2010 Forester news and updates

1/5/13 recall Optional puddle lights (small outside lights under each door that illuminate the ground) may short circuit when exposed to saltwater, which could lead to overheating and possible fire. Models involved have the optional puddle lights and are the 2010 and 2011 Legacy and Outback, 2009-2012 Foresters sold before January 2012, and 2006-2012 Tribecas sold before January 2012. Reportedly around 54000 car in the US could be involved. According to online reports, the problem has been known for years with various fixes failing to solve it. The latest repair will be new wiring with a fuse. Recall #WQE-41

3/13/12 recall- The rear center seatbelt on  Foresters built between November 26, 2007 and March 13, 2012 might not work correctly with some child safety seats (CRSs) that require a short belt routing configuration. The center seatbelt has an Automatic Locking Retractor that may not lock when such a configuration is used. It's necessary to replace the rear seat center seatbelt assembly. Recall code #WQA-37. Call Subaru 800-782-2783, or NHTSA at 888-327-4236 about campaign #12V099000.

new 10/31/10 optional side window rain deflectors. They look good and work well. For 2009 and newer Foresters. Dealer installed only, not available factory or port installed. See your local parts dealer.

9/1/10  2011 Forester CVT rumors keep popping up. Many of us had hoped for a 2011 Forester CVT but it seems the 11s will have the same 4 speed auto and 5 speed manual choices. Well, at least at first. Maybe.
Subaru teased us a while ago, announcing that the 2011 Forester will have an updated 2.5L DOHC with a timing chain and requiring 0w-20 synthetic oil. No reason was given and no transmission or other mechanical upgrades or changes was announced, and as a result there has been much talk and speculation as to the reason for a make-over of the tried and trusty 2.5L.
It was announced at the same time that the 2011 Forester is expected to get a minor 1mpg better economy over the 10 with the same transmissions (thats not the 10% the article below mentions),  and the engine will require the new 0w-20 synthetic oil.
So, rumors keep popping up- is a CVT is coming on the 2011 model? Maybe,  maybe not. Will it be a mid-2011 model year change, or will the 2011 be a short run replaced by an early 2012?
All is still rumor, speculation, as the article below says, "details remain murky". But where there's enough smoke there's fire, and yes Subaru holds their cards close to the chest...
"According to a Nikkei report sourced by Automotive News, Subaru will soon unveil an updated version of its four-cylinder boxer engine, which may reduce fuel consumption by as much as 10 percent. The redesign would mark the first major change in the Subaru's horizontally opposed engine in nearly two decades. While details remain murky, the report suggests the engine will displace between 2.0 and 2.5 liters and will be paired to a continuously variable transmission to maximize efficiency. The engine is expected to make its first appearance in the Forester compact SUV by the end of 2010, and will be followed by applications in the Legacy and Impreza...."  the article

July 2010- Subaru's new 5W-30 synthetic oil is recommended on turbos (not required on 2010 Forester)

7/3/10 -  2011 Forester details initial information released. Looks like no CVT transmission, or diesel engine (but no one really expected a diesel).
The 2.5L engine is upgraded to a chain-driven double overhead cam DOHC (replacing belt driven SOHC). the same 170 horsepower at slightly at lower RPMs, 174 ft-lbs torque at 4100rpm (2010s have 170 at 4400) so a minor improvement, and the new engine is rated at 1 mpg better fuel economy, up to 21/27 for both the manual 5 spd and automatic 4 spd.
New for 2011, the 2.5L requires synthetic 0W-30, and the XT turbo requires Synthetic 5W-30 oil.
New top of the line X and XT Touring models.
All models except base X have Bluetooth, and driver's window auto up/down feature.
Model line-up
> 2.5L X, Premium, Limited and new top of the line Touring.  Premium gets redesigned alloy wheels. X Touring model adds HID low beams, dual front zone climate control, silver roof rails, electroluminescent guages, outside mirrors with turn signals, upgraded stereo
> XT turbos are Premium and new top of the line Touring. XT Limited is dropped. Premium gets the 10way power seat, and both get a redesigned rear spoiler.
> new Stereos:

June 2010- 2011 models- the supply of 10s is expected drop long before 2011 models are available in the Fall in September/October? No changes for the 2011 have been announced.

5/28 no more orders for accepted 2010 Foresters. This means the supply or 2010s for sale on lots will begin to drop. No information available for 2011s yet.

