2019 is the final year for this version. The 2020 Outback will be all new.

All models get Eyesight as a standard feature.
Option Package #s and content have changed because Eyesight is now standard.
The 3.6L engine continues to be available though it might be phased out early and not produced for the entire year. It will be replaced by the 2.4 turbo in the 2019 Ascent
Starlink connected emergency services remain the same (it does not get the new system used in the 2019 Ascent, Crosstrek, and Impreza)

Standard on all models- thin frame auto dimming rear view mirror with compass/Homelink

Dropped: the moonroof is no longer standard on Limited models. It is included in Option Pkg #24 with navigation, steering responsive LED headlights, High beam assist, and Reverse auto brake.

Dropped: Premium Option Package #12 with moonroof and power gate has been dropped. Moonroof is still available with Premium Package #15

New colors: cinnamon (chocolate) brown and abyss blue pearl.
Dropped colors: deep blue, and twilight blue

Good and Bad
these are opinions
disclosure- I traded in a 2017 Outback 2.5 Touring to lease a 2018 3.6 Touring.  For me it was an excellent upgrade.

Small details..  owning a car means the small details become important. In a few years, this new technology on the 18s means they will hold their value better and be an easier sale than the (soon to be) dated technology on the 17 and prior models. Of course, new models and new features should always be better, and in this case they are.

Good (an opinion)

> Climate Control on Premium, Limited, and Touring  The soft white lettering against the black background on the 18s is easier to see even in daylight. That was a serious problem on the 15-17 because in the daytime with headlights on, the climate control thin red lettering against a silver background was very hard to see.
The new, large dual front zone temperature control knobs show their individual temperature setting, and the larger clock, fan speed, and outside temperature displays are clean and easy to see at a glance.
> Large and brighte blind spot warning lights are easy to see.. Blind spot detection is a safety feature that driver's use every time they're in the car and now it's better than before
> Back-up camera display with active steering path lines. They take getting used to but are very helpful.
> Power off delay for audio and window functions
> Automatic door lock and unlock (usually works but not always).
> Individual tire pressure readings (long overdue).

Bad (or not so good)
(more opinions)
If Subaru wants to appeal to the $30,000+ car buyer, it needs a car with more creature and convenience features

> Extremely glitchy 8" audio system, prone to black screen and other failures such volume control failure, screen freeze, map freeze etc. Its not an everyday thing but it does happen.
When the screen goes black it might work if you wait 5 or 10 minutes and restart the car. Or disconnect the battery and wait a few minutes.
Also, there's no volume correction when switching the various audio sources so switching from one source to another might result in sudden shockingly loud volume. Be sure to turn the volume down prior to changing the audio source. When everything works, its fine, but its not a dependable system.

> The front wipers have only 4 variable speeds, plus low and high. There should be at least 5 variable speeds. One more speed would make a difference, at least when it semi-rains here in the NW.
> Still no way to manually open/close the power rear gate (safety issue)
> Rear gate height setting control is still too complex. Why not keep it simple and just have low, medium, high and full height selection?
> No rain sensing wipers. For a car intended for all weather conditions, its silly not to have it.
> Passenger seat still not height adjustable! Passengers, tell Subaru to fix this. Call 800 Subaru3.
> With pushbutton start, both key fobs are identical. They should have colored buttons to differentiate them since the key can move the driver's seat to a pre-set position.
>The Eyesight cameras work very well but are susceptible to dust and dirt because the lens are not covered or protected and can't be cleaned! Eventually car reviewers and testing agencies will take notice.
> Needs quad sun visors. The 2 small sun visors are not up to the task, and there's only one per side so when its moved to the window to block the sun, there's nothing to block the windshield, so the occupant is swinging the visor back and forth (front to side, front to side etc) on sunny days. Quad sun visors were on cars 25 years ago...
> The Vehicle Monitor in the Car Info tab gives you a choice to
display two out of four gauges. The four choices are instant economy, oil temp, average speed, and Accelerator Valve Opening (% of throttle) and  there's no reason at all for all four gauges not being shown. Plus the accelerator valve opening is something few people care about.  What people who care about engine info want is oil and coolant temp, instant and average fuel economy, average speed, distance to empty, vehicle altitude...

2019 MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
subject to change, correction, updates. Tips and corrections welcomed

see your local servicing dealer for full details and coverage on your specific car
-
full maintenance schedule

Break-in period for the first 1000 miles
Don't race the engine, keep RPMs under 4,000 for the most part and vary the speeds with normal mix of city and highway driving.

