Subaru sold 177,138 cars
in 1987.
The 1987 GL 3 door hatchback
had 8.3" of ground clearance and on-demand hi/lo 4wd.
The car was rated at 24/28
mpg. It it was available now (December 2012), with safety updates, would
you buy it or... wait, is that the Impreza Crosstrek with 8"+ ground
clearance due next fall?
1987 GL 3 door hatchback:
reportedly the orignal MSRP was $8,293. 4 speed manual transmission.
157.3" long, 8.3" ground clearance, dual hi/lo range on-demand 4wd, 73
horsepower, fuel economy rating 24/28 (24/29 in California), curb weight
2240 pounds, no power steering, no power windows, locks, mirrors
or brakes etc, with no airbags, no anti-lock brakes.
Compare that to a
2012 Impreza 5 door:
original MSRP $18,225 incl destination and PZEV emissions. 5 speed
transmission. 173.8" long, 5.7" ground clearance (5.9" Sport), full time
all wheel drive, 148 horsepower, fuel economy rating 25/33, curb weight
2910 pounds, power steering, power windows, locks, mirrors, brakes etc,
with 7 airbags plus stability and traction control. (2012