2/7 new option - available starting February 2010, hands free cell phone bluetooth 'BlueConnect' now available on 2010 models with Clarion single disc stereo model #CP604U1 or Panasonic CH changer stereo model #PP644U6 installed after 9/2009. See image above.

1/30 X SE models arriving at dealers

1/29/10 X SE and Limited Navigation with Convenience package prices announced

1/24/10 new and updated Forester brochures now available including new X 'SE' and Limited 'Navigation and Convenience Package' information

1/12/10- 2 new 2010 Forester Option Packages  announced and confirmed at the Detroit Auto Show. New Option Packages available on cars arriving March early February 2010.
X model gets a new Special Edition (SE) Option Package (option code #21, MSRP $400) which includes 16" alloy wheels and roof rails (replacing steel wheels and no roof rails).  X Limited gets a new Navigation and Convenience Package (option code #22, MSRP $500 increase over Navigation Pkg, for a total of $2300) which adds cargo cover, HID headlights, titl and new telescoping steering wheel, and one-touch folding rear seats to the Navigation system package.

6/5/09 Cars and brochures starting to slowly arrive at dealers
5/5/09 Models, prices and major 'Option Packages' announced.
Price changes - 2.5X up $400,  Premium with All Weather Package up $400 (the 10 base Premium is the same price as 09 with AWP), 2.5X Limited up $100,  XT Limited up $200,  with Navigation and bluetooth $300.

New for all 2010 models (not just Forester), Subaru is using major 'Option Packages' to equip cars. These are factory-only upgrade packages available on appropriate models.
For example - the All Weather Package (was standard on 09 Premiums) is now Option Package (#02) on the 2010 Premium, so not all Premiums will have it, but it was standard on all 09 Premiums (except for the very first few months production). So should we call this new base Premium without the All Weather Package a 'Premium Lite'

New on 2010 Forester
New all models, overhead Map Lights get 'Door Open' switch (light fades off).
New 2.5X Premium gets a 10way power seat with power lumbar

2010 Forester - Model Option Packages

This section is for the major model upgrades and not the option packages and individual options  below.

This is a new way for Subaru to equip vehicles. For example, the All Weather Pkg was standard on the 2009 premium, and now it's an option on 2010s. No doubt this to help sales in warm areas where the option is not needed but it means the buyer will have to check features carefully on any car.

Some of the features and packages here are standard equipment on certain models. subject to change, correction, updating

NHTSA Crash Test Results

IIHS, 2010 model
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
2010 Forester is a Top Safety pick and gets top Good rating

3/24/09 Update crash test new roof strength rating system and 09 Forester does well!' The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is launching a new roof strength rating system to help consumers pick vehicles that will help protect them in rollover crashes. Twelve small SUVs are the first to be put to the test. Only 4 earn the top rating of good. The Volkswagen Tiguan has the strongest rated roof, and the Kia Sportage has the weakest among the 2008-09 models evaluated.
This new rating system is based on Institute research showing that occupants in rollover crashes benefit from stronger roofs. Vehicles rated good must have roofs that are more than twice as strong as minimum federal safety standards require.

The Tiguan, Subaru Forester, Honda Element, and Jeep Patriot earn good ratings. The Suzuki Grand Vitara, Chevrolet Equinox, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, and Mitsubishi Outlander are rated acceptable. Roofs on the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape are marginal, and the Kia's is poor.
"We anticipate that our roof strength test will drive improved rollover crash protection the same way our frontal offset and side impact consumer test programs have led to better protection in these kinds of crashes," says Institute president Adrian Lund...
...How roofs are evaluated: In the Institute's roof strength test, a metal plate is pushed against 1 side of a roof at a constant speed. To earn a good rating, the roof must withstand a force of 4 times the vehicle's weight before reaching 5 inches of crush. This is called a strength-to-weight ratio. For an acceptable rating, the minimum required strength-to-weight ratio is 3.25. A marginal rating value is 2.5. Anything lower than that is poor.
... Cars have been built to meet the same roof crush standard, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 216, since 1973. The rule was extended in 1994 to include all passenger vehicles up to a gross weight rating of 6,000 pounds. Many SUVs and pickups are heavier, so they're exempt. In 2005, the government proposed an upgrade to cover these larger vehicles and require the roofs on all passenger vehicles to have a strength-to-weight ratio of 2.5. Many vehicles already meet this ratio and would earn only a marginal rating in the Institute's new roof strength test. A final rule is still pending...'more from IIHS.org

All Wheel Drive with Electronic Stability Control
standard on all models
Manual transmission  uses 'Continuous all wheel drive'  viscous center differential detect wheel spin and directs power to the front or rear axle as needed.   Normally a 50/50 front/rear power split
Automatic transmission uses 'Active all wheel drive', with electronically controlled variable transfer clutch that detects wheel spin and directs power to the front or rear axle as needed. Normally 80/20 (or 90/10 depending on source) front rear power split.

