can anyone tell me the differance between a 97 and 98 trans for a legacy outback with 2.5 ltr? junkyard says 98 won't work in 97, dealer don't know what works because of part number, and tranny shops tell me it will work. what is the differance in the two? and who do i listen to? its a big job to do to find out its wrong. help please. i need my car back. thanks

They might have different final drive ratios. Somewhere I have a spreadsheet that has tons of Subaru transmission part #'s and what the final drive ratios are.

If they have different final drive ratios, you can still use it, but you have to get the rear differential from the donor car as well. Otherwise you'll end up with major torque bind and will damage the transfer clutch in the trans.