The first oil change is required at 6000 miles or 6 months. Its recommended to check the oil between changes.

from the owner's manual
Some engine oil will be consumed while driving. Under the following conditions, oil consumption can be increased and thus require refilling between maintenance intervals:
> When the engine is new and within the break-in period
> When the engine oil is of lower quality
> When the incorrect oil viscosity is used
> When engine braking is employed
> When the engine is operated at high engine speeds
> When the engine is operated under heavy loads
> When towing a trailer
> When the engine idles for long periods of time
> When the vehicle is operated in stop and go and/or heavy traffic situations
> When the vehicle is used under severe thermal conditions
> When the vehicle accelerates and decelerates frequently
Under these or similar conditions, you should check your oil at least every 2nd fuel fill-up and change your engine oil more frequently. If your oil consumption rate is greater than 1 quart every 1,200 miles or 1 liter every 2,000 kilometers, contact your Subaru dealer who may perform a test under controlled conditions.

Always....
Always let a cold engine idle as the oil circulates.
Avoid hard acceleration on a cold engine.
Check the oil between changes

Service schedule
With severe or hard/hot/cold/dusty/towing conditions, shorten the service intervals

Blind Spot Detection and Rear Vehicle Detection System

standard on Limited and Touring, optional on Premium
(first offered on the 2015 Outback and Legacy)

standard on Limited and Touring,
optional on Premium

The Blind Spot Detection symbol is now in the outside mirror's housing and larger and brighter than previous models

The Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection (SRVD) system uses two radar units, each mounted underneath the sheet metal immediately below the rear taillights. To help avoid damage, the radar units are purposely mounted above the typical bumper impact line.
The radar units send out signals to detect vehicles behind and to each side of the Subaru vehicle, especially those vehicles that might not be visible in the rearview mirrors.

Blind Spot Detection (BSD) detects a vehicle alongside and/or slightly to the rear of you,
Lane Change Assist warns of vehicles approaching in the next lane,
Rear Cross Traffic Alert warns of vehicles approaching when you're backing out of a parking spot.

Lane Change Assist (LCA) looks for vehicles farther back in an adjacent lane – about 220 feet behind the Subaru vehicle. If the vehicle detected is approaching quickly – at a speed that could bring it alongside the Subaru vehicle within a few seconds – Lane Change Assist will illuminate a warning icon in the exterior mirror on that side. If the driver signals a lane change, the warning icon in the mirror will flash rapidly.
Blind Spot Detection (BSD) is standard on Limiteds, optional on Premiums. It will illuminate a warning icon in the outside mirror's housing when it detects a vehicle alongside and behind the Subaru vehicle in an area of about 22 feet x 11 feet. If the driver signals a lane change to that side, the warning icon in the mirror will flash.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) uses the same radars and sensors to help detect vehicles that cannot be seen by the driver as they approach from either side. This is especially helpful when reversing from between two larger vehicles. The driver is alerted by a flashing icon in the appropriate exterior mirror, a flashing icon in the rear vision camera display, as well as an audible alert

Standard on Limited and Touring, optional on Premium
Eyesight

Eyesight

Eyesight

Eyesight

new for 2019- now standard on all 2019 Outbacks

Eyesight uses two forward facing cameras to see the road ahead, and only works when they can 'see', so don't block the camera's views, put anything reflective on the dash, hang anything from the rear view mirror, or clean the dash so that it's shiny and reflects on the inside of the windshield. Replace the windshield wipers as necessary.
The Eyesight cameras will turn off if the windshield fogs up or they can't see for any reason.

Do not touch or try to clean the EyeSight camera lenses. It is important to use careful when cleaning the inside of the windshield because over-spray from spray cleaners may impair or damage the cameras’ lenses, which is not a warranty issue.

This is the 5th year for the 3rd generation Eyesight on the Outback

Eyesight has two small, forward facing cameras on either side of the rear view mirror.

New for 2019- Eyesight is now standard on all Outbacks

> LED headlights, Steering Responsive
Standard on all Touring and included on Limited models with Option Pkg #24. Not available on Premiums.
LED headlights have a clean bright light, Steering responsive turns the headlights slightly with the steering wheel.

Steering responsive fog lights are included on Premium with optional Eyesight. Not available on other models.
> High Beam Assist-
Standard on Touring and optional on Premium and Limited.
Switches headlight high beams to low beams when it seen an approaching car when you have the high beams on (was new on 2017 models).

