What is a Legacy and Outback?
Made by Subaru (Fuji Heavy Industries of Japan) in Lafayette, Indiana.

The Legacy is a line of cars with 2 models: Legacy and Outback sharing the  same body (wagon or sedan).
There are many versions of the Legacy and Outback.
To be technically correct, the Legacys should be a Legacy Legacy and the Outback should be called the Legacy Outback....

Legacy is the basic model, starting with the Legacy 2.5i model, upgrading to the 2.5i Limited.
The Legacy GT is the 250hp performance model, upgrading to the GT Limited.

Outback is the rugged road model.
It starts out with the Outback 2.5i and has more features than the Legacy 2.5i.
The Outback 2.5i upgrades to the Outback 2.5i Limited.
The Outback XT (or XT Limited) is the 250hp performance version of the Outback, comparable to Legacy GT.
The 3.0R H6 LL Bean wagon and VDC wagon and sedan are out top of the line models and they have the 250hp 3.0L 6 cylinder.

What's New for 05
Price increases effective on cars delivered to dealer starting 9/04 and again 5/05

This is the 4th generation Legacy. 3rd was 2000-04, 2nd 1995-99, 1st was 1990-94.

gone 4cylinder Outback Sedan; gone H6 Outback Sedan;  gone H6 wagon;  gone OnStar (was on LL Bean, VDC); Gone Weatherband stereo

New Destination charge now $575 (was $550)
New Advertising fee: certain regions of the US may already have a new $275 Advertising Fee added to dealer invoice costs. This is a real charge on the dealer's invoice and is expected to be national by year end (sorry).

New: Yes, the 05 Outback is classed as a light truck for CAFE fuel economy reasons. 'Cafe' stands Corporate Average Fuel Economy. This doesn't affect safety, economy or mean the car will tip over or be unsafe like a SUV. Many other vehicles are classed this way including Honda CRV, Dodge minivan, Toyota Rav4, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Honda Odyssey, Honda Element, Cadillac ESV, Chrysler Pacifica etc etc. Here is the official statement from Subaru.

New name Outback 2.5i & Outback 2.5i Limited replace Outback and Outback Limited
New name Outback 3.0R sedan and wagon replaces VDC but might still be unofficially called the VDC. Note: the only badging is  3.0R (no VDC anywhere in it)
New models  turbo-charged Outback XT & XT Limited

New: Engine: 2.5L turbo with 250hp
New: Engine 3.0L H6 now with 250hp
New: Transmission  5spd Automatic SportShift transmission on certain models
New: Transmission re-inforced 5 speed manual
New: four-stage heated front seats on all models
New: 8way power driver's seat with lots of height adjustment and power recline
New: 4way power passenger seat and lumbar support on upper end models.
New: Full side-curtain airbags, front and rear!
New: intelligent dual-stage deployment front air bags.
New: Dual pane glass sunroof opens completely, it's huge, see photo (single pane on 3.0R sedan)
New: Re-designed dashboard, center console, headlamps, seats, alloy wheels...
New: Trip computer with outside temp gauge (warns at freezing), instant and average fuel economy, elapsed time etc. Re-sets with trip odometer.
New: Ground clearance increased to 8.4-8.7" depending on model (dimensions)
New: Turn Signals integrated into the outside mirrors on certain models
New: Dual Zone automatic climate control system on certain models.
New:Immobilizer key  on XT, LL Bean, VDC wagon, 3.0R sedan. Car won't start without it
New:Tire Pressure monitoring on certain models. Don't get caught with a flat
New  Increased angle of approach, departure, ramp breakover for improved rough road driving
New  1.75 longer body longer
New  1" longer wheelbase
New  1" wider track
New  Engine/transmission lowered for better stability

My Impressions (if anyone cares)

September 2004: trip on the Oregon Coast, with a variety of steady highway and then coast road speed-up/slow-down driving, averaged 27mpg in a 2.5i automatic.

Good: the ride is quiet and very solid and is should comfortable for road trips,
The dashboards controls are nicely laid out and I really like the colors at night.. off white letters, red needles, soft red highlights.
The new body has a few more angles and I've always liked that.
From the front the headlights have an slightly aggressive look.
The large sunroof is great! Not quite a convertible, but close... a bit noisy with the roofrack cross bars but that's expected.
All the airbags (front, side, side curtain) are a lifesaver and that's a good thing. A kot of airbags at this price.
Good Height adjustment on the power seat  and the power recline feature is important for fine-tuning that all-important seat back.
Buttons turn smoothly and positively, like fan, stereo, lights etc
Stereo sounds good especially in the Limited with optional subwoofer! Bass, mid range and treble adjustments are standard.
Brake pedals a bit firmer but Subaru brakes have always worked well even if they feel soft. They could still feel firmer.
The rear seat now folds flat without flipping the seat cushion forward which is much easier. It's about time.
The rear wiper turns on when transmission in reverse (interval setting). Nice thoughtful touch.

Bad (so I'm picky):
no key in tailgate means getting into the rear cargo area if the car battery is dead and doors are locked is very hard and involves physically climbing into the back to open the rear gate! Who approved this idea? It ought to be fixed. Contact Subaru to voice your concern - 800 SUBARU-3
Key and keyless remote are both big and clunky and should be combined.
These cars need clearer model names and badging. I hope Subaru isn't planning on doing away with names and going to all 'numbers' only.  So the Legacy and Legacy Outback model confusion continues for yet another year
Immobilizer key an excellent idea, just expensive to replace

Idle thoughts: we need a real rugged road model- unpainted bumpers, bigger tires, vinyl washable floor/seats etc
