t committing to anything. We simply want to get you the most precise cost."
The dealer getting the quote request has no way of knowing if the person is really local to them or not, and is supposed to respond within a reasonable amount of time (Subaru also monitors dealer response times). Most dealers will send a price.
So if the customer then responds to a dealers quote, is the dealer now obligated to turn the customer down because they're outside the 200 mile zone?
I am completely in favor of buying locally and when contacted by out of state buyers will always help with model and price selection and the names or their local dealers.
More details will be announced.

11/18 Share the Love v. 8
from November 19, 2015 - January 2, 2016 Subaru will donate $250 for each car purchased to the buyer's choice of charities. There are 5 charities to choose from: this year the choices are ASPCA, National Parks Foundation, Meals On Wheels, Make-a-Wish, and the 5th charity will be a local organization chosen by the dealership.
Up to $15,000,000 will be donated. When a buyer doesn't select a charity, the funds are distributed equally. Dealers will have fliers and other handouts, and the charity can be selected at the dealer at time of purchase, or later at home (the VIN will be needed).

11/3/15 October 2015 sales total 51,269, the 2nd highest monthly sales total, right behind #1 September 2015's 53,070

October 2014 was 43,012, so 2015 was a 20% increase over 2014.
YTD 480,331, a 15% increase over 2014 YTD 418,497.
Subaru will break 500,000 by mid-November.
October 2015- 4th month in a row over 50,000 cars, 47th month of increases.
Share the Love #8 runs 11/23/15-1/2/16, Subaru will donate 4250 for each car sold charity.
2016 Crosstreks and BRZs starting to arrive. The Limited production STI and BRZ hyperblue models available but selling out quickly.
The 2016 Impreza is now starting to arrive so all 16s are now available, as are all 2016 model brochures
October 2015 sales
Forester and Outback are both up 17% from October 2014. They are clearly what the public thinks about when considering a Subaru. The Crosstrek is doing very well, and the 2016 model upgrades (quieter ride, blind spot detection) will certainly help volume. The Crosstrek still lacks a power driver's seat, and that does hold back sales, because as Crosstrek prices approach and pass the $30,000 mark, a power driver's seat is expected.
The Legacy is holding on to decent sales volume but its still doesn't get the attention it deserves. Perhaps its time for Subaru to give in and to advertise an actual customer rebate.  Subaru relies on Subaru's overall rising tide of popularity to increase sales on all models, with a dealer incentive here and there on leases to motivate sales. And for the most part this "we don't need rebates or 0%" marketing strategy has worked, but perhaps an customer rebate would get some cost conscious sedan shoppers to consider the Legacy.
And if it wasn't for the Series.HyperBlue BRZ, no one would be talking about the BRZ this year, not until it gets an engine.

October 14,729, which is 2105 cars, or a 17%  increase over 12,624 sold 10/14
Forester 15,172, which is 2201 cars, or a 17% increase over 12,971 sold 10/14
Crosstrek 7,313, which is 1941, or a 36% increase over 5372 sold 10/14
Impreza 5,340, which is 2186, or a 69% increase over 3154 sold 10/14
Legacy 5,688, which is 674 car less, or a 11% drop, from the 6362 sold 10/14
WRX, STI 3013, with is 928 cars, or a 45% increase, over 2085 sold 10/14

8/12 2016 Outback and Legacy brochures now available at dealer

8/10 2016 Outback and Legacy arriving on lots, but can't be delivered due to the Stop Sale recall. See below.

8/7 recall on the last 2015 and first 2016 Outbacks and Legacys built,  produced in July
2015 and 2016 Outback built July 3-25, 2015
2015 and 2016 Legacy built July 3-27, 2015

Due to a production problem on some (not all)  Outbacks and Legacys made in July, those vehicles cannot be delivered to owners. Its a Stop Sale recall which means affected cars cannot be sold.  It was a short three week period that these were made, but it means thats if you have a 2016 on order, it might have arrived but is sitting at the lot because it can't be delivered until the recall is performed.
Or it means that the ETA delivery date of the new car will be delayed and pushed back.
Please be patient.  Subaru will get replacement parts out as quickly as they can, and its better they fix them first before owners take possession.
"During the manufacturing process of the propeller shaft that connects to the vehicle's transmission, the seal cap and seal located inside the propeller shaft yoke may have been deformed. As a result, the seal may leak transmission fluid. If the transmission fluid leaks onto an exhaust pipe, there is a possible risk of fire. The propeller shaft will be replaced...
Parts will start to be distributed in mid August but initial supply will be limited..."
Cars already purchased, on the road and being driven will recieve parts first.

8/3 July 2015 sales, its a new sales record
Another record setting month with a total of 50,517 cars sold. That is Subaru's highest total ever for a single month by 246 cars. The previous record was 50,246 in August 2014
For July 2015
Total 50517 for July 15, which is 4803 cars over 45714 cars July 2014, and 246 cars over the previous all time record of 50,246 set last August 2014.
Subaru is on a roll, and a rising tide floats all boats. 44th month of increased sales, and 17th month in a row with sales over 40,000.

Outback 10,863 July 15, down 905 from 11768 July 14. the 2016 Outbacks havent starting arriving yet and the supply of 15s is tight, and that holds back sales. The 16s should be arriving soon.
Forester 15,811 July 15, up 1287 over 145624 July 14. The 0% financing combined with low closeout prices on the 15s helped sales. The upgraded 16s are arriving now with the new audio systems. Still, its disappointing the 16s didn't get a height adjustable front passenger seat or CVT paddle shifters.
Crosstrek 8575 for July 15, up 1972 over 6603 July 14. The Crosstrek has 'arrived', after 3 years it's an overnight success. Hopefully the 16s due later this year will get the much needed power seat and blind spot detection
Impreza 6527 for July 15, up 1159 from 5368 July 14.
Legacy 4500 for July 15, down 179 from 4679 July 14. The 2016s are expected this month
WRX, STI 3716 for July 15, up 1711 from 2005 July 14. The 16s are arriving and the upgraded audio systems are a huge improvement, especially the 7" navigation system. While subaru's technology features have never been state of the art, the systems in the 16s WRX and STI and a massive improvement over the 14s. The Hyper Blue STI is due in October.
BRZ 525 for July 15, down 199 from July 14. Reportedly the 2017 or a mid-year 2016.5 BRZ will get a new motor, or if not a new motor, a farewell party. In the meantime, the Hyper Blue 2016 BRZ is expected in October.

