Whats New

NEW 6/1/16- a new remote start is now available with full long distance range for pushbutton start models. It does use a 2nd remote start fob. Part #H001SAL100

8/10/15 2016 Outback and Legacy arriving on lots, but can't be delivered due to the Stop Sale recall. See below.

8/7/15 recall on the last 2015 and first 2016 Outbacks and Legacys built,  produced in July
2015 and 2016 Outback built July 3-25, 2015
2015 and 2016 Legacy built July 3-27, 2015

Due to a production problem on some (not all)  Outbacks and Legacys made in July, those vehicles cannot be delivered to owners. Its a Stop Sale recall which means affected cars cannot be sold.  It was a short three week period that these were made, but it means thats if you have a 2016 on order, it might have arrived but is sitting at the lot because it can't be delivered until the recall is performed.
Or it means that the ETA delivery date of the new car will be delayed and pushed back.
Please be patient.  Subaru will get replacement parts out as quickly as they can, and its better they fix them first before owners take possession.
"During the manufacturing process of the propeller shaft that connects to the vehicle's transmission, the seal cap and seal located inside the propeller shaft yoke may have been deformed. As a result, the seal may leak transmission fluid. If the transmission fluid leaks onto an exhaust pipe, there is a possible risk of fire. The propeller shaft will be replaced...
Parts will start to be distributed in mid August but initial supply will be limited..."
Cars already purchased, on the road and being driven will receive parts first.

5/21/15 2015 Outback, Legacy and Forester orders close Tuesday May 26 at 2pm EST.

At last, some news has been released, just as the national Subaru dealer meeting is ending.
No details or specs yet, but at least we know when the new 2016 models will be coming.

2016 model Outback, Legacy and Forester changes and prices will finally be announced in June, and 2016 orders will be available at that time with estimated delivery starting in August.

Its hard to make a great car better, but here's my 2016 Outback and Legacy wish list

Hopefully the 2016 Outback and Legacy will have
Rain sensing front wipers
Eyesight standard on all Limiteds
Passenger seat needs a  height adjustment
Limited model rear seat fan should have a fan speed adjustment
5 or 6 speed front wiper intermittent speeds- currently only 4 speeds.
Electric parking hill holder function should also set the parking brake when the car is put in park
Blind spot and rear cross traffic alert should be standard on all Premiums. Currently standard on Limiteds.
Climate control should have easier to read buttons and especially larger clock and outside temperature numbers
All models should have a lock/unlock Beep with on/off control. Currently only the Limited beeps when un/locked
The 3 year/36,000 mile warranty includes Roadside Assistance program which should include any Subaru the new owner has!
Easier to set power gate height control. It needs a knob or dial with low, medium, medium high, and high gate height settings. Plus add a manual open/close mode.
Drop the 6.2" radio completely, and make the 7" system standard on all models. Either that, or really improve the 6.2' audio system. The 7" system is significantly better than the 6.2"
More small accessories are needed to personalize a car: bring back optional under-car puddle lights, interior ambient and dash lights, factory front and rear bumper corner anti-scuff moldings, front hood protector etc etc
Keyless access fobs should each be a different color to help owners identify their key, and the key fobs need a simple Off/disable setting to lock it in a car when swimming etc instead of wrapping it in tin foil, or the impossible to use pin code access system.

5/14/15 Stitcher app added to the Subaru Starlink app for iPhone and Android

Stitcher, owned by international online content provider Deezer since October 2014,  is a podcast and news app that will automatically be updated to your Subaru Starlink app if you already have Starlink.
Stitcher includes news, podcasts and articles on current events, science, technology, sports, culture, music etc.
Starlink will automatically update if its on your phone already, or when you next use the app in your car.
To use Stitcher and select the programs you want to listen to, you need to go the stitcher.com website and log in with your facebook or google account or create an email account, and then choose your programs.

updated 12/22/14- front window noise issues
starting with October 10, 2014 production, changes were made to eliminate the wind noise from front windows in some Legacy and Outback made prior to 10/14/14
If a vehicle prior to those dates has wind noise, there is service bulletin #12-176-14 and  it can be fixed by replacing weatherstriping and the small triangular glass and weatherstrip. See your local dealer.

11/1/14 wind noise issues on some Legacy and Outback seem to be coming from the front doors corner window molding.

