2016, 2015 Outback optional auto dimming outside mirror with approach light illuminated
optional on all models, the auto dimming outside mirror with approach light darkens as a bright light shines on the auto dimming rear view mirror, and the approach light is on in this photo because either the door was just unlocked or the door is opened.
The light shines on the outside door handles and it convenient at night.

Outback's optional auto dimming outside mirror
Auto dimming outside mirror and approach light (not illuminated here) is optional on all models and requires the dimming rear view mirror. Notice the yellow blind spot detection symbol is on (standard on Limited, optional on Premiums) as the truck approaches.

2017 Subaru Outback Eyesight with two forward facing cameras and large center High Beam Assist sensor
diagrammed 2017 Subaru Outback Eyesight with two forward facing cameras and the large center High Beam Assist sensor.

Eyesight uses two forward facing cameras to see the road ahead, and only works when they can 'see'. Don't block the camera's views, put anything reflective on the dash, hang anything from the rear view mirror, or clean the dash so that it's shiny. Replace the windshield wipers as necessary. The Eyesight cameras will turn off if the windshield fogs up of they can't see for any reason.
do not touch or try to clean the EyeSight camera lenses. It is imperative that extra precaution be used when cleaning the inside of the windshield, because over-spray from cleaners may impair or even damage the cameras’ lenses, which is not a warranty issue.

UPDATES, NEWS, WHAT'S NEW ON THE 2017s
top

Sept 6, 2018
2016-2017 CVT models sold in the US.
Starting September 2018 Subaru is extending the CVT's warranty to 10 years or 100,000 miles (from 5 years or 60,000 miles),
starting at date of first sale on these models
2016-2017 Outback, Legacy
2016-2017 Impreza
2016-2017 Crosstrek
2016-2017 Foresters
2016-2017 WRX
Current owners should receive a letter, or call your local dealer and have your VIN handy.
On cars with over 100,000 miles, repairs must be completed prior to 9/30/19
always contact your local dealer with questions.

5/22/17  2017 Outback, Crosstrek and Legacy factory orders end tomorrow 5/23 at 9pm EST.

That's very little advance notice.
If you want a specially equipped 2017 Outback, Crosstrek or Legacy, please order today or tomorrow because after that its too late.
This also means the 2017 model sell-down is right now for best supply and price.
Dealers have a lot of inventory, especially Outbacks and that means they're motivated sellers.
2018 orders will start in late June, with a delivery ETA perhaps of late July but realistically August.
The 2018 Outback, Crosstrek, and Legacy are all getting some excellent upgrades.
The Crosstrek will be all new,  a Crosstrek version of the 17 Impreza, and the Outback and Legacy are getting a new front grill, headlights, interior trim and other minor upgrades but the big news is the improved audio systems with Android Auto and Apple Carplay!
If those features are important, then you'll want to wait for the 18s.
No more 2018 details, prices, or specs have been announced yet but they will be available once the orders start.
Subaru will offer financing as the 18s arrive but the rates probably won't be as low as what the 17s have, at least at first, and depending on how many 17s are still on lots.

4/6/17 2018  refreshed Outback to be at the NY Auto Show, along with the new Crosstrek.