7/20  BRZ runs short of power. ie yes its very pretty, it even handles well, but it needs a motor upgrade. Or make it all wheel drive (that's a fantasy we'll never see)
.
from autoguide.com "Even the president of Subaru admits the BRZ needs a little more power.
Speaking to Autoline TV, president and COO Subaru of America, Tom Doll, shared his thoughts on the Subaru BRZ sports car and what may lie in its future.
“There’s a place for the BRZ in our product lineup,” said Doll. “We may have to do some things to it to enhance the driving performance a little more; take it up a little bit. Because I think that’s one of the learnings we’ve seen out of that vehicle, if it had a little bit more performance to it, it could really take up the sales level even more.” Doll admits that the future of the BRZ and a second generation of the car depends on Subaru’s relationship with Toyota. The bigger question is what the Japanese automaker defines as “performance,” whether that’s horsepower under the hood of the car, or suspension enhancements that further improve the handling of the Subaru BRZ. If it’s the latter, enthusiasts might be disappointed to see the Subaru BRZ STI come to U.S., as it packs plenty of STI products, none of which improve engine performance." the original article
Note: In April, 2015 it was reported on Automotive News that Subaru U.S. spokesman Michael McHale said that an STI version of the BRZ is coming to the States in “a couple years.” The car may not be billed as a standard STI model according to McHale, who says it might be a “tuned by STI” edition.

7/19  oil consumption class-action lawsuit
from ConsumerAffairs.com

"A class action lawsuit claims that certain Subaru Forester, Legacy, Outback, Impreza and Crosstek vehicles made since 2011 have defective piston rings which cause the cars to burn oil, possibly causing engine failure.

"This design defect may be denied warranty coverage by the manufacturer and result in some owners having to pay for costly repairs to the engine," said the Haverford, Pa., law firm Chimicles & Tikellis, in a prepared statement. "Subaru may even relay to customers that the excessive oil consumption is considered normal."
This might sound familiar to Robert of Laramie, Wyo., who told ConsumerAffairs he can't wait to become a former Subaru owner.
"Soon I will be rid of this 2012 Subaru Forester and will never buy a Subaru again. The oil consumption has been a quart per 1,000 miles. The manual said that this is normal," Robert said in a recent review. "The dealerships have been unconcerned and unwilling to try to stop the consumption 'as it is normal.'"
Nothing normal
There's nothing normal about that kind of oil consumption, Robert said.
"The car has 26,000 miles and 26 quarts of synthetic oil have been poured in it between the recommended oil changes. ... I have owned very many other models of cars and trucks (probably over 50) and never had one that consistently used over a quart between changes even though some had over 200,000 miles on them. This poorly designed and supported car is unacceptable. Subaru got me once never again!"
aye of Big Canoe, Ga., also finds herself buying a lot of oil.
"I purchased my 2013 Subaru Outback February 2013. I have servicing done regularly. However, from the very start, my oil light comes on between 2500 to 3000 miles after an oil change. I was told by the dealership that this is normal for these cars because they do not have as much oil as other cars."
Like others we've heard form, Faye finds that explanation unacceptable.
"I had a Toyota Highlander for ten years, 210,000 miles on it and never had any problem like this. Unfortunately, it was totaled by a falling tree, and everyone encouraged me to get a Subaru. Nice car, but not truly reliable."
Models named
The models named in the suit are:
2011-2014 Subaru Forester 2.5L, 2013 Legacy 2.5L, 2013 Outback 2.5L, 2012-2013 Impreza 2.0L, 2013 XV Crosstek 2.0L
ConsumerAffairs readers have had similar problems with models not covered by the lawsuit.
"Our 2010 Outback failed on a road trip in a cloud of smoke a few days and less than 1,000 miles after an oil change and 23-pt. inspection at the selling dealership. We're told the engine block would need replacement -- $5.200 -- and a $1,300 teardown to see what other engine parts would need replacement," said Kames of Milwaukee. "The Outback used immense quantities of oil; we began changing every 1,500-2000 miles and always carried oil because the light went on frequently. Dealers that checked said no biggie." the original article

June sales total 44,335, a 7.2% increase over 4136 June 2015
Dealers started the month with 31,000 cars, and with 44,355 being sold, that means many cars were sold before they arrived at dealers.
Forester continues as the top seller with 14,058.  The new, long-needed infotainment upgrades coming on the 2016s next month will increase sales. And for those that don't mind the 2015's dated audio, bluetooth, and small back-up camera screen, 0% financing will help move the 2015s. So the 2015 Forester should have a strong July.
#2 volume Outback has serious supply issues, and is selling out with almost no availability on the ground. 10,912 were sold in June, down 5% from June 14.
Crosstrek is rapidly climbing the sales ladder, with a 7057 for the month, a 30% increase over last June. The success of the Crosstrek, first introduced in 2012 and generally unacknowledged to be a variant of the Impreza 5 door (first introduced in 1993),  shows that Subaru buyers prefer high-sitting hatchback wagons and crossovers like the Forester, Outback and Crosstrek.  The first Outback with a raised suspension was a version of the 1996 Legacy wagon and a run-away success that basically saved Subaru. The first Crosstrek was a 2012 Impreza with raised suspension and its easily out-performing Legacy and Impreza.
The big gainer for the month is Legacy with 4526 sold, a 45% increase over June 2014. Maybe if they offered a raised suspension, high sitting Legacy sedan, we'd see more volume. Oh wait.... Subaru already did that. They offered an Outback sedan (aka SUS), which was a raised suspension Legacy sedan, from the 1997 though 2007 model years. It wasn't a big seller, it never foiund a stable market, but has its fans. Expect bloggers to start writing about it as another forgotten curiosity from the back of the Subaru closet like they do with the SVX, XT6, Brat, Baja etc

Subaru's month to month sales have increased for 43 months in row, with the last 16 months over 40,000.
YTD, half-way through the year, the total is 272,428, a 14.5% increase over 238,000 YTD 2014, with the busy fall and cold weather season approaching
June totals
Forester 14,058, 741 cars or 6% over 13317 June 2014
Outback 10,912, 613 cars or 5% lower than 11,525 June 2014
Crosstrek 7057, 1623 cars or 30% over 5434 June 2014
Impreza 5066, 211 or 4% less than 5277 June 2014
Legacy 4526, 1395 or 45% more than 3131 June 2014
WRX/STI 2166, 101 cars or 5% more than 2065 June 2014
BRZ 550, 7 cars or 1% drop from 557 June 2014

7/1/15 Oil consumption issues take front and center stage with Consumer Reports reporting on the problem.
Manufacturers mentioned in the article include Audi, Subaru, Honda, Toyota, Volvo, Porsche Mercedes, Chevy

Here's the first paragraph of the article from Consumer Reports. To read the full article buy the CR August 2015 issue at newstands or read the complete article online.

"Cars under warranty shouldn’t burn oil. And most don’t.
But Consumer Reports’ 2014 Annual Auto Survey found that several auto manufacturers are building engines—available in a number of widely sold models—that require frequently topping off the oil reservoir between recommended oil changes. That’s a worry and cost that a new-car owner shouldn’t have.
The oil-change industry has long prescribed changing your oil every 3,000 miles. In recent years, most automakers have stretched that to 7,500 or even 10,000 miles because refinements in engine manufacturing and oil technology purportedly allow engine oil to last longer.
For some automakers, though, that appears to be an optimistic claim. In our survey of owners of about 1 million vehicles stretching back 10 years, we found that for certain models, significant numbers of consumers have to add a quart of oil to their engines as frequently as every month.
It’s normal for cars to burn a little oil as they age toward 100,000 miles and beyond. But Consumer Reports believes that for an almost new car to burn that excessive amount of oil is unacceptable...."
The article continues on and includes Consumer Reports list of the "The thirsty 30"
Other reviews in the August issue include an assortment - smartwatches, refrigerators, dishwashers, kitchen countertops, the use and overuse of antibiotics, the Ford F150 and Chevy Colorado trucks, Mustang and Challenger muscle cars etc.