10/25/14  Outback and Legacy Premium and Limited audio systems have SiriusXM "Travel Link", which is sports, weather, gas station and stock market report information, its through XM and requires a paid subscription after the 4 free months that come with the car.

10/12/14

2015 Outback optional wheel arch moldings are smaller than previous years and do not fully cover the flat wheel arch area. The 15 wheel arch moldings are 2 1/4" wide. Previous year wheel arch moldings were 3" wide.

10/4/14
2015 Outback and Legacy- no hood protector will be available

10/4/14 availability of optional Outback and Legacy body side moldings.

There have been issues with the availability of side moldings
Available mid September: carbide gray, black, white, twilight blue, and wilderness green
Available late November: lapis blue, tungsten, venetian red, and ice silver

9/15/14 Bulletin #10-80-14 is a fix for a whistling wind sound from the front side air vents when they're almost fully closed on Legacy and Outback built prior to Sept 2014

9/4 Cars with optional Eyesight starting to arrive at dealers

new optional rear seatback protector has been upgraded, now attaches with velcro and elastic strips, without any grommets to break off like previous years
new Rearrangement of controls- the parking brake/hill assist and new X-mode buttons are in the center console, the Eyesight on/off buttons have been moved from the Eyesight unit to the driver control panel (by driver's left knee) along with the power gate and VDC on/off buttons.
new Upgraded touchscreen  audio infotainment systems including Subaru's Starlink smartphone integration with Aha, Pandora, iHeart radio, XM, 2 USB ports, SMS text messaging,
new Upgraded Harman Kardon system with 576w amp, 12 speakers
new Pin Code Access. Keyless Access/Pushbutton Start now includes Pin Code Access, a back-up system so you can get into the car when you don't have one of the keyless access fobs. It doesn't start the car, just unlocks it. To use it, you have to program in a series of 5 digits by tapping the rear gate lock button the same number of times as each of the 5 digits. (ie twice for 2, four times for 4, five times for the digit 5, and this is done for each of the 5 digits you programmed in). Then you tap the gate button in the same series of numbers to unlock the car. Its hard to program and use this because 5 is too many digits. In my opinion, it would be better if the Pin Code Access was only 2 digits- 2 would be much easier to do and still provide security against someone trying to randomly tap the code

Colors
new Lapis Blue Pearl, Wilderness Green Metallic. Crystal White Pearl
Crystal Black, Twilight Blue, Venetian Red, Crystal White available with either ivory or black cloth or leather
new Eyesight is now available with Black exterior
Gone Deep Indigo, Cypress Green, Satin White,

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THE 2015 OUTBACK

random thoughts on where its been and where its going, or been down so long it looks like up to me
(subject to whim and change)

Overall, its an excellent upgrade, a more refined ride (thanks Toyota for setting the standard), with some good and some fun new features, improved safety, comfort, look...
I appreciate that starting costs on a nicely equipped all wheel drive 2.5i model are in the very reasonable low $24000s (mid $24000 with PZEV), and that includes destination.
While its still a practical all-wheel-drive, go-anywhere car, it's becoming more luxurious and moving away from the long-time Subaru, all around family car, and general, get dirty, utility vehicle. This is necessary as safety and economy standards and buyers expectations, all rise.
Everyone has to come to their own conclusions though.

Good

> This is a major upgrade over the 2014 and previous models. But they are getting bigger and not everyone will like that.
> Its all much quieter and smoother- ride, transmission, engine etc.
> Acceleration is better and smoother with a more responsive and quieter CVT transmission. No more obvious CVT whine.
> Ergonomics are improved and more natural - the parking brake moved to center console where it should be, the cupholders are better positioned (but still not great) etc. Not all is perfect but it's better than previous models.