Eyesight High Beam Assist sensor on Limited and Touring is now integrated into the Eyesight cameras.
Premium models still have the large center sensor in front of the rear view mirror that was also on the 17 Limited and Touring

>  Lane Keep Assist uses the car's electric power steering to help keep the car in its lane at highway speeds over 40mph. (was new on the 2016 model)
Note: t
his function has a steering wheel switch and can be turned on/off by the driver.
When turned on, Lane Keep Assist will continue to be on when the car is re-started so no longer needs to be turned on each time the car is restarted (staying on was new starting on 2018s)
> Active Cruise Control combines the benefits of cruise control with active monitoring of the road ahead. It issues warnings and activates automatic braking when needed. Adaptive Cruise Control can regulate vehicle speed in order to keep a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead. It does not replace conventional cruise control, which can still be used when desired.
> Pre-Collision Braking can recognize an impending collision, alert the driver and automatically apply the brakes to help avoid a collision or minimize the impact when a collision is inevitable.
> Pre-Collision Brake Assist-  If Eyesight recognizes an impending collision and the driver is applying the brakes but not with enough force, Pre-Collision Brake Assist automatically applies up to full braking pressure in order to try to shorten braking distances.
> Pre-Collision Throttle Management is designed to help prevent drivers from accelerating into a stopped vehicle or other obstacle in front of them. It warns the driver and reduces engine power until he or she applies the brakes to avoid an impact.
> Lead Vehicle Start Alert is a helpful EyeSight feature that alerts the driver when his or her vehicle remains stopped after a vehicle in front has started to move away.
> Lane Departure Warning alerts drivers when they unintentionally move out of their travel lane. It takes no corrective vehicle action other than issuing visual and audible warnings.
> Lane Sway Warning acts in a similar way, detecting unusual back and forth vehicle movement within the lane of travel. Lane Departure Warning works at all speeds, while Lane Sway Warning only operates at speeds over 32 mph.

Eyesight cars have three windshield washer squirters, with the middle one to clean in front of the cameras.
The camera’s field of view is about 35 degrees horizontally from the center of the windshield.
The camera’s field of vision extends up to about 360 feet in front of the vehicle, but objects very close to the vehicle may not be detected
Eyesight works to recognize obstacles up to about a 30-mph (or less) speed differential. Essentially, EyeSight needs time to recognize an object or potential obstacle. If the speed difference between the EyeSight vehicle and the object is greater than up to 30 mph, the object will likely not be detected in time for Eyesight to stop the car, ie a car at 60mph running into a wall for example. At 60mph, by the time Eyesight sees and recognizes the stopped object, there wont be time or distance to fully stop the car.

Reverse Automatic Braking Reverse Automatic braking-  standard on Touring models, included with Option Pkg #24 on Limited models. Not available on Premium models.

4 sensors in the back bumper detect close objects when you're in reverse at very low speed (5mph or less).
With a beep function as the object gets closer
(was new on 2017 models)

Event Data Recorder (EDR)
EDR, Event Data Recorder information.
In the event of an impact, the EDR will freeze data including how various systems were operating, for example if seatbelts were buckled, if the gas or brake pedals were pressed, and vehicle speed. No personal data is stored. To read data, special equipment is required. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer (Subaru), other parties such as law enforcement that have the equipment can read the information if they have access to the vehicle or EDR.  Existing laws generally provide that information in an EDR is confidential and is the property of the owner of the motor vehicle. Information is accessed through the airbag system using a Subaru service computer.

Safety Plus and Security Plus
(was new on the 2016 model)

if you have a

Outback Premium, Limited, Touring
note: not on base Outback 2,5i

Helps with notification in an emergency accident/collision, if you're locked out, lost, car is stolen, broken down, with emergency services, and with mechanical issues and notification.

Important Note- this system does NOT work if the car's battery is dead, so in the event of a dead battery or an accident where the battery is dislodged, have your cellphone handy because the Starlink won't work.

There are 3 SiriusXM staffed call centers in the U.S. (in Texas and Utah)
AT&T provides the cellular service for emergency (red SOS button) and user requested roadside assistance (blue button) services via an integrated 4G phone connection. The phone has a lithium backup battery so it has power in the event of an accident. The red and blue buttons are in the overhead console. The car does need to be in an area with AT&T cell coverage for the connection to work (check coverage at http://att.com/maps/wireless-coverage.html).
Sirius/XM provides the telematics

Android and Apple phones use the Starlink app for infotainment, and then either the MySubaru app or online at MySubaru.com for connected vehicle services and account information.
So if you have an iphone or android, download both the Subaru Starlink and MySubaru apps

Outback and Legacy- Pin Code Access
Requires Keyless Access with Pushbutton Start

What is it? A back-up unlock system so you can get into the car when you dont have a key fob handy. To use it, you have to program in a series of 5 digits by tapping the rear gate lock button the same number of times as each of the 5 digits. (ie twice for 2, four times for 4, five times for the digit 5, and this is done for each of the 5 digits you programmed in).
Then you can lock and unlock the door by tapping the rear gate lock button repeatedly in the series that you programmed in.