Subaru responds to customer concerns  "....The Subaru owner's manual includes a normal consumption example of 1 qt per 1,200 miles, and most owners will experience consumption at lower rates with normal driving. However, if an owner feels they are using more oil than they should be, retailers will assess the situation on a case-by-case basis and can perform a consumption test to determine what actions should be taken. Different drivers in the same car may experience different results. However, Subaru will continue to offer assistance to customers who feel they are experiencing above-expectation consumption."

And few brief comments from me. For a long time Subaru had head gasket issues. The solution was to replace the gaskets, try to let the engine warm up and cool down a bit, and mostly hope it doesn't ever happen again during the car's life. And except for that the cars mostly ran and ran and ran. Of course some potential buyers were scared off, but not many. And whatever car they did buy also had issues, just different ones.

Now with this oil consumption,  it can be very annoying- its not just one time during a car's life, its every 1000-1500 miles, and that's annoying.  Consumer Reports is right, cars normally use oil but not this much.  I'm told (and I am not a mechanic, and this isn't the final answer) that this disappearing oil is related to improving fuel economy via low friction engines, smaller piston rings, and the use of thin 0w-20 synthetic oil instead of the old heavier 5w-30 conventional oil. For now the answer is to watch the oil- open the hood and check the dipstick, carry and stay in touch with the service people at your local dealer.

This is from automotivenews.com
"Newer models from Audi, BMW and Subaru are burning a lot of oil between routine oil changes, according to a consumer survey from Consumer Reports.
The magazine’s 2014 Annual Auto Survey found that a significant number of consumers with vehicles from the 2010 to 2014 model years have to add a quart of oil to their engines as frequently as every month.
The worst offenders:
• Audi’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and 3.0-liter V-6.
• BMW’s 4.8-liter V-8 and twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8.
• Subaru’s 3.6-liter six-cylinder and 2.0- and 2.5-liter four-cylinders.
Some of the models with these engines include Audi’s A3, A4, A5, A6 and Q5; BMW’s 5, 6 and 7 series and X5; and Subaru’s Outback, Legacy, Forester and Impreza.
While the magazine said it didn’t find a direct connection between increased oil consumption and other engine problems, it found that excessive oil burning early in a vehicle’s life leads to increased oil consumption over time.
The real issue: Cost
The real issue for consumers with oil-guzzling engines is cost. Consumer Reports cites increased requirement for synthetic oil, which can cost up to $9 per quart, and more frequent routine oil changes as expenses of excessive oil consumption.
Owners of BMW 5-series cars equipped with V-8 engines were 27 times as likely to have excessive oil consumption as owners of an average vehicle in the survey.
BMW attributes oil top-up frequency to the luxury vehicles’ long intervals between oil changes -- 10,000 miles -- and BMW engines may consume up to 1 quart of engine oil per 750 miles under certain driving conditions
The traditional oil-change frequency recommendation is every 3,000 miles, but fine-tuning in engine manufacturing and oil technology has led some automakers to extend that to 7,500-10,000 miles.
“Oil consumption is normal on all engines as it is necessary to properly lubricate the cylinder walls, pistons, piston rings, valves and turbochargers,” BMW spokesman Hector Arellano-Belloc wrote in an email.
Lawsuits
Subaru spokesman Michael McHale said the automaker’s internal data show that “much less than 1 percent” of its vehicles are criticized by customers for excessive oil consumption, but the automaker is in the midst of a class-action lawsuit regarding the issue.
The class-action alleges that Subaru models equipped with the 2.0- and 2.5-liter engines may contain defective piston rings in the engine, which causes excessive oil consumption.
“Different drivers in the same car may experience different driving results,” McHale said. “Oil consumption is an inherent feature of all internal combustion engines and the rate of consumption can be affected by such factors as transmission type, driving style, terrain and temperature.”
He said the Subaru owner’s manual indicates a normal consumption example of 1 quart per 1,200 miles.
Another class-action lawsuit filed by consumers alleged that Audi’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines contained a defect that caused them to consume excessive amounts of oil. A settlement was reached last month.
Audi was not required to admit liability or wrongdoing in the settlement, but the automaker will have to extend warranties on affected vehicles to 80,000 miles. Affected vehicles are eligible for engine adjustments to control oil consumption under the settlement, and Audi is expected to reimburse the plaintiffs for service adjustments performed on the affected vehicles before the settlement.
“We believe many of the Audi complaints stem from the cars included under the Oil Consumption Class Action settlement,” Audi spokesman Brad Stertz wrote in an email. “For other models listed by Consumer Reports, our internal information isn’t indicating any increase in customer complaints.”

6/13/15 a well written, thorough article about Subaru's history - where is Subaru today, how did yesterday turn into today. and where will they be tomorrow.
Subaru is on a roll. They're selling more cars than ever, giving proof to old fable that the race isn't always won by the fleet, that the turtle can win.
Supply of some models is very tight - Outback, Limited, Crosstrek and WRX/STI - and many are sold before they are delivered. People order and wait for their car.
As Subaru owners know, and the article below discusses, Subaru moves slowly. They went years without bluetooth or USB ports, model redesigns were more evolutionary upgrades than new models. When they did come out with all new models- recently the Baja and Tribeca - sales were slow and production faded. The newest member of the family, the BRZ, completely bucks Subaru's all-wheel-drive heritage, but it was co-developed with Toyota and is mostly sold as a Scion anyway.
Some 2015s got new quieter rides (not something Subaru is known for), audio screens got usable rear view camera screens and cell phone bluetooth that downloads phonebooks. 2016 models are getting Subaru new Starlink telematics (think Onstar). But that's not the whole story- Subaru plays to its fans by focusing on safety, solid structure, usability, and dependability. Decent fuel economy, reasonable pricing, adjustable seats... family practical cars are what Subaru buyers want. Sure there's room for change and improvement, there always is, but ask someone who has a Subaru what they'd change and it would mostly all be minor. And yes they'd buy it again, and again.
Subaru's recent growth is bringing in all new owners. Subarus are new to these buyers, they're not buying the same brand of car they had before, and the trick will be keeping them happy through their ownership period  (read; how do they like the service dept) while creating brand loyalty, and then having something for them to buy next time they need a new car. Since these new owners were willing to try a new brand this time, what's to stop them from trying a new brand next time... will they ride the turtle.

"Will fast-growing Subaru decide to stay small"
"The tornado tore through Lafayette, Ind., at 3 p.m. on Nov. 17, 2013, a Sunday.
Most of the 4,000 workers at the local Subaru factory—the only such facility outside Japan—were between shifts when the twister slammed into the building at almost 140 miles per hour. It tore off a section of roof, flung a three-ton air-conditioning unit like an empty beer can, and toppled a concrete wall onto the assembly line.
“Monday was a day off. Tuesday morning, we were open at 6 a.m.” says Tom Easterday, the executive vice president who runs the factory. The roof was a patchwork of temporary panels, the floor was covered in a few inches of rainwater, and the plant was cold. But shutting down production wasn’t an option. Subaru had enough inventory in the U.S. to last about 11 days, an impossibly slim buffer in an industry famous for revving supply far beyond demand. The 2014 Outback that wound up under the concrete wall was driven off the line, retouched, and sold.