NY International Auto Show (NAIS) April 14 - Apr 23.
Its going to be a busy show!
A multitude of upgrades make this worth waiting  until July for.. Upgraded audio systems with android auto and apple carplay. Steering Responsive headlights, Rear view camera steering angle lines, Auto locking doors, 10 second power off delay,  new interior color (gray). improved blind spot symbols, quieter, smoother riding....
The 18 Outback keeps the same model lineup - 2.5i, Premium, Limited, Touring, and 3.6 Limited and Touring. All CVTs.
There are a lot of new features but the biggest change is a seemingly little thing... its automatic locking doors. They're are now (finally) available. I think its the most asked for feature and this will be the first Subaru to have it. Most people just assume the doors lock automatically when the car is driven. Now they will.
New 6.5" and 8" audio systems with Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Optional navigation is TomTom with three years of free map updates
New interior Titanium Gray.  Continuing are the Slate Black and  Warm Ivory, and Java Brown on the Touring models.
New rear seat USB outlets for the back seat passengers.
The rear view backup camera now displays steering lines that move as the steering wheel is turned, indicating where the car is heading in reverse
Steering Responsive Headlights are now available, and are much better than the steering responsive fog lights on the 2017s.
Lane keep assist now starts at 37mph instead of 40,
The blind spot symbols are larger, brighter, and moved from the far side of the mirror to the inner side of the mirror housing for increased visibilty
The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) detects individual tire pressure changes so you don't have to check all 4 tires for the one that's low.
Thicker front driver and passenger window glass to reduce wind noise
Redesigned 18"  wheels on Limited and Touring. 2.5i and Premium models continue with 17" silver alloys.
Climate control temperature readings are now on the two dual front zone left/right side dials, and the clock display is larger again
Subaru Starlink audio system
(Android or iPhone required) includes Aha, Pandora, iHeart radio, Stitcher, Calendar, Music Player, News and Weather and now includes the same new features found on the 17 Impreza including Magellan navigation (by subscription),  eBird  local sightings and bird watching locations, Best Parking to locate and compare parking rates, Yelp, Glympse location sharing with friends, Quick Guide car informaton and guide, Eventseeker local events, and RightTrack by Liberty Mutual monitors driving habits (but you have to opt in for this one).
Upgraded steering, suspension and CVT transmission to improve steering feel, ride, and transmission response.

11/4/16 Important note.... if you have a new Outback Premium, Limited or Touring and a cell phone with Mirrorlink (Samsung Notes and Ss, HTCs, Sony Xperia), it is likely to completely freeze when you plug it into the car's USB.
Mirrorlink is a European app that doesn't really do anything in the US but is included on Outback Premium, Limited and Touring models and there is no way to delete or even disable it on the car.
Its mostly Samsung Notes and S phones, HTC, and Sony Xperias that have Mirrorlink coded in, and can't be turned off or deleted.
Plugging it in results in a black phone screen (Note 4) and if there is a work-around, I don't know about it, and
Subaru knows about this but hasn't done anything to fix it.

9/15/15 2017  The Outback  2.5 and 3.6 Touring in the brilliant brown color has been discontinued after a total of 2000 car have been made.
Apparently brilliant brown was planned as a short run of only 2000.
This was also true of the original brilliant brown 2013 Outback Special Appearance package which was also a limited production run.
There is a still a good selection available nationally.

NEW ON 2017s

webpage updated 7/5/16
started 7/1/6

All 2.5i models now have PZEV emissions (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle).

2.5i base model gets alloy wheels. Previously it has black steel wheels with a plastic wheel cover

2.5i Premium
with optional Eyesight gets High Beam Assist. When you have high beams on, it switches them to low beams when it detects an oncoming car.
Premium Option Package #13 (moonroof, power gate, navigation) has been dropped

2.5i and 3.6R Limiteds
New - standard moonroof, pushbutton start/keyless access is on all Limited models. There is no Limited without a moonroof or pushbutton start.

Eyesight gets new HID low beam and halogen high beam headlights with auto low beam aiming, Reverse Automatic Braking which uses 4 sensors in the back bumper to detect an object and help stop the car when going backwards, and High Beam Assist to switch the headlights between high and low settings when an oncoming car is detected on Limited

All new  2.5i and 3.6R Touring model.
Top of the line.
Comes fully equipped with Eyesight, Navigation, Moonroof,  Blind sport detection/rear cross traffic alert, High beam assist, reverse automatic braking, Pushbutton start
Its gets all new heated steering wheel, standard Java Brown leather interior with ivory stitching, Navigation, silver and gloss black dash trim, dark gray front grill, dark gray machines finished 18" alloys, new chrome badging and lower accent trim.