> Tilting front headrests
> Roof rack tie downs. Yes!
> Eyesight on/off and sound settings are easier to use
> Rear seat cargo area fold-down handles are convenient
> Phone pairing includes downloading your contact list/phone book
> Door grab handles and center console armrest are easy to clean
> Heated seats- now three front settings, and two rear. The heated rear seats is all new!
> Ivory interior now with dark carpets, door sills, and lower door panels so wont show much dirt!
> Blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert functions are all new. Standard on Limiteds, optional on Premiums
> Seat cushion airbags to stop front seat driver and passenger from sliding forward. I like this new airbag better than the driver knee airbag on Forester/Impreza
> Automatic parking brake is on/off silently now, without the 'grrr' sound of previous years, and it also releases faster than previous years when the gas pedal is pressed.
> Power memory seat on all Limiteds. Finally! 2 memory settings for seat position, height, and seatback adjustments. This is long overdue. Maybe next year memory settings will include the outside mirrors and lumbar support, both which also change from driver to driver. And with optional Keyless Access (also Limiteds only), the two key fobs can be paired to the two memory seat positions so when the door is opend the seat moves to the position paired with the fob.
> Rear view back-up camera is much improved and easier to see. It would be nice if there was a beeper at 6" when a parking bump is imminent (but one must wonder if a big camera display isn't enough and a beeper is needed to warn of impact, should they be backing up at all)
> Turn signal changes. Yes, its the little things that count. The turn signal sound is now a nicer, deeper tock-tock-tock than the previous tick-tick-tick. I think it will be easier for people to hear. Plus a gentle tap of the turn signal stalk now gives has a quick 3 blinks which means it doesn't have to stay on for miles if you can't hear it or don't pay attention to the instrument panel.
> Stereo systems all much better, especially on Premium and Limited models. Navigation models are lacking decent sound equalizer adjustments (only have base/mid/treble adj). The station pre-set list includes AM//FM/XM in one scrolling list which is convenient but it would be nice if XM setting identified the station. But with Pandora and Aha, XM is only free for 4 months, and so it might not be a big issue for many owners.
> Infotainment screen and displays are attractive and easy to use. Maintenance reminders are easy to set. Weather, sport, gas station and stock market functions are gimmicky but frankly I like them though they require an XM subscription to work
> Instrument panel has a center LCD display that shows the speed. Its much easier to see this digital display than the cramped speedometer markings, and the way police like to ticket for barely going over the speed limit its nice to have that speed displayed. It would be nice to have an easy-to-set speed alert button that would beep beyond a set limit for the lead-foot driver.

Bad or Wanted

suggestion regarding roadside assistance: the 3 year/36000 mile warranty on a new Subaru includes free roadside assistance. It would be appropriate if this roadside assistance was extended to any other Subaru the new buyer owns. This would increase the usefulness and value of the roadside assistance program which is generally overlooked by owners, and also of Subaru's support for older Subarus the person owns.