... In late 2006, Doll hired a new creative agency, Minneapolis-based Carmichael Lynch, a unit of Interpublic Group. The first change was simple: The tag line—"It's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru"—was prefaced by "Love." A slate of emotionally charged ads followed. Kids and dogs were everywhere. The only features the company lingered on were safety-related. Instead of buying a Super Bowl slot, the company sponsored Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl. "Before 2008, you kind of knew about Subaru or you didn't," says marketing chief Alan Bethke. "That all changed with the 'Love' campaign."
Volume, however, has its drawbacks. If a company outruns demand, a string of reactions unfolds that ends in a very dented reputation among consumers. First, profit gets pinched, as prices are cut and incentives are added to move the excess metal. Friction builds between dealers and the manufacturer over whose margin should be sacrificed. Meanwhile, the discounting weighs on resale values, which can turn off prospective buyers.
.... Last year, Subaru made a profit of nine cents on every dollar of sales, some $2.4 billion in net income. That’s nine cents free and clear—after all of the workers had been paid and the fancy crash-avoidance technology had been tested and the checks had gone out to charities. No other automaker hit that threshold—not Toyota (8 percent), not BMW (7.2 percent), and certainly not Ford (2.2 percent).
After that kind of result, most executives would take a victory lap—bankroll a reckless race car or at least splurge on a famous headliner to make an appearance at one of the auto shows. Doll, however, is hunkered down near a hotel Starbucks, carefully making last-minute edits to his annual address to dealers. When asked about his remarkable success of late, he shrugs, cracks a wry grin, and offers the koan of a car guy who has seen both boom and bust: “Profit in this business is all temporary; eventually it just has to be redeployed.”

6/12/15  Love is Worth Waiting For... 2016 Outback and Legacy factory orders.
The 2015s are in short supply, 2016s will continue to sell well once they start arriving and will be hard to get, so if you want one, order it now ...
Love is Worth Waiting For.

6/10 2016 Foresters- scant info today, more expected soon.
We're all still waiting on specs and details, but I understand the only changes are the upgraded 6.2" and 7' audio infotainment systems.
Eyesight remains v2, there's no Blind Spot or Rear crosstraffic alert offered, and the ride and noise isn't improved.
Of course, the better audio systems will help with phone functions, and the bigger LCD screens with certainly help the rear view back-up camera display.
But there's no height adjustable front passenger seat, the 2.5s still have a generic low mode instead of paddle shifters,  the Touring doesn't get memory seats....
Yes the top models will get Subaru Starlink Safety Plus and Security Plus safety and convenience connectivity.
There are two Starlink packages
#1 Safety Plus Package with SOS emergency accident assistance, enhanced roadside assistance, automatic collision notification, maintenance nofiication, and diagnostic alerts-  1 year free, 2 years $99,  3 years $149
#2 Safety Plus and Security plus add stolen vehicle recovery, alarm notifications, remote lock/unlock, remote horn/lights function, remote vehicle finder-  1 year $49, 2 years $149, 3 years $249

6/6 Thieves can extend the range of a car's keyless access search system to unlock the car.
The keyless access system on cars works when the key fob is close to the car, within a few feet, in your pocket or purse. The car's search function only looks a few feet and won't find a key fob further away, in your house for example.
But crooks have found a way to hack the system... of course.
This isn't your typical smash-and-grab, the thief needs to have an 'amplifying device' that extends the range of a car's search function, allowing it to find a key that is normally way too far away to work, like in your house for example.
When it finds the key, the doors can be opened. Remember, this is only cars with keyless access and pushbutton start. Car companies are working to have the car recognize the distance of the key, so it will only find the key and only work if the key is very close by.
The solution is Subaru needs to put an 'off' button on the key. Not only will this eliminate this new (but unlikely) theft risk, but with an 'off' button, the key can also be locked in the car when you're swimming or hiking etc and don't want to carry a key.
While I don't think this is a widespread problem at alll, or even anything to worry about, if you have keyless entry and are concerned, the quick fix-it-now solution is to get a metal thermos, or a small cardboard box lined with foil, and drop your keys in it when you get home.
That way you'll also know where to find the keys in the morning.
Here's the article from Q13 Fox news, Seattle
"Experts are issuing a warning to drivers who have cars with keyless entry system. They say you may want to change where you keep your electronic fobs, so thieves don’t use the technology against you.
Jasmine Vandelac has watched her surveillance video several times, but she still doesn’t understand how thieves were able to get into the cars on her driveway in just seconds.
“We know we locked the doors. We didn`t see them using any kind of device to open it through the window,” she says. “Just boom, they opened the doors.”
She’s glad the thieves didn’t break her windows, but she still wants to know how they broke in. The answer could be her electronic key fob.
“What we’re finding is that the key fobs we have for our cars send off a radio signal,” says AAA spokeswoman Jennifer Cook. “Thieves have found a way to extend that radio signal that goes between your key fob and your car.”
So even if your fob was inside your house, an extender or amplifier would make your car think it was close by. The doors would unlock.
“You used to have a wire, you slid down the window when it was mechanical,” says car prowl victim Tom Dahl. “Now it`s electronic.”
“If this technology becomes easily available to criminals you’re going to see it spread,” says Lars Carlson, another victim. “At this point, there’s not a whole lot we can do to protect ourselves.”
But experts say you can protect yourself by changing where you keep your keys. “When you’re storing your key fob at home, put it into a metal box,” says Cook. “Don’t put it in the freezer or the microwave where it can be ruined, but some type of metal box. That way it will stop the signal from being extended.” the original article

6/4/15 2016 Outback and 2016 Legacy orders now available

6/4/15 2016 WRX, STI, Outback and Legacy finance rates announced

This early rates announcement means that Subaru doesn't expect any (or many)  left-over 2015 models to be available when the 16s are here, so Subaru is encouraging 16 orders. There wont be any year end clearance on these models. 2016 Forester information is still expected mid June
.

Outback 1.90% 24-36-48 mos, 2.90%x 60-63-72 months
Legacy
1.90% 24-36-48 mos, 2.90%x 60-63-72 months
WRX, STI 2.90%x 24-36-48-60 months

15 pages, with one fold out.  Order your WRX or STI now. The 16s have the 6.2" audio/infotainment which is a big improvement over the 2015 and prior systems, or upgrade to the much better 7" audio/infotainment/navigation. The STI Limited comes standard with the 7" system.