The Touring model has standard roof rails with optional crossbars. It does not have the swiveling crossbars on all other 2010-2017 Outbacks. The roof rails are silver black end caps. The optional crossbars are Thule brand.
new silver finish low profile roof rails,

The interior is Java Brown leather seating surfaces. Ivory stitching,  Available in Brilliant Brown, Crystal black, Lapis blue, Wilderness green and Crystal white colors.

Subaru Starlink app now includes Glympse location sharing app.

Its hard to make a great car better, but here's my 2017 Outback and Legacy wish list
As Subaru moves upscale, here are some things it would be good to have
Rain sensing front wipers

Touring model should have Cooled as well as heated front seats.

The pushbutton start keyless fob is just too large and very heavy
Power rear gate needs a manual open/close mode that doesn't need power
Limited and Touring model's rear seat AC should have a fan speed adjustment.
Auto locking doors at 10 or 15mph. Many other cars have it. Good safety feature.

Passenger seat power height adjustment and lumbar support is needed, on all models
Needs a 10 second power off delay after engine off to have time to close windows, moonroof
Drop the 2.5i base model's 6.2" mediocre radio and use the 7" system already on all other models
TPMS- the tire pressure monitors should be self registering and not require a tire shop to sync them
With pushbutton start, it would be helpful if all 4 outside door handles had touch lock/unlock capability.
Touring model optional Thule crossbars are heavy duty. Lighter duty, low profile crossbars would be better
There is no place in the center console to put a cell phone within easy reach, unless you have a small phone!!
Blind spot and rear cross traffic alert should be standard on all Premiums. Currently standard on Limited, Touring
Power door lock buttons should stay lit for 5-10 seconds when exiting the car so you can see what to press to lock
Eyesight standard on all Limiteds
, with integrated High beam assist sensor instead of that overly large center sensor
Electric parking Hill Holder function (when on) should automatically set the parking brake whenever the car is put in park
4 front wiper intermittent speeds is not enough. The front wipers should have 6 interval speeds, plus the low and high speed.
Climate control should have easier to see settings. the red lettering against a silver background is very hard to see. Black lettering on white, or white on black, would be much better
Easier to set power gate height control. Get rid of the stupidly inconvenient system used now. All it needs a simple knob or dial with "low, medium, medium high, full" gate height settings.
Needs a 10 second power-off delay so you can close windows after turning the engine off, at least on Touring and Limited models. If Subaru wants an upscale model, it needs more upscale features.
The 3 year/36,000 mile new car warranty includes Roadside Assistance which should include any Subaru the new owner has! Subaru should demonstrate their confidence in older models you own when you buy a new one.
With Eyesight, the sunvisors are too short, they're not long enough to block bright sun above the rear view mirror and between the camera lens. There needs to be a small flip down visor on the overhead console to block that area.
More small accessories are needed to personalize a car: bring back optional under-car puddle lights, interior ambient, cupholder, and dash lights, factory front and rear bumper corner anti-scuff moldings, front hood protector etc etc
The two Keyless access fobs should each be a different color to help owners identify their key, and the key fobs need a simple Off or disable setting to lock it in a car when swimming etc instead of wrapping it in tin foil, or the impossible to use pin code access system.
Personally, I'm not too picky about car colors, but Subaru has had the same Ice Silver for way too long. And the Touring model with Java Brown interior is not available with Tungsten. Even I know that Tungsten with Java Brown is a natural combination.