> Still no rain sensing front wipers
or a cold/ice sensing front wiper de-icer settings
> Passenger seat still needs height adjustment
> Needs separate rear seat ac fan up/down speed control
> Cargo area subfloor storage is shallower and less useful than previous models
> USB and aux jacks are at the back of the center console and too hard to find and use
> The variable speed front windshield wipers need more than only 4 settings plus low and high
|
> Upgrade the base model's 6.2" audio system. Its not very good at all. Some of the controls are harder to use than they should, especially considering how good the 7" system.
> Wind noise- a faint wind noise is audible and not terrible and one gets used to it but is annoying- this has been fixed starting with mid October 2014 production
> A third interior color on a small production model like the 2013/14 Special Appearance Package's brown leather
> Tiny and easy to miss clock and outside temperature displays in the climate control. Really, they are way too small.
> Subaru roadside assistance is included in the 3yr/36,000 mile warranty and it would be nice if it covered any Subaru the buyer owns
> Radio- harmon/kardon upgraded audio only has basic adjustments for base, mid range, and high settings. No equalizer. Very disappointing
> Front seat cupholders don't work well with bottles, mugs, or larger to go cups, but they are better positioned than the 2014 and previous years
> The weather, sports, gas station, and stock market info in Premium and Limited model audio systems requires an XM subscription, its only free for 4 months
> Parking brake and hill holder function- When the hill holder function is turned on, the parking brake activates when the car stops on a hill. It should also activate any time the CVT is put in Park..
> All climate control buttons are still too small except for Mode. The unit is larger but except for the mode button, all others are still too small and require the driver to look away from the road to find.
> Limited model's 18" wheels look nice but scrape curbs easily, tires are expensive to replace, and the bigger wheel can gather more snow in deep snow driving. When will this wheel size race end...
> Cargo cover still not well designed to work with the independently reclined rear seats. That part needs two separate cargo cover sections that clip onto the rear seat headrests and then adjust with the seat back
> SRF steering responsive fog lights are part of the Eyesight package. They only work when the headlight are in 'Auto" (dusk to dawn) mode. They should work any time the headlights are on, esp in the 'On' Setting
> Ambient lights- yes there are lights in the overhead console, front center console and door handles (exc base model), but where are all the optional ambient lights for front and rear cupholders, footwells, and door sills etc
> When will Subaru go back to having a true auto-on headlight setting where the lights are automatically on whenever the engine is on, and off when the engine is turned off. The setting now has the headlights on when the key is in or out of the ignition cylinder, and having the engine On setting would be much better.
> Subaru provides 3 standard keys or 2 keyless access/pushbutton start fobs and they need to add a flat, small, weatherproof key that will only open the door so all the active skiers, swimmers, biker riders, hikers will have a key to carry when out and about.
> The Limited driver's seat has two memory settings, and with optional pushbutton start the two key fobs can be linked to the seat positions so the seat automatically goes to that seat when the door it opened. It would be helpful if the two key fobs were slightly different, if for example the unlock button which is a Subaru logo had one fob with a blue background and one fob had a different background color.
> the Pin Code Access with pushbutton start is very hard to program and use. It can be frustrating to tap this small, hard to see button correctly in a series of 5 multiple taps. The solution is for the Pin Code Access to only be two digits. Two would be much easier to do and still provide security against someone trying to randomly tap the code
> Puddle lights- previous 2010-2014 undercarriage puddle lights were popular but were recalled for water issues, and the new outside mirror approach lights are nice, but I did like the undercarriage puddle lights, and it would be great if both mirror and undercarriage lights were available. Or add a down-light to the bottom of the outside mirrors, to the underside of the mirrors, in addition to the door handle approach light.
> Power Gate- the new for 2015 Power rear gate is convenient but the memory height setting is way too complicated, though it is easier than the Forester's (the Foresters is impossible). The Outback still has 2 buttons, one to open/close, and one to set the height. The height control on/off button doesn't indicate if its on or off except by feel or carefully looking to see if its pushed in or not. There should just be simple off-low-medium-high dial to set the memory height or turn off the power gate function altogether so it can be opened manually. Yes, there should be a way to manually open the power gate in an emergency without crawling into the cargo area and popping out the little access door. There should just be a way to disable the power function so it can be opened/closed manually.

2015 MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
subject to change, correction, updates. Tips and corrections welcomed

see your local servicing dealer for full details and coverage on your specific car
-
full maintenance schedule

Break-in period for the first 1000 miles
Don't race the engine, keep RPMs under 4,000 for the most part and vary the speeds with normal city and highway driving.
The first oil change is required at 6000 miles or 6 months. Its recommended to check it every few months

Always....
Always let a cold engine briefly idle as the oil circulates.
Avoid hard acceleration on a cold engine.
Check the oil between changes

Service schedule

Oil-
2.5L models- 0w-20 synthetic oil is required.

3.6L models- 5w-30, regular oil is ok, synthetic is recommended

Note  new on all 2015 models 1st oil and all subsequent oil change required at or by every 6,000 miles or 6 months.  The 2014 oil change interval was 7,500 miles or 7 mos.
Its a good idea to check the oil between changes.
6 months or 6000 miles is the minimum oil change interval required. Under severe, hard, very cold or very hot weather driving, change it more frequently.

from the owners manual
Some engine oil will be consumed while driving. Under the following conditions, oil consumption can be increased and thus require refilling between maintenance intervals:
> When the engine is new and within the break-in period
> When the engine oil is of lower quality
> When the incorrect oil viscosity is used
> When engine braking is employed
> When the engine is operated at high engine speeds
> When the engine is operated under heavy loads
> When towing a trailer
> When the engine idles for long periods of time
> When the vehicle is operated in stop and go and/or heavy traffic situations
> When the vehicle is used under severe thermal conditions
> When the vehicle accelerates and decelerates frequently
Under these or similar conditions, you should check your oil at least every 2nd fuel fill-up and change your engine oil more frequently. If your oil consumption rate is greater than 1 quart every 1,200 miles or 1 liter every 2,000 kilometers, contact your Subaru dealer who may perform a test under controlled conditions.