6/2/15 June interest rates announced thought June 30

2015 model rates all remain the same as May.
There are some good lease programs on Outback, Legacy and Impreza, and especially on the 2015 Foresters.
Subaru has said they will announce 2016 Outback, Legacy and WRX/STI interest rates on June 4th even though the cars aren't expected this month, so its very early. Subaru wants to encourage factory orders. WRX/STI can be ordered now, and Outback/Legacy orders can be placed on June 4th
WRX STI should be here in July, Outback/Legacy in August

6/2/15 May sales total 49, 651, which is 5391 or 12% over 44170 May 2014
This is the 3rd best month in Subaru's history.
The amazing part is that dealers sold 49651 cars but started the month with only 35000 cars in inventory. This means cars were sold before they arrived, it means they were delivered to the dealer, PDI'd by the service department, and picked up by the new owner within days. This is a very fast inventory turn, and means there is still little inventory on lots, especially of the desirable 2015 Outback, Legacy, and Crosstrek models. Dealers do have a decent supply of Foresters.
YTD the total is 228,083 cars, 16% or 31441 more cars than 196,642 cars YTD 2014

May sales by model
All models were up for the month except for the WRX/STI which was only down 62 cars from May 2014, and the low demand BRZ which is more of a summer car.
The volume leader continues to be the Forester with 15157 cars. May was the Forester's best month ever as production meets demand.
The Crosstrek total was 7876, the best month yet for the 3 year old model. The Crosstrek will continue to outsell its Impreza siblings.
Outback 12,384 May 2015, which is 743 cars or 6% more than 11641 May 2014
Forester 15,157 May 2015, which is 1011 cars or 7% over 214146 May 2014
Crosstrek 7876 May 2015, which is 2098 or 36% more than 5778 May 2014
Legacy 5,000 May 2015, which is 1947 or 64% over 3053 May 2014
Impreza 5,643 May 2015, which is 16 cars less that 5659 May 2014
WRX, STI 2,895 May 2015, which is 62 cars or 2% less than 2957 May 2014
BRZ 606 May 2015, which is 246 cars or 29% less than 852 May 2014

5/29 Subaru renews lease at their facility at the Port of Vancouver Wa
Subaru renewed its lease for app 40 acres at the Port of Vancouver through August 31, 2030, with two 5 year optional extensions.  Around 150 people work at the facility and in 2014 Subaru moved 81,718 cars though it. Outback and Legacy for NW dealers arrive by rail from Lafayette, Indiana, but most of the cars arrive by ship from Japan.

5/28/15 Takata airbag recall- 2004 and 2005 Impreza, WRX, and STI

This new recall, #WQR-53 expands previous recall WQP-51 which recalled the Takata made passenger airbag inflators in cars used in high humidity areas only.
This recall now includes all 2004/2005 Imprezas, WRXs and STIs regardless of location. Owner notification will begin in 60 days. Owners should make sure Subaru has their current contact informatio
n.

5/24 Its hard to make a great car better, but here's my 2016 Outback and Legacy wish list
Hopefully the 2016 Outback and Legacy will have
Rain sensing front wipers
Eyesight standard on all Limiteds
Passenger seat needs a  height adjustment
Limited model rear seat fan should have a fan speed adjustment
5 or 6 speed front wiper intermittent speeds- currently only 4 speeds.
Electric parking hill holder function should also set the parking brake when the car is put in park
Blind spot and rear cross traffic alert should be standard on all Premiums. Currently standard on Limiteds.
Climate control should have easier to read buttons and especially larger clock and outside temperature numbers
All models should have a lock/unlock Beep with on/off control. Currently only the Limited beeps when un/locked
The 3 year/36,000 mile warranty includes Roadside Assistance program which should include any Subaru the new owner has!
Easier to set power gate height control on the Outback. It needs a knob or dial with low, medium, medium high, and high gate height settings. Plus add a manual open/close mode.
Drop the 6.2" radio completely, and make the 7" system standard on all models. Either that, or really improve the 6.2' audio system. The 7" system is significantly better than the 6.2"
More small accessories are needed to personalize a car: bring back optional under-car puddle lights, interior ambient, cupholder, and dash lights, factory front and rear bumper corner anti-scuff moldings, front hood protector etc etc
Keyless access fobs should each be a different color to help owners identify their key, and the key fobs need a simple Off/disable setting to lock it in a car when swimming etc instead of wrapping it in tin foil, or the awkward pin code access system.

Stay tuned for more details to trickle out....

5/1/15 April sales total is 47,241 cars, an 18% increase, or 7,158 cars, over the 40,083 sold April 2014
This is the 14th month of sales over 40,000. What was once amazing is now expected. 145 dealers (23% of the total) sold more than 100 cars for the month.
April 2015 YTD is 178,522, up 26% or 26,051 cars more than April 2014 YTD 152,471.
Forester is the volume leader for the month, closely followed by Outback. If the supply of Outbacks was better, the numbers would be reversed, with Outback the volume leader. Crosstrek continues to outsell all the Impreza sedan and hatchback models combined. Maybe Subaru will cut back on the confusing and production restrictive number of Impreza 2016 models/packages.
April sales by model
Outback 12,534 for the month, 18% or 1871 more than 10,663 April 2014
Forester 13,997 for the month, 21% or 2430 more than 11,547 April 2014
Legacy 5,276 for the month,  69% or 2,150 more than 3,126 April 2014
Crosstrek 6,936 for the month,  22% or 1,258 more than 5,678 April 2014
WRX, STI 2,713 for the month, up 1%, or 15 cars, more than 2698 April 2014
Impreza 5,311, or down 2%, or 133 cars, less than 5,444 April 2014
BRZ 494 for the month, down 40%, or 326 cars, from 820 sold April 2014

4/6 2015 New York Auto Show, April 3-12. autoshowny.com
Subaru showed off the coming Starlink app upgrade that includes an airbag deployment/collision notification, roadside assistance, remote lock/unlock, stolen vehicle recovery, lost gps assistance. This is similar to GMs Onstar that was available on early 3.0L Outback LL Bean and VDC in the early 2000s, back when GM owned a piece of Subaru (since sold to Toyota). The upgraded Starlink app will be on a 2016 Forester, Legacy and Outback, probably top of the line models. It will be another good safety feature, depending on price and monthly subscription rate.
STI BRZ- a performance modified BRZ concept is at the auto show. Its a concept only, designed to create buzz and to stir the rumor mill, and while Subaru says there's no STI or turbo BRZ coming to the US,  this will bring much needed attention to Subaru's rear wheel drive BRZ. Not sure it will do much for actual sales but at least people will be talking about the BRZ, which is definitely Subarus prettiest car - everyone looks good in a BRZ. But for those hoping for an all wheel drive version, or more power, it doesnt seem to be coming, so check out the new 2015 all wheel drive Lexus RC coupe. Though it's larger, almost twice the price, and clearly isn't a BRZ, it is an awd coupe, and since Lexus and Scion are both Toyota off-spring, and the Scion FRS and Subaru BRZ are siblings, its a few degrees of separation but.... oh never mind.
Also at the NY auto show... the new Rallycross STI by Vermont sportscar. Named VT15x, its the 3rd rallycross racer by Vermont Sportscar. Its a 4 door with 580hp that rockets 0-60 in 2 seconds. It will flying at the Rallycross in Ft Lauderdale May 31st, and the XGames in Austin June 5th. It should be a winner.
And we're still waiting for news on the 2016 Forester.