*****************************************************************

NEW 6/1/16- a new remote start is now available with full long distance range on pushbutton start models.
This new remote start replaces the current factory installed optional remote start on pushbutton start cars that doesn't really work well (very short range, weak signal). it works on 2015, 2016 Outbacks and Legacys with pushbutton start, and will be factory installed starting on 2017s ordered with the optional remote start.  The new system uses a 2nd fob with an excellent signal and around a 400 ft range, similar to the remote start that has been available on models with standard keyed ignition. This new system will be installed on new 2017s ordered with remote start but has not been factory installed on any 16s.  Part #H001SAL100

2017 MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
subject to change, correction, updates. Tips and corrections welcomed

see your local servicing dealer for full details and coverage on your specific car
-
full maintenance schedule

Break-in period for the first 1000 miles
Don't race the engine, keep RPMs under 4,000 for the most part and vary the speeds with normal mix of city and highway driving.

The first oil change is required at 6000 miles or 6 months. Its recommended to check the oil every few months between changes.

from the owner's manual
Some engine oil will be consumed while driving. Under the following conditions, oil consumption can be increased and thus require refilling between maintenance intervals:
> When the engine is new and within the break-in period
> When the engine oil is of lower quality
> When the incorrect oil viscosity is used
> When engine braking is employed
> When the engine is operated at high engine speeds
> When the engine is operated under heavy loads
> When towing a trailer
> When the engine idles for long periods of time
> When the vehicle is operated in stop and go and/or heavy traffic situations
> When the vehicle is used under severe thermal conditions
> When the vehicle accelerates and decelerates frequently
Under these or similar conditions, you should check your oil at least every 2nd fuel fill-up and change your engine oil more frequently. If your oil consumption rate is greater than 1 quart every 1,200 miles or 1 liter every 2,000 kilometers, contact your Subaru dealer who may perform a test under controlled conditions.

Always....
Always let a cold engine idle as the oil circulates.
Avoid hard acceleration on a cold engine.
Check the oil between changes

Service schedule
With severe or hard/hot/cold/dusty/towing conditions, shorten the service intervals

All Wheel Drive
with Active Torque Vectoring

Full time all wheel drive. with Active Torque Vectoring (new on 2015s), controls the inner front wheel speed when vehicle is turning.
Blind Spot Detection and Rear Vehicle Detection System

standard on Limiteds and Touring models, optional on Premiums
(first offered on the 2015 Outback and Legacy)

The Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection (SRVD) system uses two radar units, each mounted underneath the sheet metal immediately below the rear taillights. To help avoid damage, the radar units are purposely mounted above the typical bumper impact line.
The radar units send out signals to detect vehicles behind and to each side of the Subaru vehicle, especially those vehicles that might not be visible in the rearview mirrors.

Blind Spot Detection (BSD) (detects a vehicle alongside and slightly to the rear of you),
Lane Change Assist (warns of vehicles approaching in the next lane),
Rear Cross Traffic Alert (warns of vehicles approaching when you're backing out of a parking spot).

Lane Change Assist (LCA) looks for vehicles farther back in an adjacent lane – about 220 feet behind the Subaru vehicle. If the vehicle detected is approaching quickly – at a speed that could bring it alongside the Subaru vehicle within a few seconds – Lane Change Assist will illuminate a warning icon in the exterior mirror on that side. If the driver signals a lane change, the warning icon in the mirror will flash rapidly.
Blind Spot Detection (BSD) is standard on Limiteds, optional on Premiums. It will illuminate a warning icon in the exterior mirror when it detects a vehicle alongside and behind the Subaru vehicle in an area of about 22 feet x 11 feet. If the driver signals a lane change to that side, the warning icon in the mirror will flash.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) uses the same radars and sensors to help detect vehicles that cannot be seen by the driver as they approach from either side. This is especially helpful when reversing from between two larger vehicles. The driver is alerted by a flashing icon in the appropriate exterior mirror, a flashing icon in the rear vision camera display, as well as an audible alert

Standard on Limited, optional on Premium
Eyesight

Eyesight has been upgraded for 2017 with
High Beam Assist
Reverse Automatic braking
HID low beam headlights

Eyesight

Notes-
Eyesight uses two forward facing cameras to see the road ahead, and only works when they can 'see'.