Oil and filter change:  every 6 months or 6,000 miles
Cabin air filter every 12mos/12,000 miles
Tire rotations: every 6-10,000 miles. Equal tread required at all corners. Tires, wheels FAQ
Timing chain all Outbacks have a timing chain - no replacement needed

6,000 miles/6 mos
oil and filter change, rotate tires
12,000 miles/12 mos inspection, tire rotation, cabin air filter,
18,000 miles/18 mos oil and filter change, rotate tires
24,000 miles/24 mos  inspection, oil and filter change, rotate tires, cabin air filter
30,000 mile replace engine air filters, brake fluid, and gear fluid as needed,
oil and filter change, rotate tires
36,000 miles/36 mos oil and filter change, rotate tires, cabin air filter
42,000 miles/42 mos  oil and filter change, rotate tires, cabin air filter
48,000 miles/48 mos oil and filter change, rotate tires, cabin air filter
60,000 miles/60 mos repeat 30,000 service, replace spark plugs/wires
90,000 miles/90 mos service with complete fluid, filter change. Inspect all hoses, belts
120,000 miles/120 mos repeat 30,000 service, replace spark plugs
137,500 miles replace Super Coolant Radiator Fluid. The 1st replacement is 11 years, 137,500 miles, or 220,000Km. The 2nd replacement is 6yrs, 75,000 miles

CVT Transmission: Life Time CVT oil should not need to be replaced unless driven under hard conditions, towing etc-change every 24,855 miles. Note- there is no CVT oil dipstick.
Radiator fluid is Super Coolant, with 11 year, 137,500 mile replacement schedule.

SAFETY  - 2015 OUTBACK

subject to change, correction, updates. Tips and corrections welcomed

Subaru Mobile-It-Ease program helps modify vehicles for special needs drivers. More info here

All Wheel Drive- upgraded for 2015 with Active Torque Vectoring
Full time all wheel drive. new for 2015 with Active Torque Vectoring (modulates inner front wheel when vehicle is turning)
new for 2015 Rear Vehicle Detection System
standard on Limiteds, optional on Premiums
all new for 2015 and first for Subaru
package includes Lane Change Assist (warns of vehicles approaching in the next lane), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (warns of vehicles approaching when you're backing out of a parking spot) and Blind Spot Detection (BSD)
The Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection (SRVD) system uses two radar units, each mounted underneath the sheet metal immediately below the rear taillights. To help avoid damage, the radar units are purposely mounted above the typical bumper impact line.
The radar units send out signals to detect vehicles behind and to each side of the Subaru vehicle, especially those vehicles that might not be visible in the rearview mirrors.
Lane Change Assist (LCA) looks for vehicles farther back in an adjacent lane – about 220 feet behind the Subaru vehicle. If the vehicle detected is approaching quickly – at a speed that could bring it alongside the Subaru vehicle within a few seconds – Lane Change Assist will illuminate a warning icon in the exterior mirror on that side. If the driver signals a lane change, the warning icon in the mirror will flash rapidly.
Blind Spot Detection (BSD) is standard on Limiteds, optional on Premiums. It will illuminate a warning icon in the exterior mirror when it detects a vehicle alongside and behind the Subaru vehicle in an area of about 22 feet x 11 feet. If the driver signals a lane change to that side, the warning icon in the mirror will flash.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) uses the same radars and sensors to help detect vehicles that cannot be seen by the driver as they approach from either side. This is especially helpful when reversing from between two larger vehicles. The driver is alerted by a flashing icon in the appropriate exterior mirror, a flashing icon in the rear vision camera display, as well as an audible alert