4/3 new event- Subaru Loves the Earth E-Waste Recycling Event

In the Seattle area, Carter Subaru Shoreline, 17225 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline, 98133 is a participating dealer and has 2 big collection boxes

Subaru Western Area Dealers Electronic Waste Recycling Event April 2015

4/2/15 March sales total is 49,111 cars. Thats a new single month record and pushing the magic 50,000 barrier.
It wasn't long ago that Subaru only delivered 100,000 cars in an entire year, so 50,000 in a month... well, that's like Chuck Yeager in the X-1 breaking the Mach 1 sound barrier in 1947.
Idea... maybe when Subaru does achieve that 50,000 car month- they're only 889 cars away, it could be this month -  they let the 50,000th buyer to choose a charity for Subaru to donate a car to?
YTD total is 131,281, a 17% increase over 112,388 YTD 2014. According to Subaru, at this pace, if they can get enough cars, they could be close to the 600,000 car mark for the year.
The total for March 2015 is 49,111, which is 4,632 more than the 44,479 sold March 2014
All models are up, except for Impreza down 9%, and BRZ down 42%.
The Forester is sales leader for the month, even as Subaru slowly starts to release news about the changes on the coming 2016s at the NY Auto Show.
Outback continues to be in short supply or its numbers would be higher
Crosstrek is up 9% for the month to 7162, while its sibling Impreza's sales are down 9% to 5364.
WRX and STI continue their steady numbers. The WRX and STI is the first Subaru many young people aspire to own.
Some 2016 Foresters, and probably Outback and Legacy, all top of the line models, will get Subaru Starlink app's new stolen vehicle recovery, collision/airbag deployment response, remote lock/unlock services etc.
It is expected that all 2016 Forester and WRX/STI will get the new infotainment systems with upgraded audio, bluetooth, and back-up camera, and the optional navigation that are on all new 2015 Outback Legacy, Crosstrek and Impreza.
BRZ numbers are similar to the Tribeca's in the years prior to its demise. Even as Subaru showcases a STI modified BRZ at the NY auto show, without something to generate more interest in the BRZ currently on lots, sales seem on a downward slope.
Outback 12,504, which is 775 or 7% more than 11729 March 14
Forester 14,967, which is 1121 or 8% more than 13846 March 14
Crosstrek 7,162, which is 577 or 9% more than 6585 March 14
Legacy 6,148, which is 2914 or 90% more than 3234 March 14
Impreza 5,364, which is 544 or 9% less than 5908  March 14
WRX, STI 2,471,  which is 290 or13% more than 2181 March 14
BRZ 495, which is 362 or 42% less than 857 March 14

3/30 Subaru responds to Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act which will permit, even encourage, anti-gay discrimination.

Subaru's Outback and Legacy - and some Toyota Camrys - are built in the Subaru Indiana Automotive factory (www.subaru-sia.com) in Lafayette. SIA employs over 3900 people, and plans to expand the factory are in place. That means Subaru has a large, powerful presence in Indiana, and a strong interest in stopping Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). Subaru issued a statement against the bill, and hopefully they join other organizations taking a clear, active stand against it.
Here's Subarus corporate statement, and I'll bet we hear more, and more strongly worded, from Subaru as this continues.
"Regarding news coverage of Subaru’s position on Indiana State Bill 101, SOA has made the following statement:  While we recognize that the voters in each State elect their own legislature to decide that State's laws, we at Subaru do not agree with any legislation that allows for discrimination, or any behavior or act that promotes any form of discrimination. Furthermore, we do not allow discrimination in our own operations, including our operations in the state of Indiana. We will certainly continue to take the issue of non-discrimination into consideration as part of our decision-making processes."

3/6 advertising- 2014 Share the Love Event #7 donation totals announced 2/24/15
There were 5 charities for the 2014 Share The Love Event.
For each new Subaru purchased from 11/20/14 to 1/2/15 Subaru donated $250 to the buyer's choice from a group of 5 charities, 4 chosen by Subaru and 1 charity chosen by the individual local dealer.
The 4 charities selected by Subaru were ASPCA, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Meals On Wheels and the National Park Foundation. These groups were also in last year's Share the Love #6.
The total amount donated by Subaru for the 2014 Share the Love Event #7 is $15million, and the largest recipient were the dealer chosen charities as a group. Subaru didn't provide a list of the local charities selected by delaers or the amounts donated, but as a group, their total was $8,075,643.00. These were the ones selected and promoted by the individual dealers.

Make-A-Wish $2,065,178.54
Meals on Wheels $1,471,883.16
National Park Foundation $1,317,112.64

3/4/15 February sales total 41,358 another record.

41,358 is the best February ever, and 39th consecutive month of increased sales compared to the same month the previous year.
Outback is the top seller for the month, despite ongoing inventory shortages. The Forester is right behind, and the updates expected on the 2016 Forester will help that model's sales. Crosstrek and Impreza both continue to do quite well, especially the Crosstrek. The 1000 Sunrise Yellow Crosstrek Premium Special Editions due soon will bring more attention to the model. WRX and STI would sell more if there was a 5door available. BRZ is the only model down for the month which isn't a surprise considering its a rear-wheel-drive car in an all-wheel-drive world, and its winter! The BRZ is a very pretty car (everyone looks good in it) but with only 334 sold in February and 330 in January, one wonders why Subaru doesn't either just give them all to Scion, or give it some more power (its lacking), or make it a real Subaru family member by ading all wheel drive, which is what it always should have been in the first place- a rear wheel drive Scion and all wheel drive Subaru
..
And once again there were no Tribecas sold and none available.
February 2015 Total 41,358 cars,which is 6499 cars or 18% over February 2914
YTD 82,170 cars, which is 14,261 cars or 21% over 2014's YTD  67,909
February totals
Outback 11,632 cars, 2,665 cars or 30% over February 2014
Forester 11,459 cars, 686 cars or 6% over 2/2014
Crosstrek 6,406 cars, 917 cars or 17% over 5,489 2/2014
Impreza 4,826 cars, 267 cars or 6% over 4,559 2/2014

2/26/15 Subaru comes in #20 on the new JD Power 2015 Vehicle Dependability Study of 2012 models released yesterday February 25th.

JD Powers is a company that specializes in surveys. For this 2015 study, within the past 12 months (ie done in calendar year 2014) they surveyed over 34,000 owners of 2012 models.
Subaru came in at #20 overall in this study, just under the industry average.
What JD Powers found was that technology (audio, bluetooth, navigation) systems were a source of owner frustration. This is really understandable. With technology changing so quickly, keeping all systems connected and working together is a major issue for everyone. For example, new 2014 phones/tablets with all new features that don't sync well with the older audio systems found in 2012 model cars.
And car companies are paying a lot of attention to 'infotainment' systems - infotainment is now the name for audio, bluetooth, navigation systems- because people use it constantly, every time they get in the car they use the radio, phone, or navigation and when it doesn't work people are frustrated, even when the problem is caused by a new device. The typical story is that some years ago, you could buy an optional iPod wired connection in a car. Then Apple brought out the new Nano model with a new plug design that didn't work with the iPod connector and people who had purchased the wired iPod connection were unhappy and called their car dealer.
With Subaru, new 2015 and 2016 models are now rolling out with considerably improved infotainment systems, and connectivity is significantly easier than it was. The 7" LCD screen infotainment used in some mid range and all higher end models is the best system Subaru has had in years. Hopefully Subaru will soon improve the more basic 6.2" system used lower or mid range models.

