Anyone know which rental companies offer Subaru's - i have read numerous posts (elsewhere) about experience renting them and figured what better way to test drive than rent one for a couple days

I am in Minneapolis, MN

within minutes, answering my own question but in case others need this info

8. Where can I rent a Subaru vehicle?
Typically, Subaru vehicles can be rented in the following areas with the following rental companies. This information is subject to change, however.

* Dollar Rent-A-Car - Seattle and Portland, WA
* Hertz Rental - All major airports in the northern half of the United States
* Avis Rental - Primarily in Chicago area
* Budget Rental - Small availability in northern New Jersey

found here: http://www.subaru.com/common/faq/index.jsp#8

now to see if they have an LL Bean Edition...

The rental fleets are where most of the 1-2 year old used ones on the market come from. They're sold by the rental company at auctions.
Almost are the standard 4 cylinder Outbacks, with some Legacy sedans and wagons, Foresters (they seem to come from Hi), and Imprezas 2.5is.
All are automatic.

Of course it's possible to find a used higher end 1-2 year old car that was a trade-in, but more likely the nicer ones are Subaru demos, ie driven by a Subaru employee, a manager.

Having said that from time to time an ex-rental Outback sedan shows up... so I guess it just depends on what the rental company bought or was offered.

Perhaps we'll start to see Outback XTs as they become better known and people are willing to rent them (pay a premium)?

My first post: Ahem....

Sort of a related story, which is why I'm putting it here.

When flying from Oahu to B.I., back in 2004, we didn't bother to prerent a vehicle to drive from Kona to Hilo. As it turned out, it being the weekend before Ironman, that was a mistake. We managed to get Chrysler 300 at something like $300/day, and was happy for it. We weren't about to make the same mistake before flying to Maui so I called ahead. They asked what size car I wanted - small/midsize - and offered either a Malibu  or a Focus   . I opted for the Malibu. When we got there, what did they roll out, but an Impreza 2.5! Yesss!

We got to run the road to Hana, and Haleakala in the best possible car.

Unfortunately, I don't remember what the company name was.