Note- the PIN Code Access is rather difficult to do... it can be frustrating to tap this small, hard to see button correctly in a series of 5 multiple taps.
The solution is for the Pin Code Access to only be two digits. Two would be much easier to do and still provide security against someone trying to randomly tap the code

Preparation to register a 5-digit security Pin Code
1. Close all doors including rear gate.
2. Press and hold the button on the access key. Then all doors, including rear gate, will be locked.
3. Keep the button pressed, and press the rear lock button on the gate within 5 seconds after step 2.
4. Press and hold the rear lock button on the gate for more than 5 seconds. Then a chirp will sound.
5. Press the button on the access key while the chirp sounds. Then the chirp will stop and the preparation is complete

For example, to register 32468 as the PIN code, perform the following procedure on an Outback
1. Press the rear lock button three times.
2. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button twice.
3. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button four times.
4. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button six times.
5. After a buzzer (ding) sounds once, press the rear lock button eight times.
6. Perform steps 1 to 5 again within approximately 30 seconds after the buzzer starts sounding intermittently.
7. All doors (including rear gate) will be unlocked and locked.
Then the PIN code will be registered.

If you make an error during the registration procedure, open the driver’s door and then close it.
Then start over from the procedure described in Preparation above
To protect your vehicle from theft, you cannot register 5 digit codes such as 00000, 11111 to 99999, or 12345.
Do not register your vehicle license plate number or simple numbers such as11122 or 12121.

You cannot unlock by PIN Code Access in the following cases
- when the access key is within the operating ranges
- when the ignition switch is in the ACC or ON position
- If you make an operation error during the unlocking procedure, start over with the unlocking procedure after waiting for 5 seconds or longer.
- To protect your vehicle from theft, a buzzer will sound if incorrect PIN codes are entered five times continuously. If this occurs, you cannot unlock the doors by PIN Code Access for 5 minutes.

NOTE

disable the Outback and Legacy keyless access proximity key in order to hide it in the car when camping, swimming, skiing, biking: remove the emergency key to carry with you to get back in the car (yes the alarm will go off when you open the door until you unwrap the proximity key), wrap the proximity key in foil, then hide it and hope no one finds it and steals the car.

How to order a Subaru

Subarus are popular cars, sometimes the car you want isn't on the lot.
And some models can very very difficult to get.
That's pretty common with Subaru.
Hopefully there's more than one color or model you'll be happy with.

But... when there's no car, the choices are:
waiting and hoping the right car shows up one day,
compromising on what you want,

your dealer finds and can get a car from another local dealer
(but they're hard to get everyplace)

or .... you factory order what you want!

Its all easy.
Here's how it works

You and the salesperson work through the model, option package, color, and accessories, and agree on a price for the car.
Placing the order is easy - dealers have access to Subaru's quick online form. Its just a few fast, simple, pages.
The order form needs the details on the car, and the buyer's name, address, phone and email.
Yes, Subaru expects the dealer to collect a deposit when the order is placed.

When a car is ordered
Orders are allocated in the beginning of the month and take around 2 full months, but it depends on the model and it can be shorter or longer.
When an order is placed, the dealer will get a VON- vehicle order number- unless there's a car already in the system that can be adapted to fit the order and then there might be a VIN.
ETA- estimated time of arrival-, the usual fresh order ETA will probably be a generic "last week of (month)" which will generally be the end of the 2nd full month after the order is placed.
The ETA will change as time passes, and eventually there will be a VIN and an exact ETA date, though that date is subject to, and frequently does, change.

Please be sure this is the right car and you're willing to wait. Cancelled orders can affect a dealer's supply.
Your dealer or salesperson should check the ETA from time to time and notify you of any changes.
The dealer wants you to get the car as soon as possible but doesn't control the ETA.

The car arrives with protective plastic on the upper surfaces. The dealer service dept will need to do a PDI (pre-delivery inspection), and then the car will be cleaned for the agreed pick-up time.

Note that Interest rates and lease programs are what is current when the car is picked up and contracts signed, when its actually purchased, not when the car is ordered. Subaru announces interest rates and lease programs monthly. And trade values can change over the order time. The trade will be checked when the purchase is completed. Subaru's GTP - guaranteed trade program - is good for late model Subaru trade-ins. Its on www.Subaru.com > for owners. Have your VIN handy.

And you'll get the car you want!