VDC (vehicle dynamics control), electronic stability control with TCS traction control
VDC vehicle dynamics control, is a stability and traction skid control system that measures and monitors steering wheel input, braking, vehicle angle etc and then applies individual brakes and/or reduces engine power to counteract skids or slides to help keep maintain driver control.
TCS Traction Control System. TCS senses spinning wheels and applies the brakes to maintain traction.

PZEV
a brief simple summary
(a brief, simple summary)
The EPA says PZEV is the cleanest running gas car on today's market based on emissions testing for carbon-containing compounds, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, and other tailpipe nastiness.
What it does
1. A charcoal cannister catches unburned gas left in the engine when it's turned off so it doesn't just evaporate.
2. Fuel injectors close tighter when they're not in use.
3. It has a finer mesh in the catalytic converter, as well as optimized placement of precious metal.
4. The engine's electronic brain is set to run hotter at start up so the catalytic converter heats up and works faster.
Brakes 4 wheel 4 channel Anti-lock with Brake Assist: all disc brakes, Ventilated Front disc:  11.7"

Towing Towing a trailer
with trailer brakes:  2,400 pounds
without trailer brakes or when pulling up long grades in hot weather: 1,000 pounds
Use common sense and don't overload the car. Do not tow with a new car for the first 1000 miles. A transmission cooler is always a good idea if towing a lot (not available from the factory). The factory hitch is 1.25"

Towing the car- a flatbed is always recommended when towing your Subaru.
A manual transmission can be towed with all wheels on the ground behind a tow truck or motorhome for example, but never with just 2 wheels on the ground.
An automatic can be towed with all 4 wheels on the ground in an emergency for a short distance (under 31 miles) and at very slow speed (under 20mph) but a flatbed is strongly preferred.

1/31/10, 2010 Forester XT comparison - how the XT stacks up to CRV, RAV4, Tiguan, Mariner, Outlander, Forester, Grand Vitara, Terrain from CarandDriver.com February 2010 issue
Forester XT- 4th place. Overall, this is a gratifying blend of agility, practicality, and performance. It’s interesting to note that before we calculated observed fuel economy, the Forester was in third place. Turbos can be thirsty. Airy cockpit, superb sightlines, light, agile, quick.
Lows: Not the world’s most rigid platform, needs a fifth gear. The Verdict: A Subaru that’s finally gone mainstream.

Results- 1st place Toyota Rav4, 2nd VW Tiguan, 3rd Honda CRV, 4th Subaru Forester XT, 5th Mitsubishi Outlander, 6th GMC Terrain, 7th SSuzuki Grand Vitara, 8th Mercury Mariner. Read the article from the February 2010 issue of carandriver.com

1/15/10- Motor Trend 2010 comparison
Forester comes in last place when Motor Trend compares the 2010 Forester to the GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson.
The 2009 Forester was all new and top of the heap in power and fuel economy and was Motor Trend's 2009 Sport Utility of the Year. That was then.
In this new comparison of  2010 models, the 2010 Forester continued to do well and was slightly faster than the 09 and had better braking for example,  but it just didn't shine like it did 2 years ago when it was brand new..
The results:  #1 CRV, #2 Tuscon, #3 GMC Terrain, #4 Forester. read the article Motor Trend

2009 Motor Trend comparison
5/25/08 Motortrend.com compares the 2009 Forester
to the Nissan Rogue, Honda CRV, Saturn VUE Green Line, Toyota RAV4. 'Three inches separate the herd in length (about the length of an index finger, not very much)..  lowest (horsepower): the CR-V's and RAV4's 166, highest: the Nissan's and Subaru's 170hp...  the all-new 2009 Subaru Forester, mind you-walks off in first place in this survey because it apes almost everything the others do right and sidesteps nearly all their pratfalls. It rides like a La-Z-Boy (credit the new double A-arm rear suspension's 0.8-inch-longer travel), though it can slightly meander at times. It steers with a sweet buildup of rim forces. And unlike everything else here, affords this rare thing called "great outward vision. Exorcized of cramped rear legroom and graceless styling, the Subie's charm becomes hard to resist."