Standard on Limited, optional on Premium
upgraded for 2015 Eyesight
new for 2015 3rd generation Eyesight (note- 1st gen Eyesight was never offered in the US)
active cruise control, lane departure warning, pre-collision warning and braking.  2015 Eyesight has smaller, less intrusive housing, color capable cameras, a longer and wider field of function, higher speed differential to 30mph (from 19mph on v. 1). On/off buttons moved to the driver control panel.
new for 2015 steering responsive fog lights- included with Eyesight- uses steering wheel position to briefly turn on the left or right fog light to illuminate a corner when the vehicle is turned. The fog lights have to be off for the system to turn them on.
> Active Cruise Control combines the benefits of cruise control with active monitoring of the road ahead. It issues warnings and activates automatic braking when needed. Adaptive Cruise Control can regulate vehicle speed in order to keep a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead. It does not replace conventional cruise control, which can still be used when desired.
> Pre-Collision Braking can recognize an impending collision, alert the driver and automatically apply the brakes to help avoid a collision or minimize the impact when a collision is inevitable.
> Pre-Collision Brake Assist-  If Eyesight recognizes an impending collision and the driver is applying the brakes but not with enough force, Pre-Collision Brake Assist automatically applies up to full braking pressure in order to try to shorten braking distances.
> Pre-Collision Throttle Management is designed to help prevent drivers from accelerating into a stopped vehicle or other obstacle in front of them. It warns the driver and reduces engine power until he or she applies the brakes to avoid an impact.
> Lead Vehicle Start Alert is a helpful EyeSight feature that alerts the driver when his or her vehicle remains stopped after a vehicle in front has started to move away.
> Lane Departure Warning alerts drivers when they unintentionally move out of their travel lane. It takes no corrective vehicle action other than issuing visual and audible warnings.
> Lane Sway Warning acts in a similar way, detecting unusual back and forth vehicle movement within the lane of travel. Lane Departure Warning works at all speeds, while Lane Sway Warning only operates at speeds over 32 mph.

Eyesight cars have three windshield washer squirters, with the middle one to clean in front of the cameras.
The camera’s field of view is about 35 degrees horizontally from the center of the windshield.
The camera’s field of vision extends up to about 360 feet in front of the vehicle, but objects very close to the vehicle may not be detected
EyeSight works to recognize obstacles up to about a 30-mph (or less) speed differential. Essentially, EyeSight needs time to recognize an object or potential obstacle. If the speed difference between the EyeSight vehicle and the object is greater than up to 30 mph, the object will likely not be detected.
Note- do not touch or try to clean the EyeSight camera lenses. It is imperative that extra precaution be used when cleaning the inside of the windshield, because over-spray from cleaners may impair or even damage the cameras’ lenses, which is not a warranty issue

Optional on Premium and Limited models
fuel cutoff system fuel cutoff system detects an airbag deployment and cuts off to minimize fire danger after an accident. (new on 2013)

Event Data Recorder (EDR)
EDR, Event Data Recorder information.
In the event of an impact, the EDR will freeze data including how various systems were operating, for example if seatbelts were buckled, if the gas or brake pedals were pressed, and vehicle speed. No personal data is stored. To read data, special equipment is required. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer (Subaru), other parties such as law enforcement that have the equipment can read the information if they have access to the vehicle or EDR.  Existing laws generally provide that information in an EDR is confidential and is the property of the owner of the motor vehicle. Information is accessed through the airbag system using a Subaru service computer.

Emissions
PZEV is required in  CA, CT, DE, MA, MD, ME, NJ, NY, OR, PA, RI, VT, WA
here is a brief, simple summary.
PZEV is Partial Zero Emission Vehicle.
The EPA says PZEV is the cleanest running gas car on today's market based on emissions testing for carbon-containing compounds, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, and other tailpipe nastiness.
What it does
1. A charcoal canister catches unburned gas left in the engine when it's turned off so it doesn't evaporate.
2. Fuel injectors close tighter when they're not in use.
3. It has a finer mesh in the catalytic converter, as well as optimized placement of precious metal.
4. The engine's electronic brain is set to run hotter at start up so the catalytic converter heats up faster.
PZEV is not available or required on the 3.6L
Brakes
upgraded for 2015 2.5L model
4 wheel disc, 4 channel anti-lock, low wear indicator
Brake override system stops car if both brake and gas pedals are pressed.
Brake assist for maximum brake pressure

front: 12.4 ventilated front disc with dual caliper piston
rear: 11.4 ventilated rear disc with single piston caliper

Electric parking brake with auto release and Hill Holder functions

new for 2015
Incline Start assist- briefly prevents the vehicle from rolling back as the driver moves their foot from the brake to the gas. Note- this is only for 1.5 seconds, and is not the same as the electric parking brake's Hill Holder function

(note: these are the same brakes as on the 2010-2014 3.6L models but they're new to the 2.5L.  The 2014 2.5L models were 11.6" vented front and 11.3" solid rear disc)
Parking brake
new for 2015- the electric parking brake button and Hill Holder buttons have been moved to the center console
All models use an Electric Parking Brake with Auto Release and Hill Holder.

Auto release function- wear seatbelt, step on brake pedal, put car in gear, lightly press gas pedal.
The system makes a mild sound as it activates or releases the brake so you know its working.