According to JD Power, here are the top models in this 2015 study. Again, the survey was done in 2014 on 2012 model cars and scored as PP100 - problems per 100 cars.
The study says that nearly 30% of the problems were related to automatic transmission hesitation and rough shifting, but doesn't measure the severity of the technology problems- whether the perceived problem was fixed by simply pairing or repairing a phone to a car's bluetooth for example.
Subaru ranks #20 with 157pp1100, or 1.57 problems per new car. The industry average was 147pp100.
#1 Lexus, with 89pp100 (89 problems per 100 cars)
#2 Buck with 110pp100
#3 Toyota 111pp100
#4 Cadillac 114pp100
#5 Honda 116pp100
#6 Porsche 116pp100, #7 Lincoln 118pp100, #8 Mercedes 119pp100, #9 Scion121pp100, #10 Chevy 123pp100, #11 GMC 123pp100, #12 Acura 124pp100, #13 Nissan 128pp100, #14 Ram truck 134pp100, #15 Audi 138pp100, #16 Mazda 140pp100, #17 Mitsubishi 140pp100, #18 Infinity 144pp100, #19 BMW 146pp100, #20 Subaru 157/pp100, #21 Kia 158pp100, #22 VW 165pp100, #23 Chrysler 173pp100, #24 Volvo 174pp100, #25 Ford 188pp100, #26 Hyundai 188pp100, #27 Dodge 192pp100, #28 Mini 193pp100, #29 Jeep 197pp100, #30 Land rover 258pp100, #31 Fiat 273pp100. 2/13/15 Koenig Subaru/Chevrolet in Pt. Angeles, Wa. drops Chevy and will only carry Subarus.

Subaru, you've come a long way!
Its hard to imagine this happening even 5 years ago.
Subarus are very popular in the Pacific Northwest and starting January 30, 2015 Koenig has dropped new Chevys and will only carry new Subarus! That's a huge statement for a dealership to make, it speaks to the dealer's absolute confidence in the Subaru line that they will stop selling new Chevy cars and trucks- yes, they will continue to carry pre-owned Chevys.
Koeing, a local family owned dealership, has carried Chevys since 1975 and Subarus since 1979 in Pt. Angeles, Washington State, on the Olympic Peninsula around 80 miles from the Kingston-Edmonds Seattle ferry.

2/10/15 Surveys are very important to Subaru and thus to dealers.
A Southern California dealer was recently caught using bad customer email addresses so the buyer's survey went back to the dealer where employees filled it in, gave themselves top scores, and sent it on to Subaru as if the customer had done it.
Subaru, like many companies, places a lot of importance on surveys for marketing, research dealer processes control, and CSI scores. CSI is customer satisfaction index, and dealership sales and service individual personnel and overall departments need to have good survey scores to meet goals and receive certain benefits or bonuses.
Talking about surveys ... we are all totally over-surveyed these days.... online websites where you don't even have to buy anything to get a survey request, to big box hardware stores, department stores, grocery stores, the pet food store, cable companies ... every business wants you to fill in a survey. Just call a business on the phone and they want a survey afterwards. Visit a website and there's pop-up asking if you want to fill in a quick survey. Or the cashier circles a website URL on the receipt and mentions how important it is or that you get entered in a contest. And it is important to them- meeting goals and getting paid bonuses can be partly based on survey responses.
And after a major purchase there are companies whose only job is to contact you hoping to get get surveys.
But how reliable are surveys...
Satisfied buyers sometimes think "Oh, all is fine, I have nothing to say or add so won't take the 10-15 minutes to fill this in". But happy people are the very ones businesses hope will fill it in.  There are even form letters that car shoppers use when looking for a deal- the letter promises a good happy survey in exchange for a low price.
Confession- I don't always do the survey when I buy something, on eBay or Amazon for example.
But people who are unhappy or want to make a statement about something will take advantage of a survey and send it in with low scores. But even average scores like a 3 on the 1-5 scale or a 7 or 8 on a 1-10 scale are considered bad and flagged by some companies.  I know from recent experience that Comcast is 1-5 and Subaru's service department survey is on a 1-10 scale, with highest numbers the best and everyone's goal.
Sales people won't get paid bonuses if their overall scores fall below an 8 or 9 out of 10 at some dealerships, but are penalized if they outright ask for top scores. One might think an 8 on a 1-10 scale is a good score but its not, 8 is a fail.
This particular dealer's scores were apparently so low that they had employees at a another dealership they owned send in enough faked responses that Subaru actually caught them at it. Yikes! Car companies can penalize dealers who blatantly or openly even ask for top scores. But getting caught doing fake surveys? Yikes yikes yikes! That will create a lot more problems for the dealer, but at least we're all talking about surveys.

here's the full story, from Automotive News
"Subaru of America filed a federal lawsuit against one of its California dealerships and its employees, accusing them of forging more than 200 customer satisfaction surveys to improve the dealership’s reputation and avoid termination.
A September investigation of South Coast Subaru in Costa Mesa, Calif., showed that 224 dealership customer service evaluations from 2014 had been generated from an IP address at South Coast Acura, another dealership owned by South Coast, website Law360 reported Monday.
Managers instructed employees to fill out surveys, the suit contends. They were completed every few minutes throughout employees’ lunch hours, according to court documents.
Subaru’s suit, filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, Calif., accused the dealership, sales managers Tuan Pham and Gordon Min and 10 unidentified employees of breaching the dealer agreement contract.
The dealer agreement orders that dealership employees refrain from all conduct that could harm Subaru’s product reputations or the marketing of Subaru’s products. It mandates that dealerships do not engage in any unfair, deceptive, misleading, unethical, discriminatory, fraudulent, illegal or otherwise prohibited practice, court documents said.
The dealership is expected to collect valid email addresses from customers at the time a Subaru vehicle is purchased. Dealerships are then supposed to share customer email addresses with Subaru for additional customer surveys after a vehicle purchase and completions of vehicle service. Subaru also uses these email addresses to send service reminders and information about other service-related issues.
'Sham email' The investigation revealed that customer orders and deal jackets that matched with false surveys did not originally contain an email address for the buyer or contained an email address that was incorrect. South Coast reported sales of those vehicles with “sham email addresses,” and the surveys were sent to email inboxes controlled by South Coast, Subaru accused in the complaint.
“Defendants prevented Subaru from discovering the actual customer satisfaction level of Subaru retail customers at South Coast Subaru by providing sham customer surveys to [Subaru],” the complaint said.
Subaru “did not, does not and will likely never know the actual customer satisfaction levels of Subaru retail customers at South Coast Subaru.”
Subaru has suffered monetary damage and injury to its business, reputation and goodwill and will sustain loss of revenues and profits, court documents said.
Customer satisfaction In November 2012, South Coast Subaru had not met its contractual obligation to provide a high enough level of customer satisfaction for an extended period, and Subaru took action -- called a “notice of requirement to cure” -- that could have resulted in a termination of its agreement with the dealership.
During 2013, South Coast’s customer satisfaction performance improved, and the dealership broke free from the cure program, according to court documents.
Because of the survey meddling, South Coast failed to advance the goals of customer satisfaction, update Subaru with customer complaints and resolve customer satisfaction issues, the documents said.
Subaru’s attorneys and South Coast’s staff have not returned phone calls or emails from Automotive News so far this week. Subaru declined to comment on the case.
Subaru has posted seven years of consecutive U.S. sales growth and significantly outpaced the market last year with record sales of 513,693 vehicles. Dealers were told at this year’s National Automobile Dealers Association convention in San Francisco that 97 percent of Subaru's 617 U.S. dealers are profitable -- a record for the Japanese brand.