This is the 3rd year for the 3rd generation Eyesight on the Outback and Legacy

Eyesight has two small, forward facing cameras on either side of the rear view mirror.

> new on 2017 models
new  High Beam Assist- included with optional Eyesight on Premium and Limited models. Standard on Touring because Eyesight is standard.
Switches headlight from high beam to low beam when it sees an approaching car. Only works when you have the high beams on. For dark road driving since people don't usually have high beams on in urban areas or on well lit roads.  Uses a sensor behind the rear view mirror.
new  Reverse Automatic Braking- Standard on Touring, and included with optional Eyesight on Limited models.  Not available on Premiums.
4 sensors in the back bumper detect close objects and will stop the car before low speed impact (5mph or less)
new  HID low beam headlights with auto aiming, Halogen high beams. Included with optional Eyesight on Limited models.  HIDs have been standard on the 3.6R Limited, and are standard on the new 2017 Touring model. Not available on Premiums.

> High Beam Assist- included with optional Eyesight on Premium and Limited models. Standard on Touring because eyesight is standard. Switches headlight high beams to low beams when it seen an approaching car when you have the high beams on (new on 2017 models)
> Reverse Automatic braking- included with optional Eyesight on Limited models. Not available on Premium models. Standard on Touring models 4 sensors in the back bumper detect close objects and will stop the car before impact.
(new on 2017 models)
 > HID low beam headlights with auto aiming. Halogen high beams. included with optional Eyesight on Limited models. not available on Premiums. Has been standard on 3.6Rs, and is standard on Touring models.

>  Lane Keep Assist uses the car's electric power steering to help keep the car in its lane at highway speeds over 40mph. (was new on the 2016 model)
Note: t
his function has a steering wheel switch and can be turned on/off by the driver.
 > Steering responsive fog lights- included with Eyesight- uses steering wheel position to briefly turn on the left or right fog light to illuminate a corner when the vehicle is turned. The fog lights have to be off for the system to turn them on.
> Active Cruise Control combines the benefits of cruise control with active monitoring of the road ahead. It issues warnings and activates automatic braking when needed. Adaptive Cruise Control can regulate vehicle speed in order to keep a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead. It does not replace conventional cruise control, which can still be used when desired.
> Pre-Collision Braking can recognize an impending collision, alert the driver and automatically apply the brakes to help avoid a collision or minimize the impact when a collision is inevitable.
> Pre-Collision Brake Assist-  If Eyesight recognizes an impending collision and the driver is applying the brakes but not with enough force, Pre-Collision Brake Assist automatically applies up to full braking pressure in order to try to shorten braking distances.
> Pre-Collision Throttle Management is designed to help prevent drivers from accelerating into a stopped vehicle or other obstacle in front of them. It warns the driver and reduces engine power until he or she applies the brakes to avoid an impact.
> Lead Vehicle Start Alert is a helpful EyeSight feature that alerts the driver when his or her vehicle remains stopped after a vehicle in front has started to move away.
> Lane Departure Warning alerts drivers when they unintentionally move out of their travel lane. It takes no corrective vehicle action other than issuing visual and audible warnings.
> Lane Sway Warning acts in a similar way, detecting unusual back and forth vehicle movement within the lane of travel. Lane Departure Warning works at all speeds, while Lane Sway Warning only operates at speeds over 32 mph.

Eyesight cars have three windshield washer squirters, with the middle one to clean in front of the cameras.
The camera’s field of view is about 35 degrees horizontally from the center of the windshield.
The camera’s field of vision extends up to about 360 feet in front of the vehicle, but objects very close to the vehicle may not be detected
EyeSight works to recognize obstacles up to about a 30-mph (or less) speed differential. Essentially, EyeSight needs time to recognize an object or potential obstacle. If the speed difference between the EyeSight vehicle and the object is greater than up to 30 mph, the object will likely not be detected in time for Eyesifght to stop the car, ie a car at 60mph running into a wall for example. At 60mph, by the time Eyesight sees and recognizes the stopped object, there wont be time or distance to fully stop the car.