To use in as emergency brake lightly pull the parking brake up but only in an serious emergency when you cannot normally brake! This will cause your rear wheels to lock so be very careful.

Pull the brake button UP to activate the brakes, push it down to release them.

Hill Holder Brake system

hillholder function
If the Hill Holder function is turned on, when you restart the car it is on (new on 2013 model).
new for 2015, the Hill Holder button is on the center console
The Hill Holder brake system is standard on all models.
It uses the electric parking brake.
The system can be turned on by pressing the Hill Holder button in the center console.
A green image of a car on an incline is in the upper right dash comes on (see image).
When stopping on a hill 5% or steeper, either going forward up or backwards down a hill,  the Hill Holder activates the electric parking brake and holds the car from rolling.
Stepping on the gas releases the brake so the car will move.
Makes a mild sound as it activates or releases so you know its working
Works going up or backwards down an incline.
Note: if you are already stopped on an incline and did not press the Hill Holder button, press the Parking Brake button - it works exactly the same.

HD Radio is free. its a digital radio broadcast signal with 'subchannels' of the main channel you are listening to.
The ‘HD’ in ‘HD Radio’ is part of iBiquity Digital’s brand name for its digital AM and FM radio technology.
HD is not an acronym for either hybrid digital or high definition, it is simply the name for this technology.
HD Radio broadcasting is free, there are no subscription fees.
The HD channels are not particularly strong, so you might lose the signal in garages or in mountains or downtown between buildings.
The service includes iTunes Tagging which lets you capture information about a song on the radio and store it on your Apple device by pushing the "Tag" button on the HD Radio receiver. When your device is connected to iTunes, a list of tagged songs will appear which can be purchased.

new on 2015 Outback and Legacy- Pin Code Access
Requires Keyless Access with Pushbutton Start

What is it? A back-up unlock system so you can get into the car when you dont have a key fob handy. To use it, you have to program in a series of 5 digits by tapping the rear gate lock button the same number of times as each of the 5 digits. (ie twice for 2, four times for 4, five times for the digit 5, and this is done for each of the 5 digits you programmed in).
Then you can lock and unlock the door by tapping the rear gate lock button repeatedly in the series that you programmed in.

Note- the PIN Code Access is rather difficult to do... it can be frustrating to tap this small, hard to see button correctly in a series of 5 multiple taps.
The solution is for the Pin Code Access to only be two digits. Two would be much easier to do and still provide security against someone trying to randomly tap the code

Preparation to register a 5-digit security Pin Code
1. Close all doors including rear gate.
2. Press and hold the button on the access key. Then all doors, including rear gate, will be locked.
3. Keep the button pressed, and press the rear lock button on the gate within 5 seconds after step 2.
4. Press and hold the rear lock button on the gate for more than 5 seconds. Then a chirp will sound.
5. Press the button on the access key while the chirp sounds. Then the chirp will stop and the preparation is complete

For example, to register 32468 as the PIN code, perform the following procedure on an Outback
1. Press the rear lock button three times.
2. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button twice.
3. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button four times.
4. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button six times.
5. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button eight times.
6. Perform steps 1 to 5 again within approximately 30 seconds after the buzzer starts sounding intermittently.
7. All doors (including rear gate) will be unlocked and locked.
Then the PIN code will be registered.

If you make an error during the registration procedure, open the driver’s door and then close it.
Then start over from the procedure described in Preparation above
To protect your vehicle from theft, you cannot register 5 digit codes such as 00000, 11111 to 99999, or 12345.
Do not register your vehicle license plate number or simple numbers such as11122 or 12121.

You cannot unlock by PIN Code Access in the following cases
- when the access key is within the operating ranges
- when the ignition switch is in the ACC or ON position
- If you make an operation error during the unlocking procedure, start over with the unlocking procedure after waiting for 5 seconds or longer.
- To protect your vehicle from theft, a buzzer will sound if incorrect PIN codes are entered five times continuously. If this occurs, you cannot unlock the doors by PIN Code Access for 5 minutes.

NOTE

disable the Outback and Legacy keyless access proximity key in order to hide it in the car when camping, swimming, skiing, biking: remove the emergency key to carry with you to get back in the car (yes the alarm will go off when you open the door until you unwrap the proximity key), wrap the proximity key in foil, then hide it and hope no one finds it and steals the car.