2/3/15 January 2015 sales 40,812 total, and so the sales boom continues into a whole new year..
Thats the biggest January Subaru has ever had, and puts the company on track for 600,000 + for the year if sales continue at this pace. Subaru's stated 2015 sales goal is a quite do-able 540,000.
Of note, this is the 11th month with 40,000 sales, and that kind of number seems to be the new norm.
January's 40,812  is 7812, or 24%, over last January, 2014...
The January 2015 sales leader is the Outback. It continues to bring many first time buyers to Subaru. The Forester needs the quieter ride, new features, and improved audio and back-up camera presumably coming soon  on the 2016 models.
The Crosstrek is selling more month after month, and after only 3 model years has become Subaru's third largest seller. The updated 2015 Crosstrek is quieter riding, and has better audio/bluetooth/back-up camera features. The new Sunrise Yellow Special Edition due this spring already is generating interest, but there are only 1000 available. Crosstrek's future is bright. The Hybrid is struggling given the current low gas prices and Subaru is offering 0% financing (currently for 36 months).
Legacy sales are up a comfortable amount, and Subaru hopes to grow in the 4 door market, so expect low lease payment programs and low interest rates to help motivate sales.
WRX and STI consistently do well spring, summer and fall, with winter being the slow time. It might help of course, if they came with all-season instead of summer tires so buyers didn't have to immediately shell out for all-seasons just to safely drive it.
WRX and STI continues to do well. I frequently get requests for a 2014 5 door (long sold out), or when a new wagon will be available.
BRZ is struggling, but then winter isn't the time the rear wheel drive BRZ is expected to sell.
And January 2015 is the first month with 0, zero, none, not one single Tribeca being sold. 9 were delivered last month,  December 2014. And that's it, thats the end, there were none in January 2015. A look at the online inventory shows none still listed for sale anyplace. So this is the end of the line for Subaru's first so-called 7 passenger which really should have been marketed as a 5 +2. There will be another coming along soon enough, but its won't be called a Tribeca.

January 2015 sales by model
Outback 11,351 Jan 15, is 3121 or 38% over 8230 Jan 2013

Crosstrek 6,513 Jan 15, which is 1712 or 36% over 4801 Jan 2014
Impreza 5,096 Jan 15, which is 844 or 20% over Jan 14
Legacy 3,881, which is 1146 or 42% over 2735 Jan 14

1/9 Subaru plans to update their Starlink app in some coming 2016 models.
Details, including models, pricing, and specific functions, to be announced.
Current 2015 Outback, Legacy, Impreza and Crosstrek models - except 2015 Forester and BRZ, and hopefully they will get the upgrades soon - have updated audio/infotainment systems with generous 6.2" to 7" LCD screens, and already include Subaru's Starlink news, weather, and music Android and iPhone smartphone app.
Subaru has announced plans for an expansion of the Starlink app to include AT&T connectivity and "stolen vehicle recovery, automatic collision notification, remote vehicle services such as lock/unlock via a smartphone device and monthly vehicle health reports".
2015 Subarus (except most Foresters, BRZs) already include SiriusXM radio and other features such as weather, stock market, and sports reports and a gas station finder.  Late in 2014, SiriusXM purchased Agero's connected vehicle services business which will now provide services for Subaru.
Here's the press release from 1/5 "Subaru of America, Inc. today announced agreements with Sirius XM Connected Vehicle Services Inc., a unit of Sirius XM, and AT&T to provide enhancements to its Subaru Starlink in-vehicle connectivity system. The enhancements will deliver improved personal safety and security services to vehicle occupants via 4G LTE wireless connectivity.
Starlink is the Subaru in-vehicle platform that provides hands-free connectivity, entertainment and safety services to vehicle occupants. Starlink, soon coming with built-in AT&T 4G LTE capability, will deliver features provided by Sirius XM Connected Vehicle Services including stolen vehicle recovery, automatic collision notification, remote vehicle services such as lock/unlock via a smartphone device and monthly vehicle health reports. STARLINK will be available in select 2016 model year Subaru vehicles starting later this year.
"Working with trusted, industry leaders such as Sirius XM and AT&T to enhance the Subaru STARLINK in-vehicle connectivity system is a natural fit for Subaru," said Alan Bethke, vice president of marketing, Subaru of America, Inc. 12/29/14 2014 sales total is expected to pass 500,000 as people continue to discover that Subaru is a great car.
Its not an overnight success though, Subaru has been on this growth path for the past 7 years, but even before that Subaru was putting out quality all wheel drive cars. It was just mostly a NW, NE, and greater Rocky Mountain area semi-secret ignored in drier and warmer climates
from a press release
Subaru of America, Inc. has reached a significant milestone in its history, by retailing 500,000 vehicles in a single calendar year. The milestone caps a remarkable seven year growth period for the brand in the U.S. in which the company has grown from 187,699 vehicle sales in 2008 to what will total over 500,000 sales in 2014, once the sales year closes on January 2
The growth in Subaru sales can be attributed to a combination of improved vehicle offerings, targeted and award-winning marketing and an improved retailer body. The current generation of Subaru vehicles grew in size compared to the previous generation in order to better suit the needs of the American buyer while also delivering improved interiors, technology and safety features such as the award-wining Eyesight system. Furthermore, the company's retail outlets have embraced process and amenity improvements as sales volume increased, while the total number of outlets has remained steady.
All of the company's current models have contributed to its sales success; the current Impreza (four and five-door) is enjoying its best-ever generation and the Outback and the Forester mid-size CUV now retail 300,000 units per year, combined. The new small CUV entrant, XV Crosstrek, has also added over 60,000 sales to the year-total, while the all-new Legacy sedan is enjoying its best sales ever; more than doubling its year-over-year monthly sales since the launch of the 2015 model. On the performance side, sales of the company's sporty models, the WRX and STI, are at their highest levels ever following the debut of the all-new 2015 models.
Thomas J. Doll, president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America, Inc. said; "We are delighted to have reached this historic milestone and our results show we are delivering vehicles that people want to buy. That we have grown so steeply and also so steadily over the last seven years is a testament to our products and to the commitment of our retailers who have had to manage this increase in capacity. There is a positive air around our business and we have no plans to stop our growth; we expect 2015 to also be another record year for Subaru."