EYESIGHT IS optional on Premium and Limited models. Standard on Touring models
Fuel cutoff system fuel cutoff system detects an airbag deployment and cuts off to minimize fire danger after an accident. (new on 2013)
Brake override system brake override system- when gas and brake pedals are both pressed, the brake overrides and stops the car. To prevent operator error unintended acceleration
(new on 2013)

In the event of an impact, the EDR will freeze data including how various systems were operating, for example if seatbelts were buckled, if the gas or brake pedals were pressed, and vehicle speed. No personal data is stored. To read data, special equipment is required. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer (Subaru), other parties such as law enforcement that have the equipment can read the information if they have access to the vehicle or EDR.  Existing laws generally provide that information in an EDR is confidential and is the property of the owner of the motor vehicle. Information is accessed through the airbag system using a Subaru service computer.

VDC vehicle dynamics control, is an electronic stability control system that measures and monitors steering wheel input, braking, vehicle angle etc and then applies individual brakes and/or reduces engine power to counteract skids or slides to help keep maintain driver control.
TCS traction control system electronically sensing spinning wheels and uses the brakes to slow the spinning wheel.
Incline Start assist- briefly prevents the vehicle from rolling back as the driver moves their foot from the brake to the gas. Note- this is only for 1.5 seconds, and is not the same as the electric parking brake's Hill Holder function
Active Torque Vectoring modulates the inner front wheel speed when the car is turning.

Emissions
new all 2017 2.5L Outbacks are PZEV
here is a brief, simple summary.
PZEV is Partial Zero Emission Vehicle.
The EPA says PZEV is the cleanest running gas car on today's market based on emissions testing for carbon-containing compounds, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, and other tailpipe nastiness.
What it does
1. A charcoal canister catches unburned gas left in the engine when it's turned off so it doesn't evaporate.
2. Fuel injectors close tighter when they're not in use.
3. It has a finer mesh in the catalytic converter, as well as optimized placement of precious metal.
4. The engine's electronic brain is set to run hotter at start up so the catalytic converter heats up faster.
PZEV is not available on the 3.6L
Brakes
4 wheel disc, 4 channel anti-lock, low wear indicator
Brake override system stops car if both brake and gas pedals are pressed.
Brake assist for maximum brake pressure

front: 12.4 ventilated front disc with dual caliper piston
rear: 11.8 ventilated rear disc with single piston caliper

Auto release function- wear seatbelt, step on brake pedal, put car in gear, lightly press gas pedal.

To use in as emergency brake lightly pull the brake button up to activate but only in an serious emergency when you cannot normally brake.
This will cause your rear wheels to lock so be very careful.

Pull the brake button UP to activate the brakes, push it down to release them.

Incline Start Assist

hillholder function
hill holder 'on' symbol
If the Hill Holder function is turned on, when you restart the car it is on (was new on 2013 models).
The Hill Holder button is on the center console next to the XMode button
The Hill Holder brake system is standard on all models.
It uses the electric parking brake.
The system can be turned on by pressing the Hill Holder button in the center console.
A green image of a car on an incline is in the upper right dash comes on (see image).
When stopping on a hill 5% or steeper, either going forward up or backwards down a hill,  the Hill Holder activates the electric parking brake and holds the car from rolling.
Stepping on the gas releases the brake so the car will move.

Works going up or backwards down an incline.
Note: if you are already stopped on an incline and did not press the Hill Holder button, pull up the Parking Brake button - it works exactly the same.

Incline Start Assist holds the vehicle from rolling back for 1.5 seconds as the driver moves their foot from the brake to the gas pedal (was new for 2015s)

2017 2.5i Model Overview

Standard Equipment Feature Summary

Note: if your cell phone has Mirrorlink (Samsung Notes and Ss, HTCs, Sony Xperia), it is likely to completely freeze when you plug it into the car's USB.
Mirrorlink is a European app that doesn't really do anything in the US but is included on Outback Premium, Limited and Touring models and there is no way to delete or even disable it on the car.
Its mostly Samsung Notes and S phones, HTC, and Sony Xperias that have Mirrorlink coded in, and cant be turned off or deleted.
Plugging it in results in a black phone screen (Note 4) and if there is a work-around, I don't know about it.

STEREO

Note: if your cell phone has Mirrorlink (Samsung Notes and Ss, HTCs, Sony Xperia), it is likely to completely freeze when you plug it into the car's USB.
Mirrorlink is a European app that doesn't really do anything in the US but is included on Outback Premium, Limited and Touring models and there is no way to delete or disable it on the car.
Its mostly Samsung Notes and S phones, HTC, and Sony Xperias that have Mirrorlink app coded in, and can't be turned off or deleted.
Plugging it in results in a black phone screen (Note 4) and if there is a work-around, I don't know about it.

 WHAT IS....

> HD radio

HD Radio is free, digital FM radio broadcasting with 'subchannels' of the main FM channel you are listening to.
The ‘HD’ in ‘HD Radio’ is part of iBiquity Digital’s brand name for its digital AM and FM radio technology.
HD is not an acronym for either hybrid digital or high definition, it is simply the name for this technology.
HD Radio broadcasting is free, there are no subscription fees.
The HD channels are not particularly strong, so you might lose the signal in garages or in mountains or downtown between buildings.
The service includes iTunes Tagging which lets you capture information about a song on the radio and store it on your Apple device by pushing the "Tag" button on the HD Radio receiver. When your device is connected to iTunes, a list of tagged songs will appear which can be purchased.
HD radio website, check stations etc

Subaru Starlink Connected Services
Safety Plus and Security Plus
(new on the 2016 model)

if you have a
Outback Premium, Limited, Touring
note: not on base Outback 2,5i

Helps with notification in an emergency accident/collision, if you're locked out, lost, car is stolen, broken down, with emergency services, and with mechanical issues and notification.

Important Note- this system does NOT work if the car's battery is dead, so in the event of a dead battery or an accident where the battery is dislodged, have your cellphone handy because the Starlink won't work.

There are 3 SiriusXM staffed call centers in the U.S. (in Texas and Utah)
AT&T provides the cellular service for emergency (red SOS button) and user requested roadside assistance (blue button) services via an integrated 4G phone connection. The phone has a lithium backup battery so it has power in the event of an accident. The red and blue buttons are in the overhead console. The car does need to be in an area with AT&T cell coverage for the connection to work (check coverage at http://att.com/maps/wireless-coverage.html).
Sirius/XM provides the telematics

Android and Apple phones use the Starlink app for infotainment, and then either the MySubaru app or online at MySubaru.com for connected vehicle services and account information.
So if you have an iphone or android, download both the Subaru Starlink and MySubaru apps

Outback and Legacy- Pin Code Access
Requires Keyless Access with Pushbutton Start

What is it? A back-up unlock system so you can get into the car when you dont have a key fob handy. To use it, you have to program in a series of 5 digits by tapping the rear gate lock button the same number of times as each of the 5 digits. (ie twice for 2, four times for 4, five times for the digit 5, and this is done for each of the 5 digits you programmed in).
Then you can lock and unlock the door by tapping the rear gate lock button repeatedly in the series that you programmed in.

Note- the PIN Code Access is rather difficult to do... it can be frustrating to tap this small, hard to see button correctly in a series of 5 multiple taps.
The solution is for the Pin Code Access to only be two digits. Two would be much easier to do and still provide security against someone trying to randomly tap the code

Preparation to register a 5-digit security Pin Code
1. Close all doors including rear gate.
2. Press and hold the button on the access key. Then all doors, including rear gate, will be locked.
3. Keep the button pressed, and press the rear lock button on the gate within 5 seconds after step 2.
4. Press and hold the rear lock button on the gate for more than 5 seconds. Then a chirp will sound.
5. Press the button on the access key while the chirp sounds. Then the chirp will stop and the preparation is complete

For example, to register 32468 as the PIN code, perform the following procedure on an Outback
1. Press the rear lock button three times.
2. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button twice.
3. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button four times.
4. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button six times.
5. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button eight times.
6. Perform steps 1 to 5 again within approximately 30 seconds after the buzzer starts sounding intermittently.
7. All doors (including rear gate) will be unlocked and locked.
Then the PIN code will be registered.

If you make an error during the registration procedure, open the driver’s door and then close it.
Then start over from the procedure described in Preparation above
To protect your vehicle from theft, you cannot register 5 digit codes such as 00000, 11111 to 99999, or 12345.
Do not register your vehicle license plate number or simple numbers such as11122 or 12121.

You cannot unlock by PIN Code Access in the following cases
- when the access key is within the operating ranges
- when the ignition switch is in the ACC or ON position
- If you make an operation error during the unlocking procedure, start over with the unlocking procedure after waiting for 5 seconds or longer.
- To protect your vehicle from theft, a buzzer will sound if incorrect PIN codes are entered five times continuously. If this occurs, you cannot unlock the doors by PIN Code Access for 5 minutes.

NOTE

disable the Outback and Legacy keyless access proximity key in order to hide it in the car when camping, swimming, skiing, biking: remove the emergency key to carry with you to get back in the car (yes the alarm will go off when you open the door until you unwrap the proximity key), wrap the proximity key in foil, then hide it and hope no one finds it and steals the car.

How to order a Subaru

Subarus are popular cars, sometimes the car you want isn't on the lot.
And some models can very very difficult to get.
That's pretty common with Subaru.
Hopefully there's more than one color or model you'll be happy with.

But... when there's no car, the choices are:
waiting and hoping the right car shows up one day,
compromising on what you want,

your dealer finds and can get a car from another local dealer
(but they're hard to get everyplace)

or .... you factory order what you want!

Its all easy.
Here's how it works

You and the salesperson work through the model, option package, color, and accessories, and agree on a price for the car.
Placing the order is easy - dealers have access to Subaru's quick online form. Its just a few fast, simple, pages.
The order form needs the details on the car, and the buyer's name, address, phone and email.
Yes, Subaru expects the dealer to collect a deposit when the order is placed.

When a car is ordered
Orders are allocated in the beginning of the month and take around 2 full months, but it depends on the model and it can be shorter or longer.
When an order is placed, the dealer will get a VON- vehicle order number- unless there's a car already in the system that can be adapted to fit the order and then there might be a VIN.
ETA- estimated time of arrival-, the usual fresh order ETA will probably be a generic "last week of (month)" which will generally be the end of the 2nd full month after the order is placed.
The ETA will change as time passes, and eventually there will be a VIN and an exact ETA date, though that date is subject to, and frequently does, change.

Please be sure this is the right car and you're willing to wait. Cancelled orders can affect a dealer's supply.
Your dealer or salesperson should check the ETA from time to time and notify you of any changes.
The dealer wants you to get the car as soon as possible but doesn't control the ETA.

The car arrives with protective plastic on the upper surfaces. The dealer service dept will need to do a PDI (pre-delivery inspection), and then the car will be cleaned for the agreed pick-up time.

Note that Interest rates and lease programs are what is current when the car is picked up and contracts signed, when its actually purchased, not when the car is ordered. Subaru announces interest rates and lease programs monthly. And trade values can change over the order time. The trade will be checked when the purchase is completed. Subaru's GTP - guaranteed trade program - is good for late model Subaru trade-ins. Its on www.Subaru.com > for owners. Have your VIN handy.

And you'll get the car you want!
